victoria has a wonderful poem from walt whitman, plus reminds us of the variety of poets that have written work honoring those who fight to preserve their homes and families :

“William Shakespeare, Wilfred Owens, Robinson Jeffers, Walt Whitman, Carl Sandburg, Matthew Arnold, Rudyard Kipling, Anne Sexton, William Blake and Randall Jarrell.”

and ends with this well said line :

“Go out and enjoy the day, whether you live in a country that celebrates Memorial Day or not.”

my poem is for the relationship between the soldier, any one of us, and the society we live within….

Soldiers Come in All Sizes

when

not that long ago

hordes rode the ridge

flashing steel

and death

the child

as much as the woman

with the man

scurried to defend

life

soldiers are defenders

of a way of life

and life

itself

to preserve the soldier

willing to give the only thing

we know for sure

our breath

our

way of life

itself

must defend the values of our soldiers

i thought about if i’d write a descriptive click-click-click-rush! of my first roller coaster ride, or even of my son, screaming on take off on his first roller coaster ride cause the name of it was The Great American Scream Machine – hey, it was the name of ride, so do it!

but other than throwing up after being spun like a texas tornado on a child’s saucer cup ride, my first ride into a haunted house track-ride, wryly called the Fun House, has to be the one i remember most

join claudia over at dVersePoets if you can; she says,

“Take us on a bumper car ride with you or on a metaphorical merry-go-round or tell us about that roller coaster ride that almost made you lose your mind…make it funny, thoughtful, wild, reflective… wide open space….”

memory rides can be kind of surprising what they dredge up in me

Fun in the Fun House

I remember screaming as my cousin
Several years older
Held me close, her hand easily covering my eyes.

I remember being embarrassed when our cart
Did it’s exit, but not enough to care.

A skeleton and a gnarled face on a glow stick
Had taken turns screeching at us from
The muggy dark.

Yes, she had laughed at the spooky turns
Inside the fun house
But it wasn’t til years later
At family gatherings
Everyone grinning
I agreed
Yes
It’d been fun.

Sometimes, evidently,
Fun is found
only
in the House of Time.
