Assumptions

Little River Along Mountain Road in Stowe Area

Little River Along Mountain Road in Stowe Area © Felipe Adan Lerma

in the almost year and a half my wife and i have been in vermont, being able to visit and be near her family, where she was born and grew up, all the way to graduating from the university of vermont, we have wavered between leaving immediately ;-) , staying longer, and leaving as planned, around this time, but not sure exactly to where we would go next

in that time, our assumptions of what we’ve wanted / needed / should do, have also changed and fluxed, morphed and grown, tweaked and clarified

we finally settled on going back to texas, at least for the holidays, then finally doing a life long dream plan of staying in paris for a month or more, and enjoying that fantasy on at least on a more leisurely level

with news that our youngest girl was expecting her first child, we flipped those plans to going to paris first, then texas, ready to greet the newest grandchild

at this time, that plan seems to be holding ;-)

below, then, is an update on my texas to vermont series of posts, possibly my last one, with a wrap-up and expectations regarding fitness and the arts

***

On to Paris

Sheila Taking Tourists' Pictures in Paris, circa 2002

Sheila Taking Tourists’ Pictures in Paris, circa 2002

first, once we reach our new exit-from-vermont flight date, due to hurricane sandy, we’re off to paris as originally planned

i have to say though, our week-long delay here at the sun & ski inn has put us into what so far has been the best place to recover from the work we went through leaving our apartment (cleaning and packing etc, seems much tougher the older we get ;-) ) – the image above is the view from our sliding doors at the back of our unit

we’ve had secure for paris what promises to be a nice way to spend an extended time of about five weeks during the non-tourist season – more on that once we’re there

we’ll of course have pictures, and i’ll start a new photopoem series, much like the ones i have for vermont and the birds in galveston, something i look fwd to doing at least weekly

Back to Texas

Sheila by Hike & Bike Austin Texas '05

Sheila by Hike & Bike Austin Texas ’05

before the christmas holidays we’ll be headed back to texas for a year or more, or good, who knows ;-)

it’ll have been the longest i’ve been away from my home state, and three years since we’ve lived in austin (with our 1 1/2 year stay in galveston)

burlington, many people who live here have told me, is the miniature northern version of austin, with its culture, energy, music, good eats, hills, and nearby water -

flip the longish summers in austin with the equal length longish winters in burlington, grace away the over one and a half million population difference, and yes, i’d have to agree, incredibly and often, pleasantly true ;-)

Photo Poems

it appears i’ll mostly be posting photopoems for the near term -

they combine the visual and written arts, and for me are fun things to do

besides numerous stand-alone photopoems, many written for prompts from dVersePoets, I currently have two series, though the latter, the bird series, are really photos with captions – they were my pre-runner to my current photopoem format ;-)

the other set, the vermont photopoem series, is a more fully developed idea of what i like to do for now – it lets me present an image (which i have fun choosing and working up) and a short verse (that i enjoy tying to what the image compels from me)

once in paris, i fully hope to start a new thread, the paris photopoems series ;-)

*

i do want to mention that, besides prompts from dVersePoets, the first impetus to think of combining my own image and verse in its current form, came from a photopoem by jomul, who has an interesting site i’d recommend browsing

Adan + 40 Lbs with Sheila on Bike Path, Austin Texas ’05 :
Did I Mention I Didn’t Get Fit (again) Until 2008?

i’d often wondered how i could better motivate my fellow seniors in the classes sheila and i teach, that they too could improve from what ever fitness level they were at, if they wished -

i should have had and shown them this picture ;-) maybe still will

and this post certainly can ;-)

i even was wearing my 100 club exercise t-shirt!! it’s hilarious!

and more so ’cause the way to fitness is NOT just exercise (attentive movement), NOT just diet (sensible eating), but breathing, consistency, persistence, habit – did i mention i had a good partner? ;-) yeah, that too ;-)

but to my senior classes here in vermont, those through the The Y, both the early morning aerobics jazzing line-dancing ladies, but also the chair based gonna do it afternoon seniors – my deepest sincerest thank you !!!

sheila and i will see what we see once we’re back in texas, fitness class teaching wise, but we’ll always miss these great folks ;-)

“Stowed Away at Stowe”

the white sky rolled a bit of

itself

over the mountain in a curl of fog-cloud

and the steepled church welcomed

it

anyways

autumn’s fall color remnants

whispered

an equal welcome

because

stowed away at stowe is the

secret

scarcely hidden

that the times always burn

quite simply

OK, Maybe the Last PhotoPoem in Vermont? ;-)

yes, i said my previous vermont photopoem was my last, but that was before our trip away from my wife’s home state got derailed / delayed for a week

obviously we are extremely fortunate to have a place to stay that is not only comfortable, but beautiful

stowe, by texas standards, is down the road from burlington, and was worth a look for a place to stay that, price-wise, easily rivaled staying in burlington

that the stowe area is what is considered “off-season” right now, i hadn’t anticipated, but gladly welcome ;-)

judging by the images i’m coming across, i’d say, barring the unknown, i’ll have some more vermont photopoems before our scheduled flight out next week

our stay at the sun & ski inn has been a treat so far, and we’re hopeful for a full stay of the same ;-)

stayed tuned, and hope you’ll catch the next photopoem!

*

Dining in Stowe

well, maybe not “dining” but definitely lunch ;-)

today we experimented at Frida’s Taqueria and Grill, and tasted one of the rare mexican food fares we’ve found here in vermont

tasty, in a setting that’s clean, colorful, and fun, the food is worthwhile and affordable

throw in that “off-season” factor, and getting a nice size table by a wide clear window, was easy and enjoyable, all completed by eager smiling service

we shared three different types of fish tacos, a huge serving of guacamole in a container of genuine volcano rock, a couple of other sides, and we were pleasantly full at an extremely reasonable price -

plus i got my one and only t-shirt (finally) during my nearly one and a half year stay with sheila here in vermont!

and snow showers tonight? we’ll see ;-)

One More Vermont Header Image

my wife and i thought we would be gone from vermont at this time, but our departure delay due to hurricane sandy has us staying in my wife’s beautiful home state just a little longer

vermont, unlike stretches and areas of my home state, texas, seems to have few areas one couldn’t say was beautiful, or at least nice to look at

the state is like one giant postcard ;-)

even in the dreariest of times, this remains so; whether it’s because this is new to me, or is more generally so for most anyone, this is another great example -

my previous header image, of the peak of fall foliage up near stowe at smuggler’s notch, was an easy one, though involving fantastic luck getting to that image’s spot at the right moment before it was gone

this image, in mid autumn here, also very near stowe, at one of the trapp family lodge’s dining spots, is of the lull between the colors of fall and the snows of winter – yet, for me, still a beauty

*

The Cropping Challenge

in this instance, my task was choosing between a higher or lower horizontal line in my cropping

one click higher, and my focus swept away from the trees and old wood structure to the mountains -

one click lower, and i felt a great sweep up the land to the tree line, but lost the sense of power from the mountains in the background -

so this header is a compromise i’m satisfied with: clarity of the trees and farmhouse cafe, and enough visibility of the mountains to see the fog-cloud rolling over some of the tops

*

The Exposure Setting Challenge

then, adjusting the exposure setting of the foreground (grass, trees, and building) while differently adjusting what i wanted to show in the sky and mountain slopes, took some experimentation with photoshop’s exposure tool, including the brush tool set to a history setting -

all in all, a fun creative project ;-)

*

Prayers for Those Suffering Because of Hurricane Sandy

finally, as i enjoyed my creative work in a temporary and quite comfortable setting, i know from past experience the suffering many are feeling trying to manage to get through the increasingly cold wet weather, often without power and other needs – our prayers to all

and for those who have lost loved ones, which i have not had yet to experience from a storm, my deepest possible prayers

best wishes to all….

yet it feels like

i can even see the tiny sandbar

pretending to be a

continent

and why not?

in a day’s blink

Last PhotoPoem in Vermont

but not the last poem or photopoem about vermont

we’re just moving, that’s all ;-)

my wife and i went from austin to galveston for a bit to be near family in houston, then on to here, in vermont, for the same reason

now, with a scheduled detour in paris, we’ll be returning to austin texas, by mid december

i’d prefer to yak a bit more, say a bit more, explain a bit more, but i’m typing this as my tether to the cable internet is about to be shut off

then i’ll need to find a wifi place to finish this by linking to dversepoets

definitely another page turning, i think it’ll be fun seeing what paris will be like this time of year; i’ve read the lights for the holidays are really special – i’ll let you know ;-)

*

Hurricane Sandy’s Effect, Minor – One Week Delay Going to Paris!

got calls just this evening that due to heavy damage at nyc airports, all legs of our flights cancelled, am re-scheduling, but earliest avail for both of us at same price etc is one week out

as i say in my poem, in a day’s blink ;-)

and if “every sandbar is a continent / when you breathe there” – then every twist & turn delay is another adventure in the day’s many blinks ;-)

now my wife and i have a whole ‘nother view of a feature done in the media here, called “stuck in vermont”

*

Hurricane Sandy’s Effect, Major – No Power, Cold Temps, Contaminated Water

beyond all the above, are our prayers for the folks and families suffering and coping with sudden devastation and uncertainty

because, having living most my life along the texas gulf coast, despite the welcome aid of all our fellow neighbors, when one suddenly returns to living day-to-day, moment to moment, without safe water, food, or shelter, the reminder-blink of our very human vulnerability and dependence on each other, is truly shocking in its long-range impact -

and is something i’ve become more and more grateful for having learned -

natasha, below, from dVersePoets, says it well…

**

dVersePoets

submitted to dVersePoets prompt for OpenLinkNight – Week 68, Oct 30th 2012

hosted by tashtoo

“It’s the Season of the Witch and those of us along the eastern seaboard have named her Sandy.  Here, we’ll feel her steam through the overnight, but for those of you out there dealing with her full frontal assault, please know our thoughts and prayers are with you.”

“perhaps we can take some comfort in knowing our virtual pub has proven  quite strong against the elements and the mood, as always, is welcoming and warm…”

take a look, if you can, at their fine site, but stay and be safe with loved ones and family

Commentary

Technicals

some exposure adjustment, the tiniest touch of saturation, and that’s it -

no cropping, sharpening, or tilting

just a lucky beauty of a shot ;-)

Leddy Park

by texas standards, leddy park here in burlington vermont is almost walking distance from our apartment, and certainly a close-by drive to get to

admission season is over, so anyone can drive on in to the huge almost hidden parking area -

an enclosed ice skating arena sits between the parking lot and lake champlain and views of the adirondacks

my wife grew up nearby there, and it’s a treat hearing her talk about trips she took there with her dad as a child

Choosing a Title

i hesitated titling this image poem “nature’s cathedral” but it fit so well, i just couldn’t not name it so

the canopy of shade and light is like stain glass i think, with some romanesque arches at the top of the frame – the image of this spot being a cathedral, nature’s cathedral, was immediate

sometimes, giving in to one’s first impulse is far and beyond the right thing to do ;-)

dVersePoets

Commentary

Technicals

a tiny tilt counter clock wise of the total frame – it seemed to set the path in an energy angle that felt more hopeful

a few percentage points of added saturation – a dab, like a pinch of ginger; the mix was already so rich

touches with the dodge tool – enough to open my eyes just a touch wider on the light reflection crossing the road, added same along the further side of the road reaching back toward the viewer

that’s it ;-) not much, just enough i think ;-)

Thompson Park

part of Thompson Park, which is part of the Stowe Recreation Path, this view is just a fraction of the whole trail, which meanders by a brook, goes underneath the road between the city of Stowe and the sky resorts, and wanders back toward the town

the path itself is used by both bicyclists and walkers

Autumn Leaves in Vermont

storms had passed through the days before, and the stillness of the leaves seem frozen where the winds left off

for a texas boy like myself, this was an incredible visual and textural treat

the variety of foliage, when everything is green, is gorgeous, yet more muted, with the layers within one’s visual distance almost flattened

it seems, for me, that in fall colors, because each bush and tree and shrub and layer is in its own process from green through yellows reds and russets, i can more easily, and more pleasurably, different the vegetation

from where i stood, to where i could see, seemed more delineated, and space gained in a nuanced depth

it’s a beauty, that’s for sure ;-)

happy fall weather ya’ll ;-)

**

dVersePoets

submitted to dVersePoets prompt : OpenLinkNight – Week 65 (100812)

excerpt,

As poets, we’re all explorers, making our way across that space to discover some kind of truth about ourselves and the world around us…

i didn’t know this would be this week’s dVersePoets’ theme when i chose this post’s image and wrote its small verse, but it seems to have matched up well enough

best wishes everyone ;-)

a beauty of an unexpected view, walking along leddy park with sheila, one of the first times she could finally go and walk outside the house besides the front walk

we crept up to the opening, like we were the ones invading someone’s space ;-)

and right away i had the thought then, how much of what i felt, was what the first native inhabitants’ sensed, seeing strange water craft floating by so deliberately…

just a spot, one spot, with that vantage look -

the limbs’ll grow different another year another season, and that whole moment will have also changed, amazing…

two moments in one, a sameness from the past, with a uniqueness only in the present….

dVersePoets

submitted to dVersePoets prompt : OpenLinkNight – Week 61 (9/11)

hosted by brian miller, one of the two co-founders, with personal commentary about his day on 9/11

excerpt,

“take just a moment to remember—a moment of silence if you will for all the lives lost, all the heroes, not only that day but everyday around our world”

brian’s own poetry submission, on his site, he partially describes his work thus :

“I don’t know what happened to the guy in the poem above—its a true incident that happened back during our recovery from the derecho. Life changes in a moment….”

though neither brian’s nor my poem were written in regard to 9/11, it is good to remember the many way our lives can change so quickly

and 9/11, in new york city that fateful day, will always be one of the most profound to have affected so many of us…so instantly…

it’s when we forget these moments, that, i believe, it is worst….

The Moment’s Eye

these last few weeks of summer here in northern vermont, the moments one can sense the shift of seasons is happening a bit later than last summer -

so though i only have two vermont summers to compare, at least i’m not just imagining ;-)

what i do imagine, is what those weather winks, nature’s foreshadowing, is bringing -

leaves in quantities of red and yellows you’d think nature was an artist who favored monochromes, with winter whites, so the native vermonters say, now not far behind

but whether it’s because my birthday’s nearing now (in oct), or what the weatherman here says has been an unusually hot summer, or my love of autumn colors (rare treat for a gulf coast texas boy) – that lighthouse blink is warning me, no welcoming me, back into my favored harbor of the year ;-)

happy last of summer first of coming fall folks!

I’m a WHAT Kind of Writer! Romance? – Part 1

4 Jul

2 Shorts, a Poem, & a Sampler (fiction)***

Pictured : “2 Stories, a Poem, & a Sampler (fiction)” and “The Old American Artist, a Love Story.”

An Anthology of two fiction stories and a love poem, from 1981, plus a four chapter sampler from my first new fiction in over thirty years, “The Old American Artist, a Love Story.” – FREE at participating outlets.

plus…

The Old American Artist, a Love StoryA romance and an artist’s story, how could it not be a love story? ;-)

We all love a story that shows how a loving pair, meeting obstacles in life, overcome that challenge, and resolve to love each other. But what happens during the “lived happily ever after” part? What are the details, what might the process be, achieving and living that post-crisis life?

This arc, from boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy regains girl, morphs, in this first of three books, in the trilogy Triptych, into that fuller story of life, and love.

It’s Been Awhile ;-)

Sheila’s Knee Replacement

goodness it’s been awhile since i’ve posted to my blog, shame on me, but only a little bit ;-)

many know i’ve been helping my wife with her recovery from full knee replacement surgery

my blog motto includes the phrase, “it’s a process…” and if anything, it applies just as much if not more to rebuilding a major weight-bearing mobile joint such as the knee!

but the process is continuing, and sheila is making remarkable, if painful, progress -

more of her challenge comes from pulling back enough to get enough recovery so she can continue without getting so tired and pained…

but as anyone who’s gotten back in shape or done a physical recovery like sheila is doing, determining when to push and when to rest, is a tricky twangy jittery kind of line that changes each day and more often each part of the day

so all in all, huge recognition to her for her very determined work and progress ;-)

Teaching

in addition, i’ve been fortunate enough to be called to sub for quite a few other senior classes with the Y plus my two regular seniors classes

teaching up to 3x my normal load of classes i’ve gotten the opportunity to meet new people and practice my own frequent suggestion that it’s best to warm up slowly and fully ;-)

i’ve gotten good opportunities to demo over-load fatigue, and how to ease into a routine so that, by a third of the way through, the muscles and movement are much smoother and enjoyable

eBooks

lastly, in-between, in moments, i’ve continued to create ebooks from my previous material -

plus create new material, including my first fiction in over thirty years!

this week i will post more on that latter development

Romance Writer? Me?!?!

Genres

first, i should address the title of this post, “I’m WHAT Kind of Writer! Romance?”

what brought that up to begin with is, in searching for which possible genres to categorize my new fiction work (novellas) with at online booksellers, i came across discussions of what qualifies as a “romance” – at least in terms of being a genre

those discussions led me to the association Romance Writers of America, located in my hometown of houston, texas ;-)

Romance Writers of America

a non-profit org, they have this definition :

Two basic elements comprise every romance novel: a central love story and an emotionally-satisfying and optimistic ending.

i thought over my past and current work, and except for places-specific and occupation-specific poetry, almost all my stories and much of my poetry, fit that description

poetry examples include “heart beats” written nearly 20 years ago and posted at the beginning of my blogging early last year, to “racing in exile on father’s day” written just a couple of weeks ago

do these poems have a central love story? yes, i think so

do these poems have an emotionally-satisfying and optimistic ending? ditto

and in storage, in houston of all places ;-) are several novels i wrote in the late 70s and early 80s, all somewhat or totally to do with a love interest relationship, though i’d have to re-read them to see if they had “an optimistic ending” ;-)

New Work & Old, “2 Stories, a Poem, & a Sampler (fiction)” – FREE at Participating Outlets

now i’ve come full circle back to those early fiction roots, compiling a new ebook, “2 shorts, a poem, & a sampler (fiction)” that shows two short stories, one of which i would very much consider a romance

my poetry example, in the same book above, is also a romance i believe, though i certainly didn’t think of it as such “way back then” ;-)

and included in the new ebook is a four chapter sampling from my new novella, which itself is the first of three novels of a series entitled, Triptych

***

First New Fiction in Over 30 Years!

“The Old American Artist, a Love Story”

New Novella, Cross Genre? Romance and Art

thus my newest fiction in quite awhile, “the old american artist, a love story” qualifies, i believe, at the very least, as a dual- or cross-genre romance

the short portion of my product description for this new work reads :

Short Blurb

A romance and an artist’s story, how could it not be a love story?

We all love a story that shows how a loving pair, meeting obstacles in life, overcome that challenge, and resolve to love each other. But what happens during the “lived happily ever after” part? What are the details, what might the process be, achieving and living that post-crisis life?

This arc, from boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy regains girl, morphs, in this first of three books, in the trilogy Triptych, into that fuller story of life, and love.

there’s much more of course, to the story, thus the “cross” or “dual” romance notation

new posts coming this week will detail this further, including with samples

***

This Week

beginning with today’s post, i will be uploading a small posting each day (or so), beginning with a bit more about the anthology book, “2 shorts, a poem, & a sampler (fiction)” -

then i’ll proceed by posting one of the four sample chapters each day, as a post, with short commentary, with more information about the novella and it’s planned arc as part of a trilogy

*

so with that, i wish all of us, myself and my wife included ;-) all the best

except for the rarest of springs in texas, where the mild winter jumped to summer ;-) this is the longest spring season i’ve ever experienced -

thus so many spring headers i’ve used this year ;-)

this is a relatively recently rejuvenated area nearby in the neighboring town of winooski

the name winooski comes from the indian tribe abenaki, original to this area, and means onion, which evidently grows in abundance along the river

i particularly like this ’cause i was very surprised, back in austin, to see how beautiful an onion plant can actually be

and spring is only about half way through to summer, on the calendar, and, evidently, here in vermont too ;-)
