With record heat starting to flirt with the stats on a regular basis ;-) spring, which had begun to spring, has leaped out in full bloom

these were tiny little sprouts along a corner of the backyard and have now officially taken over!

which is fine with us, we like them

happy spring everyone!

typically, when i post about a new header, i also post the original image

this time, because i plan to use the full image in a photopoem, i’ll skip that til then

also, yes ;-) i did have another header recently, that i didn’t do a header post on, my happy new year from austin 2013 header, but it was a quick momentary upload just to have something for new years and arriving in austin

close to where we’re staying in austin, near the area of barton springs rd and south first, tons of birds hang out, on the wires, around the temporary food courts serviced by food trucks (something austin has done really well developing i think), and of course in trees

this shot is almost on riverside drive, between the long center for the performing arts, and lady bird (town) lake

but one can spot these critters flitting around almost everywhere people hand out and might drop food ;-)

we’re still very much struggling, recovering from i guess, a very bad bug strain that our tired systems coping with the onslaught of forgotten allergies finally succumbed to -

so stay healthy everyone,  i wish us all the best!

Quai at Notre Dame

the quais in paris have a storied past, and much like the seawall in galveston or the riverwalk in san antonio, they provide close access to the water in a relatively safe and potentially enjoyable manner

it’s hard to see real well, but the small bridge crossing the water to notre dame is packed with people – good thing we’re here in the off-season ;-)

*

850th Anniversary of Notre Dame, December 12, 2012

we just found out, venturing around the ancient cathedral, that on dec 12th, there’ll be a celebration of the church’s birthday so to speak

i’m assuming the 850 years is from a specific point of finish, as it seems i’ve read construction went on for over two hundred years

either way ;-) this looks like a great event

oh, and dec 12th is the start date of the celebration, which continues into dec of 2013 – now that’s a party ;-)

*

Comme Chai Toi

i want to add that my wife and i had a fabulous meal at a new restaurant, chomme chai toi, right across from the side of notre dame, with an incredible view

with food to match in terms of quality

we met the owner, who’s a chef, and feel this is a place we can recommend based on our visit there ;-)

*

Cropping, and Other Image Editing Choices

visually, choosing where to crop from the full size image, to create my header, was an extra challenge

I moved my crop box up and down several times, checking the feel of the image, and finally opted for just a hair above the three arches

also, my original angle has the bridge slanting down to the right too much, so i rotated the image a hair

finally, seeing that the global exposure adjustments didn’t quite work for me, i used a large brush size for the dodge tool, then retracted spots that got washed out too much via the history tool

some of the fall color remnants were given justice under the cloud cover, so the dodge tool helped bring some of that color out

all in all, i like it ;-)

whether i’ll do another header for paris before we leave mid dec, i don’t know yet, we’ll see ;-)

One More Vermont Header Image

my wife and i thought we would be gone from vermont at this time, but our departure delay due to hurricane sandy has us staying in my wife’s beautiful home state just a little longer

vermont, unlike stretches and areas of my home state, texas, seems to have few areas one couldn’t say was beautiful, or at least nice to look at

the state is like one giant postcard ;-)

even in the dreariest of times, this remains so; whether it’s because this is new to me, or is more generally so for most anyone, this is another great example -

my previous header image, of the peak of fall foliage up near stowe at smuggler’s notch, was an easy one, though involving fantastic luck getting to that image’s spot at the right moment before it was gone

this image, in mid autumn here, also very near stowe, at one of the trapp family lodge’s dining spots, is of the lull between the colors of fall and the snows of winter – yet, for me, still a beauty

*

The Cropping Challenge

in this instance, my task was choosing between a higher or lower horizontal line in my cropping

one click higher, and my focus swept away from the trees and old wood structure to the mountains -

one click lower, and i felt a great sweep up the land to the tree line, but lost the sense of power from the mountains in the background -

so this header is a compromise i’m satisfied with: clarity of the trees and farmhouse cafe, and enough visibility of the mountains to see the fog-cloud rolling over some of the tops

*

The Exposure Setting Challenge

then, adjusting the exposure setting of the foreground (grass, trees, and building) while differently adjusting what i wanted to show in the sky and mountain slopes, took some experimentation with photoshop’s exposure tool, including the brush tool set to a history setting -

all in all, a fun creative project ;-)

*

Prayers for Those Suffering Because of Hurricane Sandy

finally, as i enjoyed my creative work in a temporary and quite comfortable setting, i know from past experience the suffering many are feeling trying to manage to get through the increasingly cold wet weather, often without power and other needs – our prayers to all

and for those who have lost loved ones, which i have not had yet to experience from a storm, my deepest possible prayers

best wishes to all….

last year, this time of year, despite most the folk here saying it was a poor autumn fall color season, i saw more fall foliage than all my years before

this year put last year to, i’m glad to say, to shame ;-)

of weeks of highs in the 60s and 50s, this was the one 70s day in a long while, and we were fortunate to have the time and means to travel about an hour east of burlington vermont, up toward smuggler’s notch, and get these views and this shot

these last few weeks of summer here in northern vermont, the moments one can sense the shift of seasons is happening a bit later than last summer -

so though i only have two vermont summers to compare, at least i’m not just imagining ;-)

what i do imagine, is what those weather winks, nature’s foreshadowing, is bringing -

leaves in quantities of red and yellows you’d think nature was an artist who favored monochromes, with winter whites, so the native vermonters say, now not far behind

but whether it’s because my birthday’s nearing now (in oct), or what the weatherman here says has been an unusually hot summer, or my love of autumn colors (rare treat for a gulf coast texas boy) – that lighthouse blink is warning me, no welcoming me, back into my favored harbor of the year ;-)

happy last of summer first of coming fall folks!

except for the rarest of springs in texas, where the mild winter jumped to summer ;-) this is the longest spring season i’ve ever experienced -

thus so many spring headers i’ve used this year ;-)

this is a relatively recently rejuvenated area nearby in the neighboring town of winooski

the name winooski comes from the indian tribe abenaki, original to this area, and means onion, which evidently grows in abundance along the river

i particularly like this ’cause i was very surprised, back in austin, to see how beautiful an onion plant can actually be

and spring is only about half way through to summer, on the calendar, and, evidently, here in vermont too ;-)

Header Art # 8 – Spring Header 2012

maybe it’s because being in northern vermont for a spring season is so new to me, with its contrasts to a texas spring ;-) but the play of days in the high 80s with those peaking in the low 40s, and lots of days in-between ;-) has me wanting to post more frequently changing headers for my site

less than a month ago, when spring has just begun, i posted my first spring header

now, i’m already updating it with a variation of the lighthouse image in it

though i was very tempted to go straight to a beautifully sun-filled floral, which yesterday and today would have been accurate, by this weekend, we leave the mid 70s and return to heavy clouds and much cooler highs in the 40s

so i’ll respect the pace of the transition from winter to full spring in this much more northern state than i’ve ever lived in before, with this new image, of seagulls beginning to brave the break in mist and clouds and enjoy their fishing and foraging in milder weather ;-)

the original image, below, is one i really like, but it’s easy to see where the forced selecting for the header size, creates its own unique variation; then of course i play with saturation, dodge, etc

*

Diving Bird Header Original

*

i’ve enjoyed this image so much, i even cropped the diving bird near-center, below the horizon, in a photo-poem i recently posted, “Diving

Winter

being yesterday was the first full day of winter, thought it was probably time for me to replace my fall foliage leaves image

this is an image of my first snow fall here in burlington, vermont -

i got lucky ;-)

***

Red Berries with Snow

*

Original Image

the original is quite a picture, used it for my post, “First Snow – Original Inspirational & Places Poetry & Video

i guess i should qualify “quite a picture” as quite a picture for me ;-) since i haven’t since much snow in my life time ;-)

but i do really like the contrasts and patterns

*

Text Tool in Photoshop

besides the obvious cropping, and a very tiny bit of lighting adjustment, the major thing i did was play with the “yoga-adan” text on the image

once i’d chosen the font size, placement, and color, playing with the text adjustment options was kinda fun

clicking on the shadow box effect brings up all kinds of adjustment options, lengthening the shadow, the shadow color (which decided i liked red rather than black), and the type of color overlay

from there, other adjustments included textures and gradients and such, none of which i used

i did experiment with the stroke option, liked the inside stroke effect, but eventually opted for adding a bit of the outer glow effect, with a reduced opacity

*

Border

a reduced fill on the color intensity brought the right glow-ish pink i liked to the border

*

i hope ya’ll enjoy the current winter header, and time will tell if it’ll hold all winter, or other enticing images prod me to do another ;-)

happy holidays everyone!

summer starts today, so changing my blog header is no big surprise – usually the expectation of what the new image is, is about all the drama there is ;-)

this time though, i am in a new state, away from texas, since i was in the air force stationed in northwest florida – and vermont is definitely different in terrain and temperatures from what i was used to around austin and galveston

typically, i would have chosen a beach or sea splashed image, maybe one including galveston’s vital seawall -

but the air temperature is cooler here, much cooler!

and i mention air temp ’cause back in texas, my part of texas, actually most of texas ;-) the dew point alone adds nuances that can’t be ignored!

so here, in vermont, my (new) part of vermont, in burlington, right up the hill from lake champlain, a water view also exists, but differently ;-)

*

the first difference, flat to hilly, is significant, in feel and look

experiencing variable height and undulation in the land, is very different from flat expanse

both are good, but can lead to a sense of unity and oneness with the land, and thus one’s interior landscape, but with nuances that go beyond the obviousness of hilly vs flat, and seem to sometimes only be felt in moments, as if from the corner of the soul’s eye

*

the second difference is in vegetation

galveston’s seawall, except for the planted palm tree, is bare of obstruction for a view to the horizon; while burlington’s battery park of mature trees, speckle-peeks through plush foliage to the horizon beyond

neither experience should be missed ;-)

*

and though rarely thought to be of significance, the third difference, the air temperature and wind speed and dew points, the combined sense of the atmosphere, is vital

thus, for example, while galveston’s seaside seawall sense is flat, the wind is often, well ;-) a wind, not a breeze! it rouses thoughts and memories of nature’s warm relentless salty energy set in a flatness barely creased by surface waves -

burlington’s battery park promenade promises immersion in air heavy with granules of caressing fresh water droplets filling the crevices of soft hills and large leafy trees and a land and soul ripe for a respite from winter -

*

ah yes, it’s a blessing to know both feelings of vitality…

below are images representing both areas of experience, galveston and burlington

the new blog header for summer, is of course a crop from the full image in battery park below

i used an image similar to this one of sheila for two posts recently, one on the use of visualization, in this case, during an arm-heart-opening sequence -

the other in a post on the process, my playing of the creative edge, of the photography for this post (that post appears two days after this post on the new summer header), “playing my edge with photography, telling a story in pictures (adjustments)”

*

Battery Park View with Lake, Beginning of Summer

such a different image, though one can grasp the sameness, just nuanced differently, that this is nature, this is us, this is the same draw to the open skies and horizon hugging water

love the young couple meandering their way to the edge too ;-)

***

Final Thoughts

choosing, or deciding, which shoreline vista is better is, for me, silly -

clearly i am thrilled to have this new experience available to me here in vermont, and just as clear, is my love and appreciation for the ocean seen from galveston  [1]

like the seasons themselves, as has been said, “to everything there is a season…”  [2]

this season, summer, i present a sliver of lake champlain, through the trees -

may i find the same joy of choice in my daily yoga poses and routines…

[1]  i’ve heard plenty ’bout how the water surrounding galveston is a gulf, the gulf of mexico; but for me, it’s also, still the ocean ;-)

a google search comes up with a couple of strong dissenters, but most, like wikipedia, consider the gulf of mexico as actually part of the atlantic ocean!

it’s almost like finding out one’s favorite pose efforts is not just a favored way to stretch or strengthen, but actually a modification of a well known named posture ;-)

below is the full image for this spring’s header on the blog

with my first header, from a painting of a rare snow day on valentine’s day in austin, though it came out well, and i grew to appreciate it, i initially felt badly, cropping the image to fit the header size -

but with this photo, i like both, the cropping worked really well

the image itself, is from the mid 2000′s, pretty close to the time of the valentine snow day mentioned above – that’s the weather in austin ;-)

i’d planted the pear trees the fall of 2000, and they must’ve like the crazy summer heat and bouts of 20 degree winter freezes, cause they never failed to bloom like this in the spring -

beautiful clusters of tiny white flowers set among the still-soft early spring leaves

the bark had thickened quickly over the few years to this picture

and the scent was faint firm soft and lingered

*

i got many great pictures of these leaves and trees, in the spring and in the fall, and have used their gracious images in several posts already

another spring leaf example is on “asanas (poses) – do i HAVE to do the pose this way? part 1, no…”

good fall leaf color example is on “teaching my first yoga class”

*

and i loved pruning the crossing branches, and covering the ground with fresh mulch each year

it was a process…

*

that’s how yoga is -

all fitness really – dance, zumba, jogging, resistance work…

and i really feel there’s a need to remind or let others know the truth of this, this inter-connectedness of what we people do, what we like doing, with movement and breathing and feeling fit -

but it seems, for me, there’s more process available for me, with yoga

i don’t think it’s more special than other activities, per se, just fits me more so

so there’s more process to, well, process ;-)

*

yoga reminds me of me, needing my leaves and twigs and branches each needing twining and pruning and careful daily guiding so each leaf, each leaf that’s part of the tree, gets to get some light….

below is the full image the current header is cropped from

the image header, for now, will change by whim and season ;-)

this image, Valentines Day Austin Tx 2004 was the last prev snow/ice event in austin

didn’t last long, though the memory has ;-)  i remember the unusually complete silence and quiet (related differing sensations i think)

there was, i realize now, a meditative quality i sensed, but did not name – i think this is true of most all of us, we experience and know what meditation is, but don’t realize it as such, it’s simplicity and naturalness

little by little, slowly slowly, among all the many things that interest me, i’ll go back to this topic now and then; discovering my own moments of quiet meditation i can claim back…with new realizations….
