Tidbitstidbits are, by definition, tiny bits*a google search indicates further elaboration -qualities such as “pleasing” and “choice” are mentioned -”small” and “bite-sized” also come up…*thus, this series of tidbits, of small bite-sized posts, are both my choice, and, hopefully, pleasing ;-) if this tidbit comes from, or leads to, a much longer, more complex post, a link will be provided, thank you much***

Happy Birthday to Me! ;-)

Adan at Table with Light from Window

Adan at Table with Light from Window

*

sheila captured this image with the light coming through the window at skinny pancake here in burlington

the decorative bottle must’ve brought us good light ;-)

*

it might seem silly to have an article with a title that includes both balance and yoga, and yet be a “tidbit” post ;-)

but this is my tidbit birthday gift to myself ;-)

today i crack into the 60′s!

i’m 61! today!! yay!!!

*

Being a Libra

i’ve always told myself my astrological sign didn’t “really” mean anything, and i long ago quit buying libra calendars and reading my daily horoscope in the paper

but the idea of libra, of balance, weighing pros and cons, desires and aversions -

that has remained with me, and lately, i’ve come to embrace it -

though, to tell the truth, more like an icky thick sweat shirt hug with hands not pressing anything to tightly ;-)

*

Balance, Then

ok, here’s the main course

since i can remember, before i’d heard about astrological signs, or even spoke english, and thought “libre” meant “free” rather than balance, i was always searching for the counter-weight to ideas -

this led to a running raucous dialog with my dad, who i realize now, entertained my endless questioning and back & forth arguments with a patience i just didn’t understand (but now quietly thank him for)

equality was a driving force in my feelings and thinking, i even searched out and read the constitution of the united states when i was about 12, but that immediately led to my literal application of my inherent right to happiness, and that didn’t sit too well, with either of my parents ;-)

*

Balance, Now

oh, i still like to argue sides, many a patient blogger has given me patient leeway in my thoughts -

but rather than feeling that “balance” is the equal positioning of the wheel in all directions, forward & backward plus side to side, so that it may roll without wobble, i now (recently) view balance differently

balance is now the counter effort thought activity feeling intent movement that allows me to maintain the “leaning” i’m more favoring at any given time

notice i’ve given myself lots of wiggle room to change my “leaning” and thus what and how i’d need to balance ;-)

*

Examples

Physical

if i’m gonna enjoy dancer’s pose, playfully, i still first have to find that day’s – “today’s” balance, which may mean i need to wear shoes, or use a chair, or hold a lower center of gravity, or stay stretched upward and leg-curled longer

so, if i’m using a chair with a one-hand balance at the back of the chair with one hand, and my free hand holding my free-hand-side foot, if i need to feel gravity, my weight, or a grounding, i’m not so much concerned with pulled my lifted left up or outward -

my “balance” that day is a sort of hunkering down, probably to regain or reset my physical balance (and maybe my mental or emotional balances too, depending what’s been going on)

then say i’m feeling playful, kinda light hearted anyways, and wanna play ;-) -

ok, now my balance is staying “hunkered” yet allowing myself to still be playful in this less stretched less reaching posture -

my emotional playful-need balancing has to counter-weight my gravity-grounding-need balancing

*

Balance is a Living Act

balance then is not simply a set ratio of extended and curled limbs, unresponsive to heart and mind urges for creative expression of being alive, and yet centered -

balance is the counter-weighting of multiple concerns that can vary day-to-day, morning to evening, year to year even

core and back may need more tensile input into the length and duration of the pose’s dance

mind and heart may have other needs – as may a child or significant other

balance is a living act -

in essence i must find, or discover, or allow to appear, that which will balance my intent -

did i want to stretch in dual directions and feel the sky touch the soil?

or did i want to feel my core fine tune my limbs like time touching a sunset?

so much is possible in dancer’s pose just balancing interests!

***

Yogic Balance, Out in the World

much has come up recently about what essentially is a question of how does one balance one’s life between personal and social good

yoga modern, via an intriguing article from carol horton, just this week, asked just, “has yoga created a culture of escape?” with a subtitle on the site’s opening page, of, “refuge and renewal vs. escape and denial.”

it’s especially intriguing to me, because i remember standing at the front doorway of the esoteric philosophy center in houston at the beginning of the 70s with the director, bill dimitri, the two of us watching a large group of hari krishnas chant on the large long front lawn (that i’d mow occasionally in exchange for being to attend meditation classes there) -

and i remember distinctly saying how those kids (folk my own age then of course ;-) ) were just escaping from having to think!

and bill smiled, waited a bit, and said, “they’re still just innocent…”

*

another look, but at those at the occupied zones helping bring up conversation about the balance of individual and social action, is nicely written by caryn mirriam-goldberg, poet laureate of kansas, in her article, “What Democracy Looks Like Today at Occupy Wall Street: Everyday Magic, Day 426“.

images and vignettes are given and the sense of the innocence and well-meaning of the people there seems authentic and real

my comment posted there is as i’ve voiced regularly recently, that some media attention to the historical perspective to the 60s and earlier movements, would help people see this is a continuing effort stretching back way before my time ;-)

and hopefully provide some buffer to probable inevitable backlash, which is natural, since nothing moves in a straight line, even light evidently ;-)

*

this is the same concern, i’d been voicing “back in the day”

and anyone with some historical and media grit, could probably point out the countless recurring times just since the last 1800s, that it was questioned as to whether yoga was inducing escapism

the split among the new world colonies in the 1600s, between those who were stringent believers in hard work and no play, vs those who thought a little time in the new world sun might do a body good, probably ended up in a similar “face off”

and didn’t the greeks sport a similar divide among themselves?  apollo and dionysus?

*

my point, regarding yogic balance, isn’t that the whole question of which type of potential escapism, social involvement or self involvement is “the” escapism, but rather that neither is -

yogic balance, for me, as i mentioned in the beginning, is the tilting of the scales of one’s activities, so as to maintain balanced enough to continue the main activity one wants to do

so, maybe, wanting quiet time to write or paint or sing or simply sit and watch the sun and clouds, alone or with a significant other, might require some approving of the tweaking of the tax code or how our elected representative “represent” us -

and yet, wanting to be intimately and intricately involved in the day to day operations of how people can get along, the law, might just as well in turn require reflection and a responsiveness to one’s internal needs

*

yogic balance, it seems, is as much a spiritual-mental-emotional act, as it is standing on one foot with the other curled behind and held by the hand not stretched out reaching for the not-so-low-hanging-fruit of inspiration

it’s hard to express, and maybe caryn’s ending words in her article noted above says it best,

“The rest of the world, just as I had left it, wasn’t configured the way of the occupation, so no wonder that the main criticism everyone has about this movement has to do with how little of it translates into clear soundbites. But then, that’s why there is an occupation in the first place: to be the change so many of us seek.”

and of course, being the change, can, and must be doable, well, anywhere…

eventually ;-)

My Favorite Moment of Balance

my mom had gone to the museum of fine arts in houston with sheila, my middle sister, and myself, to see an art show and give her a chance walk somewhere’s different

mom’s quite a walker

anyway, we’d seen the impressionist exhibit traveling through town, and were meandering among the renaissance work where i knew there’d be religious art she’s always enjoying standing in front of

we were in a particularly long room, the west side of an upper floor of the newer wing of the museum, and i noticed mom had stopped wandering from painting to painting, and settled herself, arms crossed, feet planted, in front of what looked like a last supper rendition

the painting was sebastiano ricci’s 1720 “last supper”

*

[ image not currently accessible to show, but may be seen on the mfa houston site ]

*

one by one, the three of us “younger folk” ;-) made our way to my mom’s side and peered to see what she saw so differently she was magnetized there

“you like that one, mom?”

“si”

sheila chimed in, “it’s beautiful isn’t it?”

then my sister, “a lot like the famous one”

“mira,” says my mom, “la mujer tiene ropa para limpiar”

i looked and looked and saw it, the woman to the left from our view, holding a laundry basket of wash, watching the goings on of the last supper

then my mom pointed to the plates of food, and added, in english, grinning and chuckling, “somebody has to do the cleaning”

*

we all have a part to play in making / creating / being creative change in our world

my quote from the end of my article i posted about this, “my mom at the museum,” shortly after her 84th birthday, still holds for me today,

“if yoga is, partially at least, the development of a balanced sense of the importance of all facets of our life, then my mom, devoutly catholic, has made that attribute her own

yoga, it seems, like oneness, as part of oneness, is like the air -

no one owns it, we all need it….”

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

Prioritizing Balances

i was intending to make a short video about dancers pose, to add to my just budding youtube channel of, for now, “playing around” videos

but have come up across several self-imposed deadlines :

finishing this article for my birthday -

finishing my 1st epublishing project, also for my birthday

creating a video would jeopardize one or both of the “finishings” ;-)

the video can wait, and be a looked-forward-to project for me, hopefully in the near future

choices have to be made -

and we do what we can that best balances what is needed, for us and for others

my mom knew this ;-)

*

Back to Innocence

and maybe the psychological point of balance, mine anyways, is when, somehow, through the balancing of the tilts and sways and seesaws, the “the effort to entertain our personal tilt without falling” as i put it at the beginning of this post, is finding and keeping a point of innocence

much as i concluded in my post on baseball and yoga

much as i saw in my child in “angel baby

much as i hope we retain each day

balanced-ly of course ;-)

How We Escaped the Texas Heat Wave of 2011, We Moved ;-)

***

Intro

after experiencing both an earthquake and a hurricane this past week here in new england, i figured this would be as good a time as any to declare a new beginning, in this, my third of my series of texas to vermont posts ;-)

unlike my preparations and transition articles, where i saw where i was and how things were changing in mine and sheila’s life, the material of our new beginning is only now beginning to show itself more fully

i’d expected that the new beginning would simply be a setting up of new classes, and start again -

but it’s been much much more…

***

New Stuff

Videos

Sheila & Adan in "Pause" video 1

Sheila & Adan in "Pause" video 1

oh boy, never would i have imagined that i’d make a solo music-dance video, and that sheila and i would then follow that with one of us together -

much less to submit to a zumba contest ;-)

the learning curve, just for these basic creations, was fairly steep for me, but in time, these’ll get easier, and more fun stuff should begin to show up, gradually ;-)

*

Zumba®

sheila and i are in process of learning, creating, and practicing enough routines to eventually offer a zumba gold express class

we are also looking fwd to a future specialty zumba is preparing, currently being called “sentao”

sentao means seated in spanish, and a fully functional chair class is something our main target group (seniors, de-conditioned adults, folks coming back from illness or injury or inactivity) needs very much

i’ve mentioned in various posts how chair work is good in so many ways, even very fit individuals -

it’s great as a recovery routine -

and as something to learn to share with someone one cares for but, needs “company” to feel comfortable doing an exercise

the awareness and body-mind connection engendered by yoga, i’ve found, helps tremendously in learning new ways to move, and being more expressive – so we see a nice synergy here

*

Line Dance

the same type of synergy and continuity of motion and awareness exists in enjoying doing line dance

the (usually) repetitive, more melodic moving and breathing patterns in line dance are, i’ve felt, even more quickly enhanced by yogic breathing exercises and poses

because of the smaller amount of choreography involved, and the smaller range of motion (rom) usually involved, more seniors seem to bridge the pose work of yoga to movement to music

for the same reasons involving choreography, sheila and i feel line dance will probably be our first aerobic-dance class we’ll feature to go with our yoga classes, and will be an extension of the sequence of classes we currently offer at the fitness center downtown in burlington

the line dance class, like our projected zumba gold class, is being planned as an express class, approx 30 minutes

we’ll of course post an article (and more) when that comes about ;-)

*

Sequence Classes

we’ve been fortunate to develop a series of classes that offer a progressive sequence of activity and awareness, from very basic gentle longer held yoga poses, to chair based functional fitness work, to aerobic dance basics

all the classes begin with three yogic breath exercises, to promote a fuller calming breath and a stronger core

both our zumba express and line dance classes will also include one or two short yogic breathing exercises, plus a warmup and cooldown

all these components, breath work, warmups, and cooldowns, are too important and too beneficial not to include -

as i expressed in “teaching limitations is teaching awareness (a beginner’s view)” -

“from the start of my yoga-adan blog, i began my earliest posts with the intent to present and demonstrate the disarmingly simple idea that :

each person is unique, yet similar to other people”

that idea has only strengthened over time…

*

Vermont

being in burlington, and vermont in general, has so far been a real treat, a very new treat, for me

even sheila, born and raised here, a graduate of the university of vermont, feels “almost” new here – she has spent the last 30+ years in texas ;-)

the terrain and the climate are an incredible new experience (beyond visiting for a week or so)

coming from the texas gulf coastal plain and even from the hill country of central texas, this is much more varied in terrain, and unbelievably cooler!

*

what hasn’t been as new, is the type of people here in vermont -

they are as close to what i consider texans as any place i’ve been -

very independent, proud of their history, and yet collective in spirit

during the recent impact from hurricane irene, the local and state news sources provided the kind of care and newscasting any community could hope for

without the following consistent twitter contributions, following the state’s impact and response to the storm would have been nearly impossible

@keithmontpVT - @Seven_Days - @vermontweather

my deep and sincere thanks to all three…

*

there’s a growth in the integration of my interests in yoga, fitness, and the arts, that i believe directly benefits from the energy of the land and the people of vermont

*

Art Hop

My Art Hop Px Pic 1

My Art Hop Px Pic 1

art hop!

though i didn’t have new art (vermont art) to bring art hop last week, the venue is new, very new, to me

hugely spread out over the south end of burlington

it feels, when sheila & i attended it last year when we visited her brother, like a combination of the ruckus-ness of the westheimer arts festival of the 80′s in houston, melded to any two days of sxsw in austin nowadays -

that’s saying a lot of good things ’bout art hop ;-)

***

Video from Lake Champlain Vermont

sheila and i quickly caught sight of several 1/2 price and 2 for 1 offering companies here (as in texas), jumpon-it and livingsocial

when $7 tickets for a northern lights 1 1/2 hr sightseeing tour on lake champlain came up, we grabbed them, and i was able to shoot a bit of what we saw

the video is very experimental / learning-curve for me

so my apologies for the lack of polish ;-)

no original audio – ‘cept for a chuckle at the end of a surprise cameo by sheila ;-)

but did put in some soundtrack from some selections that imovie provided

i also played with various styles and types and durations of captions

so kinda a hodge podge finger painting like mud paddy cakes kind of video ;-) fun!

*

i’ve created a clickable link on the video image, but just in case, below the image, is the link for copy / paste

did i mention i’m still sliding ’round the learning curve? ;-)

*

*

one of the sights on the video, is of rock point, of which i did a painting back in the 80′s

sheila’s dad had requested it, and had it for many years before he passed away

today we have it hanging in a great spot in our dining room

*

[ the image of "rock point, vermont" will be included in an in-progress ebook of one year of images from this site ]

*

the tour above provided commentary and information about the lake and surrounding landmarks -

evidently, the forestry around rock point is original to the time of first settlement, and has been kept from being harvested

the land is owned by the episcopalian diocese of vermont, and provides free passes for entry to the park there – “though donations are greatly appreciated ;-) fair enough!

***

New Future Plans

Ebooks

ahhh, another new technology i’m looking into ;-)

my first ebooks planned, at this point, will be of my original poetry

i’ll still post poems online, though, with commentary, and with nearly 1000 poems between sheila & myself, i could post one a week for 20 years, and still not be fully online!

what this means is, waiting for a subject collection, rather than the ebook, will be a hopefully pleasant process, but also a long one – something i kinda like myself anyways ;-)

so the ebook will provide a subject collection right away

but this is going to take time

the format to successfully upload onto platforms, like the kindle, requires a shift in how to create page breaks, an index, etc

*

the ebooks planned will have the poems presented by subject matter, and i will have more info in future posts regarding which subjects will be first, how many titles will be included, and what sub-topic-headings might be included

additionally, one or more features would be included not available or appropriate for the blog, and better presented via the ebook

*

some sites i’ve been getting what appears to be useful info about this are :

one spoon at a time, tristan higbee, and threepress consulting

all are new to me, but again, seem very useful so far

*

Online Studies

this is more vague in my mind than the ebooks project, but something that keeps coming to mind when i’m in a held pose, or moving in a particularly enjoyable aerobic dance step

my son has suggested several instructional ideas that have promise

but i know less about how to develop this than the idea before or that follows, so currently i feel this is further down the learning curve, and thus the time-curve, than some of the other projects

time, though, as usual, will tell – this seed need more time yet in the ground ;-)

*

Website

Battery Park Burlington, Vermont Lake View

*

first and most importantly, no changes in current content or availability would or will change

second, i have no ads, visible or hidden, affiliate or prepaid, anywhere on my site  [1]

“if” and when that changes, i will be letting everyone know, ahead of time…

and still, as per my first point, no content would change

i would not and will not charge for articles

or poems i choose to post

or images of art work

or photos

nor my fabulous yak yak commentaries ;-)

*

plus, if i decided to have some affiliate ads, i would never email them to anyone

the ads would only be on a site page, and be fully appropriate for the topic

an example would be ad to amazon for topic related books etc

*

both roseanne at it’s all yoga baby, and nancy at flying yogini, have written about this, moving to or having a blog format/host that allows and enables more creative freedom, including the ability to have appropriate ads and/or affiliate links

integrity is number one with both the folk above on their sites, giving me positive examples of generating income on their sites

also my previous art site had google ads, and i didn’t have any problem with the ad types

so a site with even more control over which type ads, and for what type product or person or company, would be a fairly natural, even welcome, extension for me

*

as nancy has blogged about, she experienced transition pains in moving from an ad free dot com address, to that of a more creative-allowing dot org home

that awareness is, for now, keeping me from adding video and other features to my current dot com site; new video, as it comes out (beginning with my very beginner feature on our boat trip on lake champlain above) i’ll probably post on youtube

audio would be interesting to play with too

so one day… ;-)

*

Meanwhile

my attention must remain on continuing to learn, continuing to present as best of material i can understand and present that integrates having fun and staying healthy via yoga, fitness, and the arts

that, after all, is what my life is about ;-)

it’s what i think i model…

***

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

My Integration of Yoga, Fitness, and the Arts is a Great Unknown

my integration-effort to understand and experience the underlying oneness i’ve always sensed in yoga, fitness activities, and the arts, began simply and easily enough

i’d write about yoga, and it’d easily remind me of something similar in aerobic dance movement, or painting, or poetry, or writing, or music – you get the idea ;-)

obviously i’m leading up to saying it’s no longer as easy a process as i once believed -

not because it’s harder to see or feel or sense the connections…

but because the connections have become so dense!

the pathways of discovery are everywhere

they lead me down shortcuts

across new main roads

deeper into openings

of surprise sunlight

i no longer know where i’ll end up

or, more accurately, think i know where the road curves

*

what is fiddling with video splicing into my ideas ?

how does that affect teaching poses in class ?

when are brush strokes and touch adjustments alike ?

why does the sound of words on paper feel like breath on hands upon the keyboard ?

am i listening to the murmurs of caring i am hearing?

*

my mind and heart together know the map

but life is new everyday

new places, new roads, new rivers, will be explored

some updates will map instantly

others, not so quickly ;-)

*

Biggest Surprise – Continuity in Vermont

i expected a lot of unexpected surprises in moving to vermont

i’d visited a bit, here and there, for a week or two, throughout the years since i met sheila

intellectually, i knew the air would be drier (most the time)

and cooler ;-)

that the land would rise and fall more continually, at times abruptly

hills would be small mountains back in my part of texas

and i knew experiencing this would still be…new

rumpled land tossed across yards and streets like morning blankets left unmade til evening

the big trees would hold the wind and shake themselves with it in a yogic-fire breath of release

i haven’t even made it out of summer yet!

what will my first full autumn colors bring to my heart’s eyes ?

winters ice and sand-dunes of snow ?

i expect all that -

my surprise, is how texan the people of vermont are

and how vermonty my texanness is

staunch in freedom

free in fairness

valuing

wealth in people

*

there’s a continuity with my kind of people -

i should’ve known, with a wife from vermont ;-)

*

Yoga 2.0 – “Threads of Yoga : a Remix”

special thanks to carol horton for her shared link on facebook ;-)

threads of yoga, a remix, from the folk at yoga 2.0, Matthew Remski and Scott Petrie, is the kind of contemporary re-look at enduring ancient thought that greatly appeals to me

i, literally, don’t know if i agree with all these guys have come up with – i say literally ’cause i’m not completely familiar with their line of thought -

a remix, as per the authors’ words, differs from a translation :

“The purpose of a remix is equal parts homage, adventure, reclamation, and pleasure. It collects the raw beats and hooks of the past and brands them, transparently, with the pulse of the present…

“In the yoga 2.0 idiom, this pulse says a few key things:

    • relationship is more important than private bliss,
    • metaphysics distracts from presence,
    • consciousness is evolving new questions, and –
    • yoga is always changing, because its practitioners are”

the quality of their continuity of effort will probably keep me returning to their line of thought

*

i’ve always been aware of, and been good, with connections

seeing continuities, similarities, attachments

yoga has helped me refine this

sometimes with my own brain-smile humor ;-)

heart-bone is connected to the mind-bone is connected to the ankle-balance-bone is connected to the core-bone is connected to my art-bone is connected to my word-bone

yes, it was time for a new beginning ;-)

integrating yoga fitness and the arts!

*

finally -

decided i’d keep my originating DBA (“doing business as”) i’ve had from the early 80′s, plus re-direct the traffic i’d had for my old art & poetry website, adanlerma.com, to yoga-adan.com also

this provides me a paper, mental, emotional, and spiritual continuity ;-)

*

re-directing my old site’s traffic to here is what clinched the decision to create this post

people searching for old titles of poems or art work or reviews, now know i’m here

and i figured, well, might as well make the best of it ;-) so, here goes -

*

Those searching for previously posted poetry or art :

***

3 cups 40x60, circa early 80's

3 cups 40x60, circa early 80s

[2]

***

poetry titles to do with education (special ed, elementary school teacher, etc), sports (baseball, basketball, etc), family (mom, sister, etc), special occasions (mis quince anos, wedding, etc), and more philosophical work (i know, you’re thinking, more philosophical than this already!) like “riches within, etc) -

there are evidently numerous searches failing to find some poems that were on my previous site, so i’ll try and place those here on my new site first

and -

art images of austin, texas countryside, new york city, san antonio, galveston, and older abstracts -

those are either coming, or already posted, but please be aware, it’s a slow process ;-)

next week, i post my first full featured art work (much like i do my poetry), “Swan on Lady Bird Lake” – a contemporary impressionist piece from 2002

*

to search, try one or more of these :

* the “poetry” or “art” category will be a good way to find them

* another method is via the excellent search box at the top of each page

* and a final method is via the category list near the top right, also on each page

* oh, and there’s a category drop-down search box right above my “tweety bird” twitter tweets ;-)

email newsletter :

if a person would like to be notified of new postings, please sign up for the email newsletter alerts – news of new posts are sent out automatically

*

though i’ll more “consciously” be trying to tie my poetry writings (integrating them) to my growing awareness and interest in yoga and fitness, most people who are familiar with my work and writings, will probably think, “well, he’s just added the name yoga to what he was already saying” -

i can’t much disagree with that ;-)

integrating my art work to yoga, is only slightly different, as it’s visual

but my commentary will show, that there also, not much has changed in my views

added, though, will be bits of my photography i hadn’t featured on my previous site

[1]  adam light creations was a temporary name i came up with when trying to name my first real efforts to market my art and other efforts -

the name has happened to stick ;-)

my idea was, that adam light creations reflected :

me – i’m adan, which is spanish for adam; and adam usually means the first, and these marketing beginnings were to be my first consciously made efforts

light – i’d always heard, and believed, that if something had a sense of light to it, visually or impressionistically so within the person, that was a good thing

creations – and these then, were my first creations with the intent to create light in people’s lives

not much’s changed since then, though, as evident, i’ve now consciously added all the fitness work i was interested in back then, like jogging, dance, etc

[2]  ”3 cups” is an early 80′s acrylic on linen canvas painting i did as a series of “cup” images

i’d wanted something that reflected my love of the sea and shells and flowers, and figured “cups” would be a good generic – then people could “choose” what they felt the image represented, if anything ;-)

currently, one of our granddaughters has “dibs” on it ;-)

Part 3

intro thought

i remember, after a particularly vigorous playful rubbing i’d given one of my kitties, of hearing how pets could only take “so much” of a person’s loving, before becoming over-stimulated, unable to endure more -

sometimes just running off with a yell-meow, sometimes taking a nip of me on the skip-out and away, sometimes squirming and turning afraid and unwilling to turn on me but needing release -

are we so different?

from buddhanet’s buddhist studies

“There is no need to meditate for a long time: just remain quietly until you are a little open and able to connect with your heart essence. That is the main point”

we may yearn to be at-one with oneness again, but we are, by definition, only a part of that oneness -

can i splice my 110 volt extension cord onto the main trunk line on the telephone pole out by the road?

no, even though they both run the same juice; the voltage differential is just too severe – my kitty loves me, but a bit at a time ;-) ah yes, the wisdom of animals…

***

[1]

***

so i asked, at the end of my previous post, part 2 of this short inquiry into meditation, what do i think about meditation, what it is, or means?

i truly do believe it includes both my experiences of, and the writing of, each of my poems, “Cross Country” and “Heart Beats

my readings on meditation, abridged as they are, plus talks from lex at my immersion, and really my own experiences of the moments i tried to describe in those two poems, including the experience i had writing each one, convince me at this point in my life, that, yes, i was in a meditative state in all those instances…

i’m enough of an individual, and ornery enough ;-) to want that to be the end of it

but i’m also enough of a social creature, with a memory of many an inadvertent mistake, to gladly take some respected third party re-inforcement ;-)

***

three respected third party re-inforcements

***

1)

in the quote below from Buddhist Meditation in the Theravada tradition, i find a strong compliment to my way of thinking of meditation

“meditation is inherently experiential. It is not theoretical. In the practice of mediation you become sensitive to the actual experience of living, to how things feel. You do not sit around developing subtle and aesthetic thoughts about living. You live. Vipassana meditation more than anything else is learning to live”

***

2)

and the following quote is scientific back-up for the existence of true benefits for practicing meditation

“The gamma activity in some of the long-term practitioners was the highest ever recorded in healthy human beings…This type of research is helpful to both practitioners of meditation and to the scientific community…

“It is helpful to meditators because it gives us an idea of what is happening to our brains as we progress in our practice. It provides some independent evidence that our practice does actually make a difference. And this can lead to greater conviction, which is always welcome in a meditation practice…

“Uncertainty is one of the biggest obstacles to continued progress.”

the Himalayan Institute is of courses a widely respected organization and movement

two additional points come out here:

a) the idea is that of “practicing” meditation, it is a practice, not a set thing; again relating back to the idea of meditation being experiential, as the buddhist quote above points out

and,

b) “uncertainty” is a genuine obstacle, a point i will refer to again in the mid-future when i do a small post on the chakras

***

3)

i’ll end my external third-party rah-rah for myself ;-)  with this quote, from a speech last month, by the dalai lama

“a quote of the Buddha: ‘A follower of mine should not accept my teaching out of faith or devotion but rather out of investigation on the subject matter, seeing its meaning and then reproducing it into practice.’”

and no  ;-)  i don’t follow the dalai, or am very familiar with his work or speeches, i was led to this speech via a link on the himalayan institute, to the mind & life website

but i must say i was impressed with the humanity and non-authoritarianism of the text of the speech

and there were some interesting perspectives from the dalai lama regarding the failure, so far, of any spiritual teachings to create a lasting peace on our earth; this is strong stuff from a guy who’s in a spiritual-historical lineage, so i’d recommend a peak at his speech anyways

***

Flowers Rising Flowers Ready

my conclusions on the question of “meditation, am i doing it yet”

meditation is experiential

meditation has been explained, diced and labeled, promoted enough to qualify as a huge ego trip, yet, obviously, has merit ;-)

meditation involves concentration, imagination, and an almost emotional union of mind to body to observation that eventually excludes nothing:  neither our thoughts our yearnings our hopes our recognitions our union with god or other souls, and especially, our conscious awareness of all the myriad facets of life

being here now, as the old-new-age saying goes….

maybe,

an RPE for meditation?

…why not  ;-)

***

in the near future, i’ll do a post or two on my meditation experiences during my recent immersion with lex gillan – i’m still processing much of it ;-)

in the meantime, i plan to finally look into a book i bought at that time, “guided meditations, Explorations, and healings” by stephen levine

Rowing Past the Walking Bridge

Rowing Past the Walking Bridge

Part 2

straight off, gonna say the best  working definition i have of meditation right now, that fits with my experiences outlined in part 1 yesterday, is from lex gillan

i recently experienced an immersion he hosted, and his simple clean approach, the depths of the studies he described he’d undertook, and the breadth of the range of meditation approaches he’s studied, all gave me confidence of where he was coming from

quite simply, he feels meditation is a means of keeping oneself in the present

that meditation is one of two modes: concentration, or visualization; the latter being usually guided, but apparently best if concentration has already been highly developed

lex also felt that those of a right brain leaning, might benefit more from concentration, while those of a left brain slant, would benefit by expanding imaginative visualization

remember, the goal is to remain attentive, conscious, and aware of being in one’s body, in the present, yet also either concentrating or using visualization (question: is there a way to do visualization, still be present in one’s body, and not be concentrating?)

so, there’s a con-joining of experiencing (a process) and awareness (being)

lex also felt that reaching true samadhi (bliss), was only possible for nano moments – being true to being in our bodies restrained the amount of time possible in total immersion with oneness

ie, my take: we’re grounded earthlings, like it or not

now, before anyone goes off calling lex and saying, “what!!!!” – the above is my remembrance - my interpretation – and my application [1] of what lex spoke of and led us through, during a daring array of breathings chants and eye-to-eye guided visualizations, many of them powerful indeed  ;-)

***

definitions

i like zipping down a google search and, preferably, finding what i need quickly

so one of the things i’ve noticed over years of looking up stuff is, a homogeneous blend of search answers usually means a high degree of confidence, and agreement

in my part 2 post on asanas, “do i HAVE to do the pose this way, no, but…” i used RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) to make a few points; my google reference to my RPE definition search was pretty uniform, reflecting my RPE definition experience with AFAA, SilverSneakers, and Zumba

thus, one of the things i noticed in my google search for the definition of “meditation is” was a possible high degree of disparity, relative to other searches i do

the following are, as far as i can tell, highly credible worthwhile sites; each offering insights i found worth pondering, worth trying to merge…

one definition, says meditation is “Whatever you do with awareness is meditation.”

sounds good – but the article goes on to say this does not include worship, prayer, gardening, jogging, music, or art, “creating confusion or misunderstanding”

yes, i’m confused

if worship or prayer or gardening or jogging or music or art is done with awareness, where’s the definitional problem? [2]

and i’ll admit right now, i’m inexperienced enough i might just not be catching it

and to be fair, other portions of the article seem really on target to me, “But yoga is not something eastern or western as it is universal in its approach and application.”

another definiton, describes how learning to concentrate, on “love” for example, is fraught with distractions, such as the thought, “I love candy” which understandably leads to feelings of wanting to head to the store

definitely sounds like a distraction ;-) esp if it’s dark chocolate!

yet, if i proceed as planned for each pilgrim, after conquering concentration [3], passing into meditation, and evolving into contemplation, i should realize that “Everything in the universe that love is connected to will come to you. Every feeling of love, every sensation, every thought…” and  ”…everything in the universe is relative to everything else, ultimately your meditation on ‘love’ will connect you to everything”

hmmm, every sensation? what about that candy bar?

yet, how can i argue with this article‘s conclusion? – “It is our birthright and destiny to know this exquisite state first hand and enjoy the Truth, Consciousness, and Bliss that is our eternal true nature.”

maybe i’m just asking to be confused?

maybe i’m just not grasping and grappling with the gap between the lines, creating the synapse needed to snap to the truth

and according to “yinsights” by bernie clark (i’m still working through this, kinda like small bites from a deep rich chocolate) synapses might be a viable concept on more than one plane of being

i’ll do one more search, which right off, i’m hoping will help me nail down a definitive definition of meditation:

“‘concentration, receptive awareness, contemplation, and cultivation’ — constitute the major uses of awareness throughout the world’s great meditative traditions. ‘Meditation techniques are just different paths up the same mountain.’”

this is the stuff of which i like, variety equalling “just different paths”

but wait, what’s this? uh oh, “Unmask meditation poseurs…Thinking…Daydreaming…Repeating affirmations…Praying…”

but wait, there’s more, “Of course, every activity can become a meditation if you do it with awareness or concentration” – that’s it, back to my original feeling

***

Flowers Rising Flowers Ready

thank goodness  ;-)

now i’m getting some definitional confirmation, from a third party source, that experiences like that of jogging, in “cross country,” and of loving, in “heart beats,” did cross into an awareness worthy of being meditations

so, it seems, this is an article willing to take loose straws, and, making the effort, weaves those thin strands of inquiry, those crinkly threads of thought, into a quality rope to hang onto -

can i really ask for much more? or just let it lay…

if i want to truly answer the question, for myself: “meditation, am i doing it yet?”…

i suppose i should ;-)

bottomline, i should ask, “so, what do i think? what can i honestly say or convey to anyone about what i now think about meditation?”

it may well be that the mind is a terrible task master of illusion, but it’s along for the ride, and wants its fair share of input and realization…so…

honestly, i’m gonna have to think about that…

…and contemplate a taste of truth….

[1] i want to emphasis that these are my own conclusions of what was presented in class, and my enjoyment and agreement with these thoughts may well be because it aligns so closely with what i’ve thought for many a year anyway ;-) but i’ve tried to present what seemed to me the clarity of how lex presented these ideas

[2] mysticism is something i not only can accept, but can revel in, but i tend to like to know that’s what i’m doing: whether in imagining / being in a state of consciousness, painting with pigments, playing with poetry, or just sitting absorbing the view of tiny birds hopping grazing on the lawn beyond me

definitions are statements of definition-like descriptions, well, i tend to take them apart to see if they fit me, or i can fit into them

[3] is the term ”conquering” anti-yogic? hmm, what with warrior poses, and, supposedly, from what i’ve heard, martial arts is a split of from whatever it was yoga and martial arts once were, as one, my vote is no, definitely not anti-yogic

i think i’m digging a larger hole than i need for my bulbs ;-) but, do i even get a “vote?” -

well, in this culture, where i’m rooted, yes…

regardless of lineages; that’s one of the double -edged experiences of a democracy: a ruling dictate, from whomever, won’t do; so barring a revelation or re-assessment that changes my mind, i get a vote, applied for me by me

Rowing Past the Walking Bridge

Rowing Past the Walking Bridge

Part 1

isn’t that what most of us wonder? are we even meditating? or just fooling ourselves? shouldn’t i be levitating or at least seeing colors?  ;-)

my position is, all of us meditate and have meditated, and not even known it

last week, i posted a short poem, “cross country,” i wrote about 17 years ago

it’s really about any type of running or jogging – it’s really about one of those moments one finds oneself in sometimes – being in the flow or groove – it’s really about words connecting to images connecting to feelings connecting… to inexpressibles

it’s really about meditation – a way of being present

a zone

and now it’s all being blurred in a blog! ;-)

so first, let’s define, or at least create a working definition of meditation – i won’t claim it’s the last or best or only word, just what works for me, right now [1]

when i was a child, i’d overhear the priest and others in church speaking of meditation, and it was obvious this was grown-folk stuff, so that was the end of it; though i did, in passing, imagine it involved some of that great smelling incense that began and ended each mass

my idea of meditation has changed, several times, since then, and i’ve begun to suspect my current “adult informed” idea of meditation, may end up as much a brain-smile memory as that from my childhood

the younger teen years didn’t fare much better in imagining meditation in action than my earlier imaginings

hormone-flexed thoughts gave rise to vistas of carpet-riding swamis gliding ever upward, through soft puffy clouds, girding my teen-hero-resolve as i rose  ;-)

and 20-something just elaborated everything into a non-hangover nirvana, a somehow-resting-point winner’s-purgatory, as i awaited entry into the still-not-quite -fully-visualized heaven that all the spiritual gurus ancient saints and perfect pets surely gloried in…

it was near this time, the early 70′s, my early 20′s, that the press of authoritarian mantras, sutras, and obediences finally took their toll, and i left attempting attaining meditative nirvana, and left for jogging and raising kids, left to educate myself -

- never realizing, til recently, i’d actually, finally, slipped into a type of serial meditation, a series of being-presents…

i hadn’t even begun to realize that my teen-decade of construction work each summer, rhythmically working a hatchet into wood with nails, day after day, for summers, for years, breathing mornings noons and evenings into patterns of twists and cuts and slams of my hammer-like-hatchet, had already entered me, led me, into a blending movement of the moment

i’d even less, suspected my heart-felt-fusings of breath and trumpet and papered notes, dotting my school band years, were equally meshing a mind and heart and body, mine

***

Flowers Rising Flowers Ready

Flowers Rising Flowers Ready

in other words, i’d never realized, or been told, or suggested to, that i was already practicing meditation…was already, being present…

so, to return to point, or more so, make it, the definition of meditation, for me, must, include the capacity to fit many modes of movement and many mines of mindfulness – it must include what i now know it includes: everyday life…

so why wasn’t i transported my-trumpets-blazing into heaven?

i was practically a walking meditation bottle, free for the sipping, always dipping into modes and moments of obvious present-ness, when alone…

the crux, the bottomline, it seems, is, becoming self-conscious, and remaining present…anytime….

Asanas (poses) “do i have to do the pose this way?” part 1: no…

Asanas (poses) “do i have to do the pose this way?” part 2: no, but…

***

Part 2

the opinions and ideas that follow are meant as general suggestions; each person should check or have checked with their medical professional regarding the suitability of their own practice of any posture or asana

part 1 is my attempt to say that each of us are unique, and that general pose guidelines are just that, guidelines

asanas are not a drill team exercise, not a machine, and should not emulate the sensation of mass production

but…

as the old saying goes, we’re all different, yes, but we each can only jump so high in general, can only be so tall or so short within a range, and must breathe and eat within a certain time frame

ie, there are limitations as to how “free” we can be with our bodies

my own perspective for these guidelines, til proven otherwise, is to follow the type of guidelines generally used for safe and effective exercise; for me, those guidelines are informed by my studies with AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) and also reinforced by my studies with Zumba, SilverSneakers, and most yoga teachers

i have no doubt studies from other national fitness certifiying organizations, such as ACE or ACSM, are equally valid, but since i haven’t studied through them, i don’t feel qualified to refer to them

AFAA has developed what they call the 5 Questions regarding any exercise; safe and effective are two of the question components

safe and effective are used by almost every fitness program i’ve come across so far

SilverSneakers has frequent referencs to ROM (range of motion) and countless other movement and condition factors, such as how to determine “your” proper resistance for resistance tubing

Zumba‘s instructor workshops likewise, while encouraging “feeling” those suave latin side to side beat moves, reminds that feet and knees should remain aligned on those twist outs

and prominent yoga instructors, like in this interview on the yoga lunchbox, say, “asana is individually adapted to the individual body so that the energy body aligns properly and the prana flows…I help create a condition where a student can experience prana in a safe, open, and exploratory environment.”

***

the question then isn’t if there are useful guidelines a person practicing a pose should consider; it’s what is it that should be considered?

my trusty response comes up with two potential answers a person considering yoga might review

one, as per most fitness theory, barring being hooked up to a wireless heart- and/or other body activity monitor with large flat screen at the ready, or stopping the routine and thus getting a false reading, is the value of RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion)

RPE is determined, as per this site, “by paying attention to your overall effort, fatigue, and breathing during exercise…” -

sound familiar yoga fans?

there does appear to be a commonality among fitness activities, and a google search of RPE seems to begin to confirm that notion

a disadvantage of RPE is you the practitioner must become actively involved in the monitoring and evaluation of your rate of perceived exertion

an advantage of RPE is you the practitioner must become actively involved in the monitoring and evaluation of your rate of perceived exertion

yes, self awareness cuts both ways  ;-)  like any freedom

continued conscientious effort seems to definitely have made doing my own RPE easier; it’s a mandated cue for instructors in a SilverSneakers class

Meow...Leo doing the "Couch Potato"

Meow...Leo doing the "Couch Potato"

so, for example, i have mild scoliosis -

and while extending my stay in a seated twist pose that feels good to me, i begin lifting straightening rising in spirit and body as i inhale, eyes brightening -

then, twisting lightly firmly gently as i exhale keeping head and neck and spine aligned -

again, releasing lightly and rising lifting on a new inhale -

once again, twisting turning uhk…exhale; time to release some of the tension and sit through a few inhales and exhales, actually as many as i need, and see if i can resume, or slowly unravel…

it’s my responsibility to hone my RPE, it’s my responsibility to practice consistently developing sensitivity strength and confidence in my practice (“a practice” is the in-yoga way of saying “doing something you like consistently and conscientiously” – nice huh?)

it is also my responsibility to say to a teacher if a particularly helpful re-arrangement of my body parts just ain’t workin

two, find a teacher, or companion, you trust, and, who in turn, trusts and respects you

though suggestion # 1 was way longer being made than # 2, it may be the other way around in how it happens, that’s ok

ideally, these two components will merge

bottomline, the question for a yoga fan may eventually be, do i need to go my way?

***

in a comment to a great running thread on the yoga lunchbox, i wrote:

“hopefully, from my pov, once a student has absorbed the discipline and consistency of being in a class, that person will find the ways to blend those competing needs of needing more instruction, needing to explore alone, and needing companionship, without feeling it’s an either/or choice.”

so, maybe the question is, should there by a new RPE for yoga?

like, “Range of Pose Explored, Yoga“ or would that be, RPEy ;-)

Part 1

Pose of Spring First Blooms

i’ve a long-standing opinion regarding asanas, some will agree with it, some people won’t, which kinda proves my point about poses: though generally similar, the same name pose is uniquely different for each individual

my point isn’t regarding alignment, which should be as correct as possible for each person

nor the value of gentle safe pressing of range of motion, with “gentle safe” also defined by each person

my point is actually a pitchfork: two points ;-)

one point is closer to the answer lex gillan

my recent yoga immersion teacher, gave to the question, “how many asanas are there in the world?”  the answer of course is, how many people are there in the world?

lex also pointed out that most of the really eye grabbing circus-gymnast-quality poses we see on magazine covers, are only doable by one in a million people – of which i almost asked “that many?” ;-)

now this is a guy who’s been active with name-brand gurus and self-practice for decades, since the 70′s!  he’s older than me! and incredibly limber and active, so i’ll give his opinion a strong nod

i get an even stronger confirmation when viewing a short 18 minute interview done with Iyengar – it’s a DVD extra on the dvd “Enlighten Up!” i got from netflix

if you haven’t seen this short gem, rent borrow or imagine it, cause it’s good and important!  the abridged interview in the documentary is also good, but not nearly with the impact of the full 18 minute “extra”

my second point is probably easier to say via a recent comment i left on a site i like in new zealand, the yoga lunchbox

“i woke thinking about if i’d really seen your little one doing a natural cobra [on a video posted on her site], and remembering how i’ve felt for a long time now, that all the asanas are resident and ready in our bodies when we are born (as potential) ; that yoga may be 5 or 6 thousand years old, but the imprints in our own bodies, 5-6000 yrs later, pre-date anything ever written and passed down…

“i imagined a non-tv watching no-phone non-guru person in india, sitting, watching a gaggle of playing children, maybe ages 6 mths to 3-4 years, all stretching and running and bent over and crawling, and, laying prone, their hands flat to the floor by their sides, heads lightly raised to peek out at a playmate or parent, smiling, their hearts out to the world ;-)

“someone got it mixed up, this was not originally the ‘cobra’ – shoulda been the “playful child”  ;-)  ”

Leo doing the "couch potato"

Meow...Leo doing the "Couch Potato"

bottomline, for me: asanas are inherent and evolved from our very being, our DNA

right above the bottomline: names given to natural postures we get ourselves into, or find ourselves in, are grounded in the times of the observer

will we see wireless-centric names pop up for popular poses?

the nano-half-twist?

though i guess upside down dog is here to stay   ;-)   cat stretch anyone?
