Little River Along Mountain Road in Stowe Area © Felipe Adan Lerma

in the almost year and a half my wife and i have been in vermont, being able to visit and be near her family, where she was born and grew up, all the way to graduating from the university of vermont, we have wavered between leaving immediately ;-) , staying longer, and leaving as planned, around this time, but not sure exactly to where we would go next

in that time, our assumptions of what we’ve wanted / needed / should do, have also changed and fluxed, morphed and grown, tweaked and clarified

we finally settled on going back to texas, at least for the holidays, then finally doing a life long dream plan of staying in paris for a month or more, and enjoying that fantasy on at least on a more leisurely level

with news that our youngest girl was expecting her first child, we flipped those plans to going to paris first, then texas, ready to greet the newest grandchild

at this time, that plan seems to be holding ;-)

below, then, is an update on my texas to vermont series of posts, possibly my last one, with a wrap-up and expectations regarding fitness and the arts

***

On to Paris

Sheila Taking Tourists' Pictures in Paris, circa 2002

Sheila Taking Tourists’ Pictures in Paris, circa 2002

first, once we reach our new exit-from-vermont flight date, due to hurricane sandy, we’re off to paris as originally planned

i have to say though, our week-long delay here at the sun & ski inn has put us into what so far has been the best place to recover from the work we went through leaving our apartment (cleaning and packing etc, seems much tougher the older we get ;-) ) – the image above is the view from our sliding doors at the back of our unit

we’ve had secure for paris what promises to be a nice way to spend an extended time of about five weeks during the non-tourist season – more on that once we’re there

we’ll of course have pictures, and i’ll start a new photopoem series, much like the ones i have for vermont and the birds in galveston, something i look fwd to doing at least weekly

Back to Texas

Sheila by Hike & Bike Austin Texas '05

Sheila by Hike & Bike Austin Texas ’05

before the christmas holidays we’ll be headed back to texas for a year or more, or good, who knows ;-)

it’ll have been the longest i’ve been away from my home state, and three years since we’ve lived in austin (with our 1 1/2 year stay in galveston)

burlington, many people who live here have told me, is the miniature northern version of austin, with its culture, energy, music, good eats, hills, and nearby water -

flip the longish summers in austin with the equal length longish winters in burlington, grace away the over one and a half million population difference, and yes, i’d have to agree, incredibly and often, pleasantly true ;-)

Photo Poems

it appears i’ll mostly be posting photopoems for the near term -

they combine the visual and written arts, and for me are fun things to do

besides numerous stand-alone photopoems, many written for prompts from dVersePoets, I currently have two series, though the latter, the bird series, are really photos with captions – they were my pre-runner to my current photopoem format ;-)

the other set, the vermont photopoem series, is a more fully developed idea of what i like to do for now – it lets me present an image (which i have fun choosing and working up) and a short verse (that i enjoy tying to what the image compels from me)

once in paris, i fully hope to start a new thread, the paris photopoems series ;-)

*

i do want to mention that, besides prompts from dVersePoets, the first impetus to think of combining my own image and verse in its current form, came from a photopoem by jomul, who has an interesting site i’d recommend browsing

Adan + 40 Lbs with Sheila on Bike Path, Austin Texas ’05 :
Did I Mention I Didn’t Get Fit (again) Until 2008?

i’d often wondered how i could better motivate my fellow seniors in the classes sheila and i teach, that they too could improve from what ever fitness level they were at, if they wished -

i should have had and shown them this picture ;-) maybe still will

and this post certainly can ;-)

i even was wearing my 100 club exercise t-shirt!! it’s hilarious!

and more so ’cause the way to fitness is NOT just exercise (attentive movement), NOT just diet (sensible eating), but breathing, consistency, persistence, habit – did i mention i had a good partner? ;-) yeah, that too ;-)

but to my senior classes here in vermont, those through the The Y, both the early morning aerobics jazzing line-dancing ladies, but also the chair based gonna do it afternoon seniors – my deepest sincerest thank you !!!

sheila and i will see what we see once we’re back in texas, fitness class teaching wise, but we’ll always miss these great folks ;-)

“Weather Neighbors”

**

dVersePoets Pub – Stream of Consciousness Prompt -

hosted by Victoria C Slotto

*

stream of consciousness is one of my favorite modes of creativity, and has slowly, over the years, been tempered by some well needed conscious prodding reviewing and revising

so victorias’ suggestion, within her prompt at dVersePoets, is pretty valid, if you have the time and inclination, ie, you might get going and wanna bust through while the busting’s good ;-)

• Review your writing for any connection you can discover between words and phrases and see where your poem will take you.
• Put your work aside for a while before returning to it.

i find, if you do this form of writing enough, you get where you like incorporating and doing some of these ideas

and she has more tips, and examples, and links to the likes of james joyce and virginia woolf, among others

it’s an interesting read of a prompt, highly recommend if you’re curious ;-)

Weather Neighbors

a year ago i woke in texas to this same heat this

afternoon that had burned off a lingering morning northern

chill and find the two thousand miles neighbors each and every

inch along the way should i worry i wondered then forgot should i

fret or celebrate or buy an extra beer here or simply feel myself the

same in place to place adjust the windows with the shades as

the arc of sun boils the west and leaves the rest tonight

in tepid waiting for the cool of dawn i am neighbors

to myself in different lands offering strangers

notice of the dew point’s choke point on

our skin our eyes our way of feeling

something’s “off” something’s

not quite right tonight but

i am neighbors with

myself now and i

know

i know like the folk here

know

this winter past was faux cold and i know the

summer-spring that stings is faux heat

indeed

unless you get hot or cold

easy

then the hotty toddy tea and ice cold beer

beer beer cold beer here

might make us neighbors one more season’s passing

happy 31st anniversary sheila ;-)

**

below the following poem, is my post for our 30th anniversary last year, on this same date ;-)

sheila and i were one month away from leaving texas for vermont for a bit to be near her family, and to see her home state

we arrived around 5 pm, rented a car, and drove to our new apt, met our landlady for our keys and intros, and walked down the few blocks to church street where the summer’s first festival of jazz was well under way

by the time we were seated out doors under the umbrellas at ken’s pizzas, the cooling dry air felt a bit chilly to us, dropping quickly to near 60, having that morning left houston’s humid nearly 100 degree days ;-)

we still smile remembering the girl taking our order say, “oh it was terrible hot today, hit 90!”

we knew what she meant, but now we really know what she meant ;-)

*

so today, we celebrate not a monumental marker like our 30 year anniversary last year, with a grand family gathering in galveston in perfect 80 degree sunshine, and lots of granddaughters running to and from the pool -

today, the monumental marker is another year, and like the meaning of my recent work of the every-day, this added year, our 31st, is really very much that, a monument in itself, of itself – happy and grateful to have this time…

happy 31st anniversary sheila ;-)

Our 31st Anniversary

*

another year’s gone by and again

so full and yet

still filling with so much

more -

we’ve returned to your growing-up

lands and peoples

walked streets your parents walked when

their whispers were waves of feelings

calling you to leave your wings

and be a baby

for them

we’ve sipped coffee at the deli

they must’ve wandered in

snow stuck to their

boots, flakes

finding

eye-lashes and young necks to melt on -

i’ve walked mountains your father

held your hand on and

talked with you of

how the waterfront has changed since when

your brother was your tag-along

drove bridges you said you’d carried him on your

bicycle

we found new ways to see the summer

felt the fall-ish colors and crispy snows you anew me all new

we came and found continuity in our fitness classes

and soon we’ll discover a new knee for you

a new fit

for our life -

we’ve been in texas and vermont, in

austin galveston houston and burlington

all so completely different in the life they bring

and yet in all the differing climes all the changing skies and

all the ways that summers heat and winters freeze

plus all the ways we age

we’ve always stayed the same

happy 31st anniversary sheila ;-)

i love you ;-)

[ added late 050112 ]

this poem, written the few days leading to today, May 1st, our anniversary, is also being linked to dVersepoets’ OpenLinkNight Week 42 Prompt, hosted by Tashtoo

falling also on may 1st, the prompt is a call “to take May Day 2012 as a day in support of the 99%”

i’m assuming that’s most of us ;-)

tashtoo goes on to write about how important poetry has been in her life, and adds,

“No matter your beliefs, your opinions, your grievances, there is room for your words….”

there is not greater honor of the belief in equality and freedom, i believe, than to encourage all opinions, even those opposed to one’s own

but let us remember, that without substantiation, opinions are just that -

and i believe tashtoo is encouraging of that substantiation and expression by each of us

with that in mind, i feel my tributes this year and last, to my relationship with sheila, carry as much validation of the value of effort and time with another person one cares about, as can be expressed in words and images ;-)

below is last year’s 30th anniversary posting

thanks so much ya’ll ;-)

Intro

The Occasion!

today, may day, is sheila and mine’s 30th anniversary

nearly half our lives already!

*

Preparation

i went back and forth, up and down, around and back, trying to decide how if when i would post about this event

this is what i decided -

since i don’t have enough digital pics to do justice to 30 years i’d only post a few, though one is a compilation of photos i took a photo of!

and, since i have at least four poems, two by each of us, written over the years, about anniversaries, i’d post that, 2 of @ by each of us

the “wedding blessing” would work as well, but it’s already posted ;-)

rather than re-word our orignal poems, especially sheila’s! i’ve opted to just do a short commentary, making them personal, for us…

i hope ya’ll enjoy them as much as we have living and creating them ;-)

***

The Poems

all originals by either myself or sheila

short current anniversary-commentary follow each poem

The Photos

also all original

though the details vary, so the photography-detailing, how i played the edges, ala my post, playing my edge with photography, variations, are in the footnotes

*

Anniversary

Anniversaries are a time

of celebrating and

remembering

all the good times

and good things. Of

rejoicing all the bad

ones overcome.

Only, don’t

let it be

just today.

Help each other

celebrate each other.

Help each other

remember each other.

And help recreate

each other’s tomorrow

today and forever.

© 1994-2011 adam light creations – adan lerma

*

there’s a strong sense of shared-ness and recognition that, even if not necessary, for enlightenment surviving or simply existing, we can help each other

actually, knowing it’s a choice, it means even more i think…

This Anniversary

This anniversary is

different from the others.

Not because it’s so many years -

Not because it marks a milestone –

Not because we’re doing

anything special to celebrate.

This time something

really clicked -

Something we’ve wanted for so long

happened.

Something brought us

the closest we’ve ever been.

Yes, this anniversary

is really “something”.

© 1997-2011 adam light creations / sheila lerma

*

sheila wrote this just because she wanted to

many of our poems we’d sell and personalize in the 90′s, were written in response to requests

this poem was one she said she felt compelled to write, and says she still can’t quite place the words as to why this is so

i’ll take her word for it ;-)

First Anniversary

The vows were spoken,

the bond was made

“only” a year ago.

Since then has come a

unique understanding

that only the two of you

can really know.

Dreams spun together -

Plans forged ahead

on a path that’s just begun.

Looking forward to sharing

many more years of caring

like this very special

Year Number One.

©  1997-2011 adam light creations / sheila lerma

*

sheila did write this poem in response to an occasion, i believe our oldest girl’s first wedding anniversary

yet the sentiments are those i’ve heard her express to me many a time, about us

i think she’s right :

“year number one” and “year number thirty” -

are but number-markings set apart

all else remains the same

the path is always…

just beginning…

Our Anniversary of Meeting

I remember the light

around

and in your eyes.

I remember

the quickened interest

in

my own heart and eye.

And I remember imagining -

in a flash flown by -

remembering this, our first moment,

many many times

in times then still so far off.

And I’ll remember all this

now, at

our anniversary of meeting,

as when those dreams of

future memories

had begun becoming one, like us.

©  1995-2011 adam light creations / adan lerma

*

yea, i know ;-) not a wedding anniversary writing, but i guess i could argue, when did we become married, spiritually anyways ;-)

and i really did imagine, back then, when i first saw her, her shirt’s laced high collar touching lightly on her neck, auburn light brown hair pulled back gently across her light skin, that i would remember this moment in the future, and remember knowing i would remember then, now

happy 30th anniversary sheila ;-)

photography series

footnotes

[1]  a pic we had someone take of us this past nov (2011)

besides cropping, i blurred the whole image, then history brushed our faces back in

most heavy photoshop users know they can adjust brush size via the bracket key “["

but if you don't, and use photoshop a lot, don't feel bad, i only found out a few months ago when i finally got tired of not using a keyboard shortcut, and did a search via photoshop's help search ;-)

this was kinda fun literally playing with edges i brought back into focus

a sharpening swipe on my eyes, and a smudge swipe (or two) on the bags under my eyes, and wallah! got the focus i wanted!

[2]  sheila loves putting together collages of actual printed photos, playing with the selection and arrangement

i took advantage of that and grabbed a nice shot of many of our years together

each photo had its own light/dark balancing, so i did a gestalt that evened most of the darkness from the older pics, then bracketed a dodge brush smaller and larger and back, lightening our faces, followed by swipes with the sponge tool where the lightening made the faces too red

dodging the poster board edges around the various photos gave them a neat spotlight glow i like

i had the distinct sensation of feeling that the photos, with that glow around them, plus the memories and feelings they evoked, were like stars seen at night, twinkles of light pulling at the heart, only this time, i knew why…

[3]  final photo dates back to 1981, or so

i left the old-time glare-glaze on the image, rather than removing it, because i felt it enhanced the sensation of our past

the cigarette was also left in, to show where i’ve come from – 19 years of smoking since a late teen, to finally quitting march 1983 – that story will come ;-)

i marginally saturated the color, sharpened and softened and re-sharpend gestaltly, finishing via a slight pull-back with the fade tool (love that feature)

if ever a doubt what a cutie-pie sheila is, here’s proof ;-)

just match it with the first photo 30 years later!

assumptions, like a well warmed bed, are still made to be changed as needed ;-)

*

Assumptions

Hills Across Lake Champlain

Hills Across Lake Champlain

i had assumed my sports poetry ebook would be next -

wrong, i ended up starting with a 30 year sampler, which in many ways is becoming my template for the variety of work i have to offer

i had assumed i would move to a wordpress dot org site so i could do advertising on my site -

wrong, i have more than enough projects at the moment here on my wordpress dot com site

my creative energies are best channeled into getting more of my existing content up into ebooks

i had assumed text based work was the main thing i had to offer, ie, my thoughts and learnings about yoga, fitness, and the arts -

wrong, text based work is just one of the means of expressing the integration of those interests

photography and video are coming up strong; next week i will have a major photography announcement to make

i had assumed personal trainer was my next fitness level to aim for -

wrong, closer to my interests, and more applicable and useful, would be training with someone like jill miller; that is a major direction-assumption change i’ve made in regard to my yoga learnings

but, i had assumed, in my most recent texas to vermont post, that the road to integrating my interests in yoga fitness and the arts might be a great unknown -

and there, i was right ;-)

*

i start to think i’m gonna format or index my book, or a sequence of photos, or my emerging poetry-reading videos, a certain way – but not until the feel and the thought merge, do i gain lasting clarity

needless to say, that’s how i do my yoga ;-)

***

Future Plans Revisited

YouTube Video Still, "Across the Lake"

Video Poems

this is new to have actually have going on, but i’d thought and thought about this, and finally figured out how i’d get it going – just do one!

well, i did do some planning, but all the research into lighting, sound equipment, editing, etc, that’s a learning curve that’ll show up as i learn it ;-)

my poem from earlier this week, “across the lake” has an embedded link to my first youtube poetry reading video, the video is also posted above

in addition to working with what video technology i have right now, i also decided to go with my first and earliest college theatre work, readers theatre

i threw out the notion of some sort of grand performance quality, ultra polished and serious, i decided i just wanted to have fun with this, yea!

so this is “very” informal, not memorized, and in future videos, i may or may not be shaved, or less or more formally dressed (though i will be dressed ;-) ), and may even possibly do two or more reading renditions, to show how intent can alter the same words and images

i know, sounds yogic ;-)

if you like these, please tell your friends!

*

Photo Poems

this is a neat thing to do i just haven’t paid any attention to before – the opening up of being able to work in digital form with imagery and words, via preparing my first ebook, made me much more aware of this art style

but it was a post, “photopoetry,” by a blogger named joy, that showed me how rich and powerful this combination could be

i’m trying my first hand at this in my new photography focussed ebook which i’m well along the way into now; there’s more info on this new ebook project below

meanwhile, i wholeheartedly recommend the above link

*

More eBooks

30 Year Sampler, Stories Poems & Images, Felipe Adan Lerma

as mentioned above, my next ebook, nearly finished, will be photography focussed

i’ve done photography since my first camera as a late teen, and one day, when i dig out my box of old photos and get me a scanner, will post some of that very early work, or should i say fun? ;-) ’cause back then, it was clearly just great fun

i’m posting the 15 images from my first ebook, “Sampler” in larger format with commentary, including details shots of about 7 of those, also including two creative photography posts from this blog, plus the new photo-poem, and two photography poems – it’s a nice size work

i’d wanted to epublish something for 99¢, to see how that would “take” but the cost to the author for selling a work (the cost to download to a buyer) is based on the amount of digital content -

having images doesn’t double or triple the size of the file, it humongasizes it! ;-)  so $2.99 seems to be the support floor at this time

*

so if i want to offer the work i want to offer, much like if i want to offer the yoga classes i want to offer, or post the subject matter i want here on this site, then choices must be made

in either cases, at this point, i’d prefer to offer the content and quality i feel best satisfies myself and the potential person i’m interacting with

win-win as my yoga teacher in houston, lex gillan used to say ;-) during yoga teacher training

and realistically, for the author/artist and the buyer/reader, to have the level of imagery available, embedded in a photo ebook, or ebook of fiction or poems, with color images, for the small additional upload costs (to the author/artist), is a treat well worth it ;-)

*

other ebook things going on, are, re-writing one of the short stories in “sampler” and uploading it as an addition, as a 2011 version to go with the original 1981 version, so people can see the differences in perspective after 30 years

i think it’ll be good for me to see and feel what the differences time and aging, will have in my writing a “today” version, of what i was coming-from, at age 27, single, and hot to shock and write ;-)

*

my sports ebook is still very much on track, and should eventually see the light of someone’s reading lamp or digital backlighting ;-)

it was great fun making my solo zumba music video, then my duet dance music video with sheila, and fully plan on participating once again, once zumba has another dance music video competition

just waiting for some more great music to move to, as paying for a good soundtrack to make a fun dance video isn’t one of my preferences right now ;-)

*

Yoga

the value of yoga, for me, and what i see in the people in our classes, continues to astound me

such a simple thing really, once safe movements and posturings are learned -

which actually helps make poses, simpler!

it means there’s potential, and it means there’s limitations

it means being human with the divine within us

simple, kinda… ;-) but it is a process…

our classes with our core group continue for now in a church basement (which is nicer than it sounds), and we are grateful

New Stuff – Two New Tabs

two of the biggest new changes are on my site

new tabs have been added below the header bar for video and press releases

*

Video Page

Adan Stretching Yoga-like

one is for a page dedicated to listing my new and growing videos, mostly on youtube at this time

my first readers theatre style rendition of a poetry reading of one of my poems, “across the lake” went up this week – very laid back, i anticipate this is just the beginning of these

this video is also embedded near the top of this article

also listed on the new page are videos of scenic footage of vermont, and of art hop, one of the art festivals i’ve showed in

my new video listings page is an important step for me

*

Media Room

the other new tab is dedicated to a page featuring my press releases announcing new events for yoga-adan

most prominently recently, was the announcement of the publication on amazon kindle books of my first ebook, “stories poems & images, 30 year sampler”

this will be an important feature of my site as well

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

there’s so much to offer, i find myself, when i pause to think about it, taking a huge breath

it happens more often now – taking that deep breath, needing calm and energy

and always with those seeming contradictions ;-)

energizing and calming…

yes, yoga does good

namaste – con dios – god be with you

Sports Original Poetry eBook Cover

i’ve often heard myself say i’ve been doing art and arts related activities most my life, including stuff usually thought of as fitness – writing, painting, running, jumping, dancing -

not much sitting still, that would come later ;-)

*

these activities have held my interest all these decades, though usually in some rotating fashion

writing would alternate with painting, and for many years, music, for my arts attention, creating an undulating art chain -

with dance and other fitness things like baseball and jogging alternating and maintaining the fitness link

more recently, those two links or chains, have begun merge

thus, my blog’s mission statement of :

INTEGRATING YOGA FITNESS AND THE ARTS

it’s been an interesting 60 + years so far ;-)

***

A History Recalled

a few of my decades, in a few lines of letters -

First Recalled Writing Efforts

i recall distinctly, one summer, i was about 6-7 years old, sitting in the shade on the porch of our parents duplex apt, my younger brother and sister helping me create more of the neat little pictures and scribbled stories the three of us had been chain producing and putting in our neighbors’ mailbox, when the mailman came up the steps

we all three smiled up at the what seemed a tree of a slate blue uniform, fully expecting to be told how “good” we were doing

instead, in a voice, a bit like my first grade teacher, but not in a lady’s voice of course, “is your mother or father home?”

uh oh…

*

Late Teen Years Efforts

just over a decade passed by without any memorable writing or art events i can recall happening, though my imagination certainly seemed to keep in full gear via learning to play trumpet, square dancing, track, baseball, running & bicycling through bayous and train yards – generally goofing around ;-)

so at about 19 or so, same time i discovered dali and started painting large canvases with nothing on them but an object melting off the edge of some table or chair (which some neighbor girls i remember thought were “really cool”), i started jr college

my first child helen was already over a year old, and i worked full time delivering hot shot packages in my own van, so i attended school at night at south texas jr college, which now is the university of houston downtown campus

it was during this time i also met the folk that introduced me to alice bailey and her idea of the seven rays, the esoteric philosophy society, meditation, and some hatha yoga

this was a busy burst of new exciting things going on in my life

my journalism class would re-open my writing door

*

a fluff assignment, meant to make us want to do it, was to review a movie, any movie, we liked

car wash” was showing then, so it was an easy fit

from that, my first review ever, car wash, sudsy cleansing for the blues, came out; it was pretty good! i’m pretty sure i still have a copy somewhere in one of my stored boxes, probably one of the writings boxes with all the original hand written poems with my son – if i ever find a copy i’ll be sure and post it ;-)

*

now i was hooked, again, on writing!

but it would take me til now to realize why it’d been so easy to do such a nice write-up -

i really liked the movie!

ie, having a strong or passionate connection, and as i’m learning, creating or enhancing a connection, is the “switch” that turns on creativity

ie, ie, being aware, awareness, expanding consciousness, ala yoga ;-)

*

i did write more movie reviews, and even some dance recital reviews, and really enjoyed the process, but a couple years had passed, the economy was tanking, vietnam was still going, and taking care of my family was taking front focus

eventually, after going into the air force, and returning to houston with an honorable discharge full of benefits, including educational benefits, i would return to college -

and more writing…

*

College Efforts

my preparations to leave florida and the air force in ’76 included registering for the fall semester at my old jr college – it had transformed into what is now the university of houston downtown campus

as a kind of circle completion, sheila and i took our afaa choreography and group fitness certification workshops there, and i got to see the wonderful improvements to that great location down near allen’s landing where i’d pretended to be a hippie “back in the day” ;-)

i spent a semester there, transferred to uh’s main campus, then discovered their clear lake campus, where a build-your-own-degree-of-interests type program was offered

freedom to explore my interests, and express them, was something i desperately wanted, and needed…

*

my creativity exploded -

*

with, within a range, freedom to choose classes and create a major suited for me, i’d take 2-3 required basics (which i loved, mostly humanities related) and 2-3 lets-see-how-i-like-this electives

i’d worked most my life, including summers since i was 12, and to take classes full time, courtesy of my GI benefits, and have 2+ weeks off between each semester, well, i was in study-hall heaven sunk into finding everything i might enjoy learning about ;-)

literature, comparative religion, history of ideas, cultural anthropology – oh, and the arts ;-)

pottery, painting, poetry, short stories, novels, stage scripts, screenplays, readers theatre, live theatre, community theatre -

geez!

*

i wrote a science fiction stage play as part of my BA in Theatre

I wrote short stories, i wrote poems

i wrote a novel for my first Masters in English Lit

i wrote another novel for my second Masters in Humanities

one of the novels i wrote initially in first person, was asked by my masters committee to re-write into third person, and did – though most everyone agreed the first person account was sharper, even if much shorter

*

i moved to galveston for the first of many times, destined to stay this first time for over a decade

the fog, and a girl (sorta in the fog too i guess ;-) ) initially attracted me to the island of jean lafitte

something of the grit and sense of having to move carefully to find one’s way, fit me

i started painting again, using dry watercolors the way i’d use oils later

*

my first published poem, when it ended, was published during these college years

eventually, when i have time, and re-access my stored writings, particularly my novels

i’ll review then e-book (i think i just created a new verb ;-) ) them

i sent out many inquiries and manuscripts

a few standard rejections trickled back

my need to express shifted

marrying sheila in ’81, we found ourselves dancing more often, and my eye hungered to express things more in texture and color – i started nearly a decade of working in acrylics

[ late note added 10-01-11 : sheila found a small box with an envelope of short stories from about '81 & '82, that escaped being stored, so sometimes in the "relatively near future" i'll see about transcribing them to digital; but this'll be after my current ebook, and now also e-article, projects are done ;-) ]

late note added 10-08-11 : new decision : will epublish 3 of the short stories first, at a great incentive price point, then the sampler poetry collection, and then the sports poetry ebook (which keep growing ;-) ) ]

*

The 90′s – Selling Personalized Poems

i’d begun showing in art shows, festivals, and malls in the early 80,s -

dickens on the strand, mardi gras in galveston, the houston international and montrose festivals in houston, town square festivals around texas, street fairs, churches, barns, and community centers – you’d think i was doing guerilla yoga!

maybe i was ;-)

art shows, of any kind, are rarely quite busy for the whole duration

busy spurts are common, dead periods too

so i began handwriting poems

in my booth

*

somebody asked what i was doing

“writin’”

“can i see?”

“sure, just a poem”

“not bad, reminds me of my dad too”

“yea? thanks (i guess)”

“can you fix me one too, but from me to my dad?”

“uh, sure!”

*

within the year i’d bought the cheapest portable printer (this was the early ninety’s remember, way back ;-) ) – it only printed black in

experimenting, i found a decent parchment tone paper i liked, used the same foam core sources i had for my art prints, sized everything to a standard size for easy framing, and wallah! i’d added a personalizing “arty” portion to my booth’s “artsy” offerings

slow periods i kept writing, still using pen or pencil on a small stencil pad of paper

it saved room, cost little, and i like the “feel” of it all

*

somebody new asked what i was doing?

“are you writing more of these?”

“tryin’ to,” i smiled

“do you have more?”

“naw, just these”

“can you write me one for my mom?”

“oh, i’ve got some, they’re -”

“i saw those…while you were on break”

oh…”

“she’s a teacher”

ohhh…”

*

and i started writing occupations

then more family stuff, uncles, aunts, grandma

anniversaries, sports, special requests like graduating from nursing school

once i got started with some subjects, like baseball, i’d create a poem for everything i could think of; these, the whole range of something like baseball, will be in my first poetry ebook, on sports

sheila started joining me at certain shows we felt i couldn’t handle

some shows we couldn’t go to the bathroom or eat

some shows we shoulda stayed home ;-)

*

we went to the national stationery show in ny at the javits center, where almost a decade later, i’d go to art expo

both trips were great fun, and both trips found us finding great contacts and opportunities

but when we returned to galveston (or austin), and the momentum ended

the internet, by the late 90′s was, we thought, booming ;-)

so went online

*

Early Online Efforts

both in the late 90′s, then again in the late 2000′s, a decade later, we tried some sort of online offering of the poems, but with only minimal success

in the late 90′s, most of the effort was toward fulfilling wholesale orders of unpersonalized writings to gift and card shops, and had some success

in the late 2000′s, though technology and the internet had advanced light years, success was still minimal, though a bit more was accomplished via google’s adsense program

both experiments involved a great deal of face time selling, and left little time for creating

also, neither attempt allowed for a full representation of the scope of our titles

that has now changed ;-)

*

Emergence of the Kindle

after apple, with the mac, the closest continuous companies i’ve consistently stayed with, are netflix and amazon

it is with amazon’s enlarging of the publishing field, beyond anything possible or imaginable before, that the future has circled back to the days sheila and i would set up in a mall, lay out half a dozen tables, place our hand-made containers on them, lift the handmade lids we’d made for those containers, and present hundreds and hundreds of titles that people told us they wanted…

my ebook, Sports – Original Poems, is the first evidence of that….

Integrating Yoga Fitness and the Arts

if there is a thread in my life, if there are threads that make the best of a rope to hang onto when you get to the end of your rope (an idea expressed by thomas jefferson), then yoga, the conscious knowledge of the awareness from yoga, has been the thread that’s tied my two life long interests – fitness / sports & the arts

Wishes

do i wish i’d known more about epublishing when it’d first started, and gotten started a year or two years ago?

sure…

do i wish all this today had been available back in the late 70′s and early 80′s when i had my first deep burst of writing creativity?

of course!

but does that make me any less happy that it is possible today?

nope ;-)

How We Escaped the Texas Heat Wave of 2011, We Moved ;-)

***

Intro

after experiencing both an earthquake and a hurricane this past week here in new england, i figured this would be as good a time as any to declare a new beginning, in this, my third of my series of texas to vermont posts ;-)

unlike my preparations and transition articles, where i saw where i was and how things were changing in mine and sheila’s life, the material of our new beginning is only now beginning to show itself more fully

i’d expected that the new beginning would simply be a setting up of new classes, and start again -

but it’s been much much more…

***

New Stuff

Videos

Sheila & Adan in "Pause" video 1

Sheila & Adan in "Pause" video 1

oh boy, never would i have imagined that i’d make a solo music-dance video, and that sheila and i would then follow that with one of us together -

much less to submit to a zumba contest ;-)

the learning curve, just for these basic creations, was fairly steep for me, but in time, these’ll get easier, and more fun stuff should begin to show up, gradually ;-)

*

Zumba®

sheila and i are in process of learning, creating, and practicing enough routines to eventually offer a zumba gold express class

we are also looking fwd to a future specialty zumba is preparing, currently being called “sentao”

sentao means seated in spanish, and a fully functional chair class is something our main target group (seniors, de-conditioned adults, folks coming back from illness or injury or inactivity) needs very much

i’ve mentioned in various posts how chair work is good in so many ways, even very fit individuals -

it’s great as a recovery routine -

and as something to learn to share with someone one cares for but, needs “company” to feel comfortable doing an exercise

the awareness and body-mind connection engendered by yoga, i’ve found, helps tremendously in learning new ways to move, and being more expressive – so we see a nice synergy here

*

Line Dance

the same type of synergy and continuity of motion and awareness exists in enjoying doing line dance

the (usually) repetitive, more melodic moving and breathing patterns in line dance are, i’ve felt, even more quickly enhanced by yogic breathing exercises and poses

because of the smaller amount of choreography involved, and the smaller range of motion (rom) usually involved, more seniors seem to bridge the pose work of yoga to movement to music

for the same reasons involving choreography, sheila and i feel line dance will probably be our first aerobic-dance class we’ll feature to go with our yoga classes, and will be an extension of the sequence of classes we currently offer at the fitness center downtown in burlington

the line dance class, like our projected zumba gold class, is being planned as an express class, approx 30 minutes

we’ll of course post an article (and more) when that comes about ;-)

*

Sequence Classes

we’ve been fortunate to develop a series of classes that offer a progressive sequence of activity and awareness, from very basic gentle longer held yoga poses, to chair based functional fitness work, to aerobic dance basics

all the classes begin with three yogic breath exercises, to promote a fuller calming breath and a stronger core

both our zumba express and line dance classes will also include one or two short yogic breathing exercises, plus a warmup and cooldown

all these components, breath work, warmups, and cooldowns, are too important and too beneficial not to include -

as i expressed in “teaching limitations is teaching awareness (a beginner’s view)” -

“from the start of my yoga-adan blog, i began my earliest posts with the intent to present and demonstrate the disarmingly simple idea that :

each person is unique, yet similar to other people”

that idea has only strengthened over time…

*

Vermont

being in burlington, and vermont in general, has so far been a real treat, a very new treat, for me

even sheila, born and raised here, a graduate of the university of vermont, feels “almost” new here – she has spent the last 30+ years in texas ;-)

the terrain and the climate are an incredible new experience (beyond visiting for a week or so)

coming from the texas gulf coastal plain and even from the hill country of central texas, this is much more varied in terrain, and unbelievably cooler!

*

what hasn’t been as new, is the type of people here in vermont -

they are as close to what i consider texans as any place i’ve been -

very independent, proud of their history, and yet collective in spirit

during the recent impact from hurricane irene, the local and state news sources provided the kind of care and newscasting any community could hope for

without the following consistent twitter contributions, following the state’s impact and response to the storm would have been nearly impossible

@keithmontpVT - @Seven_Days - @vermontweather

my deep and sincere thanks to all three…

*

there’s a growth in the integration of my interests in yoga, fitness, and the arts, that i believe directly benefits from the energy of the land and the people of vermont

*

Art Hop

My Art Hop Px Pic 1

My Art Hop Px Pic 1

art hop!

though i didn’t have new art (vermont art) to bring art hop last week, the venue is new, very new, to me

hugely spread out over the south end of burlington

it feels, when sheila & i attended it last year when we visited her brother, like a combination of the ruckus-ness of the westheimer arts festival of the 80′s in houston, melded to any two days of sxsw in austin nowadays -

that’s saying a lot of good things ’bout art hop ;-)

***

Video from Lake Champlain Vermont

sheila and i quickly caught sight of several 1/2 price and 2 for 1 offering companies here (as in texas), jumpon-it and livingsocial

when $7 tickets for a northern lights 1 1/2 hr sightseeing tour on lake champlain came up, we grabbed them, and i was able to shoot a bit of what we saw

the video is very experimental / learning-curve for me

so my apologies for the lack of polish ;-)

no original audio – ‘cept for a chuckle at the end of a surprise cameo by sheila ;-)

but did put in some soundtrack from some selections that imovie provided

i also played with various styles and types and durations of captions

so kinda a hodge podge finger painting like mud paddy cakes kind of video ;-) fun!

*

i’ve created a clickable link on the video image, but just in case, below the image, is the link for copy / paste

did i mention i’m still sliding ’round the learning curve? ;-)

*

*

one of the sights on the video, is of rock point, of which i did a painting back in the 80′s

sheila’s dad had requested it, and had it for many years before he passed away

today we have it hanging in a great spot in our dining room

*

[ the image of "rock point, vermont" will be included in an in-progress ebook of one year of images from this site ]

Rock Point, Vermont

Rock Point, Vermont - Original Painting by Adan Lerma 1986

*

the tour above provided commentary and information about the lake and surrounding landmarks -

evidently, the forestry around rock point is original to the time of first settlement, and has been kept from being harvested

the land is owned by the episcopalian diocese of vermont, and provides free passes for entry to the park there – “though donations are greatly appreciated ;-) fair enough!

***

New Future Plans

Ebooks

ahhh, another new technology i’m looking into ;-)

my first ebooks planned, at this point, will be of my original poetry

i’ll still post poems online, though, with commentary, and with nearly 1000 poems between sheila & myself, i could post one a week for 20 years, and still not be fully online!

what this means is, waiting for a subject collection, rather than the ebook, will be a hopefully pleasant process, but also a long one – something i kinda like myself anyways ;-)

so the ebook will provide a subject collection right away

but this is going to take time

the format to successfully upload onto platforms, like the kindle, requires a shift in how to create page breaks, an index, etc

*

the ebooks planned will have the poems presented by subject matter, and i will have more info in future posts regarding which subjects will be first, how many titles will be included, and what sub-topic-headings might be included

additionally, one or more features would be included not available or appropriate for the blog, and better presented via the ebook

*

some sites i’ve been getting what appears to be useful info about this are :

one spoon at a time, tristan higbee, and threepress consulting

all are new to me, but again, seem very useful so far

*

Online Studies

this is more vague in my mind than the ebooks project, but something that keeps coming to mind when i’m in a held pose, or moving in a particularly enjoyable aerobic dance step

my son has suggested several instructional ideas that have promise

but i know less about how to develop this than the idea before or that follows, so currently i feel this is further down the learning curve, and thus the time-curve, than some of the other projects

time, though, as usual, will tell – this seed need more time yet in the ground ;-)

*

Website

Battery Park Burlington, Vermont Lake View

*

first and most importantly, no changes in current content or availability would or will change

second, i have no ads, visible or hidden, affiliate or prepaid, anywhere on my site  [1]

“if” and when that changes, i will be letting everyone know, ahead of time…

and still, as per my first point, no content would change

i would not and will not charge for articles

or poems i choose to post

or images of art work

or photos

nor my fabulous yak yak commentaries ;-)

*

plus, if i decided to have some affiliate ads, i would never email them to anyone

the ads would only be on a site page, and be fully appropriate for the topic

an example would be ad to amazon for topic related books etc

*

both roseanne at it’s all yoga baby, and nancy at flying yogini, have written about this, moving to or having a blog format/host that allows and enables more creative freedom, including the ability to have appropriate ads and/or affiliate links

integrity is number one with both the folk above on their sites, giving me positive examples of generating income on their sites

also my previous art site had google ads, and i didn’t have any problem with the ad types

so a site with even more control over which type ads, and for what type product or person or company, would be a fairly natural, even welcome, extension for me

*

as nancy has blogged about, she experienced transition pains in moving from an ad free dot com address, to that of a more creative-allowing dot org home

that awareness is, for now, keeping me from adding video and other features to my current dot com site; new video, as it comes out (beginning with my very beginner feature on our boat trip on lake champlain above) i’ll probably post on youtube

audio would be interesting to play with too

so one day… ;-)

*

Meanwhile

my attention must remain on continuing to learn, continuing to present as best of material i can understand and present that integrates having fun and staying healthy via yoga, fitness, and the arts

that, after all, is what my life is about ;-)

it’s what i think i model…

***

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

My Integration of Yoga, Fitness, and the Arts is a Great Unknown

my integration-effort to understand and experience the underlying oneness i’ve always sensed in yoga, fitness activities, and the arts, began simply and easily enough

i’d write about yoga, and it’d easily remind me of something similar in aerobic dance movement, or painting, or poetry, or writing, or music – you get the idea ;-)

obviously i’m leading up to saying it’s no longer as easy a process as i once believed -

not because it’s harder to see or feel or sense the connections…

but because the connections have become so dense!

the pathways of discovery are everywhere

they lead me down shortcuts

across new main roads

deeper into openings

of surprise sunlight

i no longer know where i’ll end up

or, more accurately, think i know where the road curves

*

what is fiddling with video splicing into my ideas ?

how does that affect teaching poses in class ?

when are brush strokes and touch adjustments alike ?

why does the sound of words on paper feel like breath on hands upon the keyboard ?

am i listening to the murmurs of caring i am hearing?

*

my mind and heart together know the map

but life is new everyday

new places, new roads, new rivers, will be explored

some updates will map instantly

others, not so quickly ;-)

*

Biggest Surprise – Continuity in Vermont

i expected a lot of unexpected surprises in moving to vermont

i’d visited a bit, here and there, for a week or two, throughout the years since i met sheila

intellectually, i knew the air would be drier (most the time)

and cooler ;-)

that the land would rise and fall more continually, at times abruptly

hills would be small mountains back in my part of texas

and i knew experiencing this would still be…new

rumpled land tossed across yards and streets like morning blankets left unmade til evening

the big trees would hold the wind and shake themselves with it in a yogic-fire breath of release

i haven’t even made it out of summer yet!

what will my first full autumn colors bring to my heart’s eyes ?

winters ice and sand-dunes of snow ?

i expect all that -

my surprise, is how texan the people of vermont are

and how vermonty my texanness is

staunch in freedom

free in fairness

valuing

wealth in people

*

there’s a continuity with my kind of people -

i should’ve known, with a wife from vermont ;-)

Yoga 2.0 – “Threads of Yoga : a Remix”

special thanks to carol horton for her shared link on facebook ;-)

threads of yoga, a remix, from the folk at yoga 2.0, Matthew Remski and Scott Petrie, is the kind of contemporary re-look at enduring ancient thought that greatly appeals to me

i, literally, don’t know if i agree with all these guys have come up with – i say literally ’cause i’m not completely familiar with their line of thought -

a remix, as per the authors’ words, differs from a translation :

“The purpose of a remix is equal parts homage, adventure, reclamation, and pleasure. It collects the raw beats and hooks of the past and brands them, transparently, with the pulse of the present…

“In the yoga 2.0 idiom, this pulse says a few key things:

    • relationship is more important than private bliss,
    • metaphysics distracts from presence,
    • consciousness is evolving new questions, and –
    • yoga is always changing, because its practitioners are”

the quality of their continuity of effort will probably keep me returning to their line of thought

i’ve always been aware of, and been good, with connections

seeing continuities, similarities, attachments

yoga has helped me refine this

sometimes with my own brain-smile humor ;-)

heart-bone is connected to the mind-bone is connected to the ankle-balance-bone is connected to the core-bone is connected to my art-bone is connected to my word-bone

yes, it was time for a new beginning ;-)

In Vermont

today will be my first full day in my new location with sheila, her home state and town of burlington, vermont

Shore & Lake View, Burlington Vt

different from arriving to visit, we’re here to stay awhile ;-)

Transition

i call this a transition, not a beginning, or preparation, like my previous texas to vermont post, because i have a final in-progress step toward having the pieces for integrating my interests in yoga, fitness, and the arts:

further fitness education encompassing the gestalt that would enable me to become nationally certified as a personal trainer

when my wife sheila and i became AFAA group fitness certified, i realized that the breadth of knowledge i wanted to know and share, that fit so well with yoga, dance, jazzercise, zumba, resistance work, so much! was one more certification away

barring those pesky unknowns i can’t by definition know, i plan to end the year fully certified to be able to offer, not only private yoga sessions, but sessions grounded in fitness theory and practice to the level of a personal trainer

i believe, with my other interests in art and poetry, this will be enough to balance those very heady life-long passions of mine ;-)

*

Balancing

while many yogi’s and yogini’s understandingly are driven to dive into the yogic depths of bhakti devotion, i find myself needing to balance an immersion-like childhood of mysticism, devotion, and emotional faith

i grew up not only in a heavily traditional conservative catholic environment, but one within the spanish speaking hispanic culture of south and southeast texas

incense, bells, angels, devils, unknowns, plus both wonderous and horrific faith-based knowns

i know the power and draw of total devotion, letting hot wax from hand held candles drip and cool upon my skin as family and parishioners chant-walked the night, in and out a tiny wood-frame stain-glass-filled church

i know the power of prayer that says that prayer not only heals and forgives, but crosses into purgatory, setting souls free -

i don’t know how much of the above is actually true, in terms of having happened beyond my childhood beliefs and years, but they were a potent reality at the time -

and i don’t, and can’t dismiss them, til proven otherwise -

but i don’t rely on them…

i seek balance -

A New Beginning Begins to Be Born

so my plan is to balance -

Sunset Sky over Lake Champlain, Burlington Vt, Original Photography Adan Lerma

to balance my faith with my science -

if i accept a fitness concept as a fact, a working paradigm, it becomes part of me, my science

each moment i study and gain perspective on our life here on earth, my imagined new beginning nears closer to its birth

Bloggin’

A Humored Stance

as so often seems to happen, as i prepared this article, i’ve come upon articles expressing much of what i am wanting to express, but differently enough to warrant, i believe, my sharing a link to them with you

*

of all places, though why i’m surprised i’m not sure ;-) yogadork has an article by j brown, “screw union with the divine

don’t let the irreverent title throw you (if it does) – this is a serious down-to-earth well thought out piece; if nothing else just take a sip ;-)

here’s a snip, from the article,

“An important distinction needs to be made: Monks do yoga practice for different reasons then moms and dads”

*

and then there’s a wonderful piece, an interview, that cora wen put up links to on her facebook page, “BKS Iyengar Interview – Times of India May 25, 2011,” subtitled “YOGA IS AN INDIAN HERITAGE, NOT A HINDU PROPERTY”

there’s so much humanity and compassionate understanding just in this little interview, but his emphasis, as so often in his work, i think, was on balance

regarding heart vs head, he says,

“They are both strong in their own spheres. But I find that nations which are geographically centred in the world map — such as Russia and Africa — have the best of both approaches. They use the head as well as their heart to their advantage”

in our shrinking world of expanding awareness, using both to our advantage, very much appeals to me ;-)

*

My Own Blog Plans

my own blog plans then, are to emphasize, though not exclusively, posts that reflect what i need to concentrate on for a while, fitness information

i’ll of course, as i do with my paintings or photography or poems, draw what lines and interweavings i can see and feel, to yoga, to both the reader’s and my own attention

after all, shouldn’t waste a convenient synergy, should i? ;-)

Moving to Vermont

family

this time next month, barring the usual unknowns, sheila and i will be in her home state of vermont

we’ve spent a little over a year in galveston, where we’ve lived off and on (with austin) for many decades, enjoying being near family at both destinations -

and now will spend some time near sheila’s family in burlington

most everyone who could, has warned me of the vt winter

we’ll have a summer and autumn to gird my blood ;-)

*

teaching

we also both look forward to other opportunities, including resuming and continuing our yoga teaching and studies

I’d particularly like to learn more fitness and anatomy i can apply to integrating fitness with yoga and the arts

possibly even starting one-on-one sessions with clients

*

Burlington VtGalveston TxAustin Tx

though both cities are similar in size, and are in two of the most fiercely independent states in america -

burlington is more like austin, in terms of cafes, yoga and fitness studios (including zumba & jazzercise) -

plus both burlington and austin are centers for their respective states for conventions and destination meetings -

though galveston does have houston only an hour away (some parts like clear lake 1/2 an hour, others like tomball are nearly 2 hrs), burlington again seems more like austin in having a strong thriving metro area

the population density favors a deeper group of people to possibly reach with our style of slow slow yoga ;-) mixed with healthy doses of fitness info and application

Blog Plans

poems and photos and art

i present no pictures or goodbyes here in this post

instead, after mother’s day, most days this month of may, i will present poems and photos and art i’ve created, to say goodbye for now to my home state of texas

and maybe something new here and there ;-)

*

i am working on a number of topics that interest me, doing research, thinking, tinkering, and will have my more usual subject matter, interspersed with art and poetry of course, in june ;-)

*

mother’s day week

this week, mother’s day week, i will present one or more poems i’ve written, mostly from the 90′s, about moms

as i mentioned in my poetry post about a beginning yoga teacher, i will often over time create variations on a theme, both in photos, paintings, and poems -

not always, but it happens ;-)

*

after mother’s day

i’ll begin posting some art and photos and poetry, and possibly a more straight forward yoga-fitness piece or two

“when it ended” – a poem from 1980/81, may be first

the tone of the poem is unlike most my poetry in the 90′s, which were lighter, more infused with my relationship with sheila, which began in early 1980

it captures the feeling of the few years leading up to meeting her, and, looking back, seems to encapsulate knowing who i’d found

*

last weeks before vermont

will be filled with thoughts and images of galveston, austin, and other points in texas, with one final new poem to end our run here

we’ll have said our goodbye-we’ll-stay-touch to friends and family -

and to our dear fellow yoga students in our classes, we’re all fellow students, in our yoga classes, our zumba line dance and ballroom times, and of course our jazzercise friends, all very special…

namaste – con dios – god be with you
