dVersePoets OpenLinkNight, # 95, Hosted by Tony Maude

I’ve linked my new poem to a great poets site, dVersePoets.

*

One of my smaller poems, yet chock full of meaning for me.

In the linked to poem below, “Little Dancer,” I think I was touching on the same meaning, but hadn’t realized it when I wrote it, nearly two decades ago.

Then, almost two years ago, I posted it on this site, with commentary that I was beginning to see more in the poem than when I wrote it.

It is often said we learn from our creative efforts, as much if not more, than those who welcome our work.  I don’t know how true that is, but in regards to myself, my own benefitting, it is very much true.

I hope you’ll take a look at this very sweet short poem below also, and see if you feel some of the same things I began to notice them, and try to imply in the short lines for “Love is Blind(ing).”

Thanks so much ;-)

Fitness, a Path with a View
Adan, Top of Mount Philo Vermont, Summer 2011

Above image was taken by Sheila almost two years ago, and we had just moved from Texas to Vermont, her home state.

In the background is an approaching storm which, because she’d grown up and gone to college there in Burlington, along the Champlain Valley, she knew we had a small window to drive back down that small mountain.

We were just about back to ground level when the storm hit.  Thank goodness, ’cause that winding road down was tricky enough for a coastal / central Texas boy like me. ;-)

And with the heat just beginning to get cranked up here around Austin, the memory of that Vermont weather sure seems awfully nice!

But one thing Austin Texas and Burlington Vermont have very much in common is, having a large portion of the population interested in and pursuing fitness!

There is a photopoem series I started featuring images in Vermont, and though I haven’t done one of Vermont in awhile, it’ll come around again.  Right now, being in Austin, and having recently returned from our stay in Paris, those photo series will have priority.  For now. ;-)

*

Happy National Physical Fitness and Sports Month everyone. ;-)

As detailed in many of my posts, and most recently in my three part series detailing becoming ill and getting back to health, it is difficult indeed to do the things one enjoys if not at least somewhat healthy.

That series summarizes and links to many of my own and others’ articles on things like muscle memory, beginning slowly, listening to one’s self, yoga, Stronger Seniors and SilverSneakers sites, among many others.

The Day I Wed My Kids’ Step-Mom

Down the seawall in Galveston

down Broadway Boulevard’s hundred year old oaks

before Ike torn them down -

down to the courthouse

with our three kids

- in tow -

two

were mine and your little one.

But they were all, so little, then, weren’t they…

even

if

with their own children now.

And we heard “Going to the

Chapel”

playing in our Chevy Chevette

grins spreading stars ‘cross our eyes as we sang it.

The soft Galveston air

warm

but not yet hot.

The parking was easy then too.

And we’d jumped into doing it, it seemed -

marrying, even

if nearly a year and a half after we’d first pretended not to

have noticed each other.

Well

there’s no denying it now.

I married you then, and I’d marry you now.

And maybe remember, again, it wasn’t just the words in the song -

it was the music in the car and our children in the back seat

and the wind in the windows and all the wishes

we’ve worked to make true.

Happy Anniversary

Sheila

dVersePoets OpenLinkNight, # 94, Hosted by Grace

I’ve linked my new poem to a great site for poets, dVersePoets.

OpenLinkNight provides an open prompt once a week for poets to post on any subject.  A few suggestions, with an example in their posting, are spring, or a poem for National Poetry Month (April).

For spring, I do have an springtime Austin Texas photopoem with images of the Hike & Bike Trail.

But this poem, if you’ve had a chance to read it, is an anniversary poem to my wife, Sheila. ;-)

*

May 1st – Happy 32nd Anniversary to Sheila ;-)

Below are some nice memories of past posts where I could feature you, or you inspired me.

Muchas gracias, it’s been a journey that’s filled (over-flowed? ;-) ) my life.

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Along the Austin Hike & Bike Trail, Mid Morning, Mid Spring

*

Necessity is the Mother of Invention, is a phrase I have frequently heard.

And needing to do some full time temp work, I’ve struggled with ways to remain creative beyond my more time-intensive work on my Paris Photo Series, my dVersePoets linked poems, and work on my fiction work (mostly novels with a few short stories) -

And as a result, today on Earth Day, I have come up with an idea that seems will be very satisfying for me to do: create short captioned photo posts that are timely and can be squeezed in time-wise.

I have to give a hat tip to Paul Sutherland’s site, GYA today, for inspiration.  It’s one of my favorite gratitude and inspirational sites, and I can only hope to touch its usefulness with these short posts.

My plan is the posts will always feature my own work, and they will be sporadic.  Maybe a run of a few, then none for a bit.  I have so much creative work I already want to do, I’m realistically just looking for a pragmatic way to continue posting when time is squnched, whether from working outside my main interests, or embroiled in a creative project with a tight time frame.

For Earth Day, the link above is to the Earth Day org site, and to an article on the history of the movement.  The opening sentence reads:

“Each year, Earth Day — April 22 — marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.”

Finally, go see this cartoon a long time yogi friend of mine, the Flying Yogini, posted on her facebook page.  It’s really cute. ;-)

Happy Earth Day everyone, at least we celebrate it to remind us. ;-)

Spring Time Along the Lake

We walked down the slope to the Hike & Bike.

Another weekend, another concert along

the shore before the heat arrives.

People outnumber the cars

but the cars can’t

move.

It’s a good time

to be walking, rowing

sitting on benches by the shoreline.

There’s only small windows of

time

to see the better side

of Austin

but

the view is mighty

fine

when the glass

has just been cleaned.

I hesitated uploading this last image because of someone’s thoughtlessness of letting that bag of trash blow over onto an otherwise beautiful series of images along Austin’s Lady Bird Lake and Hike & Bike area.

It pitiful that people allow themselves to be so uncaring, and yet, thank goodness, it was the only instance of litter among all the clean-landscape images I took this afternoon.

At least that stood out. ;-)

There’s a lot of crummy people out there, but there’s a lot more that aren’t…

Birds in the Bath

Winter rains

Spring rains

Rains in Paris and in Austin

The same rains wet with earth made

to moisture.

The birds don’t care.

The water is the same, all good to them.

It doesn’t matter the season or the place.

And the people passing smiling by them

in Paris and in Austin

are like them.

They don’t care either.

The birds are all the same, all good to them.

Rinsing off the muddy differences

mad men try to make

on our Earth.

Birds in Austin by Palmer Auditorium

Birds in Austin by Palmer Auditorium

Image

I very recently, in my Paris Photo series, posted some images of birds bathing in a puddle by the Eiffel Tower, and kept thinking and feeling the similarity to birds just about everywhere I’ve been blessed to go on this Earth.

And though not that many places, enough to feel that particular connection.

Then I remembered I had taken some pictures of birds bathing just a few weeks earlier here in Austin, and couldn’t resist posting a poem for it, and showing the photos.

This was taken just a walk down from our apartment, in a green area between Palmer Events Center and Lady Bird Lake.  Palmer is a reconstructed use of an old auditorium where Sheila and I did almost all our Austin art and craft shows when we were personalizing and selling our poetry to the public back in the 90s.

If you get a chance take a look at the Paris birds bathing by the Eiffel Tower.

If Mom’s Were…

If moms were rainbows

you would always be the

first and last colors shining.

If moms were angels

you’d be my highest guardian.

If moms were roses

you’d open cheerfully at daybreak

and guide me from the thorns of life.

If moms were dreams

you’d be my deepest sleep.

If moms were stars

you’d be my guiding light.

And if moms were money

you’d never be spent foolishly

but forever saved wisely in my heart.

dVersePoets OpenLinkNight, Mother’s Day, and “If Mom’s Were…”

dVersePoets

one of the advantages of posting to dVersePoets OpenLinkNight, and participating in their open call prompt for poetry, is being able to merge something i want to post, with a poem i need to post, and be part of the camaraderie with a great group of original and “very” diverse yet talented poets -

do check out their link below ;-) joseph hesch, tonight’s host, has some witty description of tending the poetry bar ;-) and ties it to one of his favorite emily dickinson poems

*

Mother’s Day

the biggest celebration after Christmas is fast approaching, and i’ve a few poems i’ve posted over the years i wanted to add to

recently i posted a new poem, “aging gracefully into mother’s day“, which is part of my family poems in general on my site (includes dad, babies, all those good relationships we’ve hopefully be able to enjoy)

the family poems series does include quite a few other mother’s day poems, including poems like “step mom” and “my mom is an angel

*

“If Mom’s Were…”

written almost twenty years ago now, amazing!

this is one of my older favorite family poems, where i created a self prompt, before i knew there was such a thing as “a” prompt ;-)

i did many many poems in this style, saying what an idea or person “was” if they were something else

my wife sheila and i sold these little poems in art and mall shows all through the 90s, personalizing them on the spot, printing them out, and matting and backing them with mats and foam core i cut myself at home

all i asked of myself was to find an image that felt right to me emotionally, and see if i could phrase it in a nice way

i think that is part of what i like about dVersePoets, especially their open link night feature which circles round each week, a poet or artist can create what is dearest to his or her heart right then, in the style that suits, in the words that mean the most

mother’s day is just a month away now, and though it really exists all year round ;-) watching and celebrating its approach might mean a little more, especially to the mom ;-)

best wishes everyone!

Aging Gracefully into Mother’s Day

Seems each year
My remembrance of
My memory of the coming
Of the next Mother’s Day
is
Just a little sooner than before.

Like
The second roller coaster turn
and dip
Just beyond the next rise.

I take the reminder
A bit more mindfully
now

Which lets the few grey hair I have
left
Lay a little less wind-blown
As I lay awake through another
day
Listening to the turning of the wheels
On the steely tracks grind toward
The next big moment

I’m close enough for the ride to end
To begin to know what she, my Mom
must feel
Waiting seeing hearing the wheels whirrrr
the final loops.

Formatting & Subject Matter

it’s funny sometimes how what’s available determines what one does

i wanted to create a mother’s day poem, feeling the urge, partly i think because i’m seeing all kinds of mother’s day articles all a sudden, seeing a surge in interest in my past mother’s day poems on my site, and going to see my own mom hopefully this coming weekend

and, i was using an app that wouldn’t let me center align, and insisted on capital letters at the beginning of each line unless i manually removed them (which i did for a few lines to enhance the tonal meaning i wanted)

and i end up with the above

its own thing ;-)

**

More Mother’s Day Poems

with our youngest girl now a new mom, an older mom poem i’d like to post, and something for my wife too, there should be a few more mother’s day offering in the near future ;-)

**

Link

linked to dVersePoets OpenLinkNight, # 87

hosted by : claudia

she talks about her most recent travel, this time to berlin, and the feeling of seeing a once divided city together, and all the things she finds being able to freely visit there

she says:

“By the end of the day, I didn’t feel my feet anymore but every single pore in me screamed happiness. And why?

Because I saw beyond my own borders, my view got stretched and I experienced things I never experienced before…”

my own new series where i go back to my recent extended stay in paris fits into this

and my poem above, “aging gracefully into mother’s day,” within travels of another kind, to a holiday, this time mother’s day, brings out some of those same new “things i never experienced before…”

for my mom & i , it’s the connecting of the experience of aging more fully, and hopefully more gracefully, into our years ;-)

“Distant Goals”

i spied the tiny bird high atop a twig branch pregnant with april buds in february

second hand

my wife had to finger-point it to me several times

before I differentiated it from the same-brown colors of left-over leaves from fall

though, i need to add, i could hear its insistent chirp-call, like a favorite song on a jukebox

played too loud

for the speakers, or listeners

i guess, seeing the plump brown buds all around itself, it too, like me, sensed that spring and leaves, and other birds, would soon be thick among fresh light green leaves with textures so fragile a wind might tear them

at least now i know why I sometimes sound like the speakers inside my head are

also

too loud

the once distant goal of a new spring in my life

is very near

Getting Back to Healthy – Yes, It’s a Process ;-)

speaking of work in progress, last posting, i said this below :

going from teaching 2 to 5 fitness classes per week, through to the end of oct last year, then traveling to stowe, paris, houston, and back here in austin, even with doing daily walks, and intermittent chair based exercise sets, plus getting sick! has left sheila and myself at a point where, resuming a more daily chair based routine, and including weights, elastic bands, etc, has been a reminder how much the body needs to be worked to stay in fluid enjoyable order ;-)

my next post, barring the usual unknowns, is to do a fitness review -

as much for sheila and myself as anyone interested ;-)

stay healthy and happy everyone!

adan

well, i haven’t given up, and am taking my time with it, as it is an important post for, with pics showing how i had deteriorated due to illness and lack of physical activity i had been used to for, well, decades

the good news, as i have said in classes for ages, ie, the few years i’ve taught classes ;-) , the path back to fitness, once one has regained or stayed fit, is much much quicker than the initial work

memory, both body and mental memory play huge parts in that, but i think, when those body and mental memories are keyed, the emotional memories of being more fit, doing movement that is enjoyable and healthy, is even more powerful

so, hopefully, again, soon ;-) i’ll have my new fitness post, my first in a very long time

this time with the extra layer of experience of falling out of fitness, ever so slowly , over several months, and (beginning) to come back

stay well everyone, take care!

oh, though i’m not ready yet (time constraints and other commitments) i’ll do a post relatively soon on my site’s url name change to my full name

all links from yoga-adan will still work (or should!)

so more on this in time also ;-)

“A New Winter in an Old Winter Haunt”

the black raven-winged bird, still plump

from the past seasons’ fullness

nipped at the winter twigs

remembering

knobs and nubs and where

a favored berry

once grew

*

the other birds nearby, not nearly

as plump, not nearly as

knowing

of where treasures of thrown trash -

barely eaten burgers, a few

fries

were hidden, but easily found

nipped at every change of light on each branch

*

the old bird chuckled and cawed quietly

if they ask, he thought, i’ll tell them

if not, they’ll find their own

that’s what he did

though he

nearly starved that one winter

until the walking creatures opened a new

taco stand nearby -

yes, he thought, nature provides….

Getting Back to Healthy – Yes, It’s a Process ;-)

going from teaching 2 to 5 fitness classes per week, through to the end of oct last year, then traveling to stowe, paris, houston, and back here in austin, even with doing daily walks, and intermittent chair based exercise sets, plus getting sick! has left sheila and myself at a point where, resuming a more daily chair based routine, and including weights, elastic bands, etc, has been a reminder how much the body needs to be worked to stay in fluid enjoyable order ;-)

my next post, barring the usual unknowns, is to do a fitness review -

as much for sheila and myself as anyone interested ;-)

stay healthy and happy everyone!

“My Poetry”

poetry, my poetry
is a string of clear crystals
strung together with flossing lines
picking out bits of unaware-of-nesses
as the sparkling glass is slowly
dragged
across the stones of ancient
streets now seldom swept
and missing, ever so
missing
being broken

“Finding the New in the Old Homestead”

we left texas two years ago, the

flat coastal plain around galveston

the rough and rolly hills and

byways in austin -

ventured

out

onto the mountains and snows of

vermont

then left there also

to the

wonders of paris -

what could we possibly find new in austin texas?

that is our challenge, and we gladly

accept it ;-)

bridge walks reminding us of tiny

cobblestone streets in paris

and tucked away paths

in the woods

of vermont

friends, old and young

2000 and 8000 miles away

so much like friends

now

2 and 8 blocks

away

the differences and connections

more than the newest

place to eat

are bringing us our new year

Austin, We’ve Back!

a quick post to say we’re back in the U.S.A.!

still waiting to move into a set place, have our vermont things sent to us, and hopefully next week have our internet etc set up

i picked this image cause it reminded me of my paris post about small streets, big treats -

this is the pedestrian walk that runs along an extremely busy river crossing bridge in austin (among many), the First Street Bridge -

and this is about an hour and a half before the new year’s fireworks

we went back to our room shortly after this shot and watched the display from our room at an extended stay, but we got a nice first-night-out walk, and re-acquaintance with austin

hopefully, my mid jan, i’ll be up and running, have our furniture and things, and begin to settle down

best wishes ya’ll ;-)

and the best of new years!

dVerse Poets Meeting the Bar Prompt : Exploring Second Person

hosted by : Victoria C. Slotto

i saw the prompt was for second person usage at dverse and thought, no idea what to do for that, then had this idea, hey, talking to oneself is a sort-of second person, so why not try that ;-)

additionally, i wanted to use these three images of my wife sheila and claudia, who had come to paris on business for the day -

fortunately she had a couple hours we were able to meet with her with, and these are from a nearby church, just across from notre dame, st severin (i’ve placed a link below)

hand-holding a small compact and shooting without flash (restricted inside most churches & museums) is tricky enough for me, which i often somewhat solve using a two-second timer release, but -

this created blur motion of the two of them walking and chatting quietly in the chapel

turned out perfect ;-) and inspired the idea of motion in stillness

special thanks to victoria, hosting dverse, for the unexpectedly timely prompt ;-)

Next PhotoPoem Series, Austin Texas

two challenges for photopoems for austin :

1) i’ve lived there on and off for decades, so what’s new to shoot that “i” like?

2) we’ll be there at least a year (barring the unknown), so selectiveness and intermittent-ness will have to be major guiding key words ;-)

both challenges are something i’ll, eventually if not immediately, find interesting ;-)

*

Site on Vacation December 15 (Paris) – Mid January 2012 (Austin)

taking a cue from the french tradition of, not only taking a month off during august, but doing so because it best fits their life styles ;-) my site and i are taking a vacation from blogging to finish our move from texas to vermont to paris to texas ;-)

i will return, barring the unknown or need to either come back sooner or later, about mid january, from the self-proclaimed music capital of the world, austin texas

*

Special Holding Page

i’ll post a special page featuring several box sets of my work as a holder page til i return

plus all current articles links images and poems will remain available as usual

so, see you on my holding page soon, and see you in mid jan a little later

take care all, happy holidays!

on a rainy dreary day, we found a note of sunshine, a place noted in our “lonely planet” book guide that’s provided us with much guidance and ideas :

the location where britain signed the treaty of paris recognizing american independence

all kinds of famous guys like benjamin franklin et al were there ;-) and i’ve provided a few suggested links below for more info on the treaty and war for independence

it was worth the trip ;-)

the hotel next door, the guide book also told us, is where hemingway first stayed  in paris

Neat Place to Eat Near Luxembourg Gardens

Machu Picchu

on one of our trips (several already) to luxembourg gardens (down the street via st michel) we wanted to try a peruvian restaurant recommended by the folk of lonely planet, with a book of the same name – tania our youngest had suggested the book, and had had a great trip to peru some time back, so that seemed like enough reasons to google the tiny street it’s on and give it a try -

below, because i couldn’t find a website for it, is a google search of reviews etc for it

very interesting place, great food, good prices, well worth it

http://tinyurl.com/dyqtbuf

as most places we’ve been to at lunch, we’re the first ones there, and soon after, packed!

paris is definitely a late lunch (vs u.s. lunches) place ;-)

Final Thoughts

i’ve had the good fortune to have grown up around some great parks, moved and lived by other great parks, and the luxembourg gardens in paris adds another great place of nature people have been able to keep fresh and useable, both for other people, and fellow winged and furry creatures we live with ;-)

and like so many of the great areas i’ve been close to, whether galveston’s seawall, herman or memorial parks in houston, lady bird (town lake) and barton springs in austin, or the waterfront and leddy park in burlington vt, luxembourg gardens appears worth experiencing in all its state year round

having parks like these around us growing up and now, is like a communal prayer with the world around us, that things will work out for our little planet

best wishes,

dVersePoets

Prompt for OpenLinkNight # 72

hosted by claudia, with an interesting essay on travel, in the physical world, and the worlds of fantasy and poetics

“I’m thankful for every single poet who shows up here tonight and shares a bit of their journey, allows us a glimpse into their life and gives us the opportunity to travel a few miles into unknown territory and the magical world of verse.”

reading of claudia’s travels via her poems, and recently giving my wife’s and mine’s stay in paris a shot at some travel inspiration, i’d say this promises to be a prompt worth seeing what the contributing poets come up with ;-)

*

Orangerie

Intro

visiting the musee de l’orangerie this time around (our first trip was over 11 years ago) was a special priority for us this time around, as last time we were here in the early 2000′s, the building was under renovation

one of my favorite spots to have visited last time, was the tuileries, so realizing we could make a short-daylight afternoon of the gardens, and then visit the place where monet’s huge late-life waterlilies were housed, was a real treat

no photos are allowed of the waterlilies canvases  but we were able to take a couple of pics of two wonderful impressionist images, one from renoir, and one from monet

Tips

1)

if you want discounted tickets to both the d’Orsay and the l’Orangerie, assuming you haven’t already decided to get the monster all-museum pass to most of the paris museums (which we got the first time and was well worth it), then you can get a good discount purchasing for just these two museums, which are (sorta) across the seine river from each other

the young intern with an eager approach to practicing his growing use of english, at the visitors center at the pyramides location, suggested, since we’d have to wait in the regular line to get our combo ticket (once one has a ticket, the other museum has a reservation line, ie, already purchased a ticket-line, that lets you zoom in), it would be easier to go to the l’orangerie first, which has much smaller (though active) lines than the d’orsay (which is HUGE) ;-)

it was an extremely valuable suggestion we’re grateful for

*

2)

also, if you go to the l’orangerie, before or after, to the southeast of the place de condorde, where the big spiky monument is, is a view of the eiffel tower

as you walk to the corner of the bridge over the seine, the view of the eiffel tower gets better and better, and if you cross to the east side of the bridge, the view is really grand

we still haven’t seen it at night, but i think that’s coming soon, i hope ;-)

***

Final Word

and finally, i wanted to say, that though my first trip with sheila here to paris, was more than anything, to see the great paintings, esp the impressionist art, the inner city as a whole, set within the original ancient city walls circling the arrondissements, is a work of beauty all its own -

the way the trees are cut and placed, the angles of facades, the variety of both broad and narrow streets, the way people place so many flowers and even trees in planters in the windows, the cut of the clothes worn daily, it’s amazing what a culture that wants beauty around itself can do

thanks everyone ;-)

“The Woods Within Paris”

geniuses

like renior

monet degas manet

gathered memories

and fashioned manners of living

still breathing

today

*

today

families from block houses

condos apartments and suites

seek

blends of light in the beauty of palaces

too grand for only the

few -

palaces set with fountains

for birds and children playing among

the

flowers and trees gracing

paris’ soil

*

in the distance

the eiffel tower rises dimly

at day, brightly at night

while nearby

children and pets

run among fleeing

pigeons who know

they can return

as nature always returns

once the people finally rest

having allowed our nature to smile

among the rich woods rooted deep in our hearts

Final Thoughts

the tuileries here in paris, based on what’s i’ve read in the links above, and the feel of the gardens and expanse and contrast of massive buildings and open nature, is one of a thankfulness for what is possible, for peaceful co-existence

though it’s also obvious, from the history here, this is an on-going process

not without a price, and not without an effort

ironically though, that effort and price is of one toward peace, not continual conflict

which (peace) may be the biggest challenge of living within of all

after all, what’s the stereotypical funny family movie about thanksgiving usually about ;-)
