Not a War Film, But an End of War Film

The Dilemma

War, after at least five thousand years of organized warfare among nations of people, is no longer necessary.

Perpetrated? Yes.

But necessary to secure food or water or access to health and life saving technology?

No.

Chris Kyle does what the film clearly and from the beginning demonstrates: aims to find ways to protect the sheep from wolves. The innocent from predators.

To help.

But even he eventually realizes there is no winner in the war in the film.

There is no will to win, to end war.

It is endless.

His dilemma was to find another way to help.

The irony of course is, he was killed at home on American soil by a worse victim than himself was of that same endless war.

The endless war is not the Iraq War, the Vietnam War, the Korean War, World War II or I. It’s not the wars Germany and France fought for centuries. Or any other country has fought over any given time.

The endless war was a war for survival against scarcity.

Scarcity is no longer a reality.

The war is now against our own perceptions.

*

Still, Yes, Chris Kyle was an American Hero

Why?

Because he was willing to believe he did what he did in the best interest of his family, his friends, and his country.

And if we were fighting door to door in Chicago or Houston or Dallas or New York or any other location big or small in this country, we would want him to be there, beside us, helping protect us.

And he would want to. And he would.

He was also willing and able to listen to an alternative to ways to help.

And died implementing and living that alternative.

That, is an American Hero.

*

Clint Eastwood

Consistent. True. Believable.

I don’t think I can say any more than that.

*

Conclusion

I had, as I wrote my first thriller, “One Night in the Hill Country” – already decided I would speak the ambiguities within myself in my fiction. I believe, based on the responses in my reviews I’ve begun to accomplish that.

My intention, in regard to films like An American Sniper, is to continue to do films like it proud, within whatever my small scope in life is.

And demonstrate it via fiction.

Because within each life, sometimes that’s as big as it ever needs to get.

Just My Opinion, Well, and my Wife’s :-)

Intro

I haven’t written a movie review in quite a few years, maybe ten or so.

And I wasn’t intending to, but yesterday my wife Sheila and I decided, despite very mixed reviews, to go see Clint Eastwood’s new movie, “Jersey Boys.”

We expected, at the very least, a good movie, entertaining, with old familiar music via those surround sound systems movie theaters have for big space / war / car chase and other such movies.

Well, there’s some kind of big divide going on (some say it’s political, some say aesthetic), but either way, we were not only thoroughly entertained, but moved to tears, smiles, and re-immersion into a lively coming of age time of our lives.

*

Story Telling

Sure, the music as fantastic, probably better than we’d even vaguely remembered. Hearing those old songs in an enclosed theatre with the type of speakers they have now, wow!

And yes, the acting was convincing and attention keeping. Three of the four Four Seasons characters are from the original Broadway or touring company productions.

But what make this movie different from a pure music entertainment (closer to what the play is, and would be great fun to see/hear) is the story. Sheila says she saw that Frankie Valli was one of the producers, and I can’t help feel there was a very close connection between 80 year old Valli and 84 year old Eastwood about what matters.

Love, family, desire, heart break, rejections, success (esp sudden success), danger, and re-conciliations.

The fact is, realizing how and what these young men lived through, to get to the lyrics and sound of many of their songs, then hearing the song, from the actor playing Valli, touches so deep, that wells of emotion can’t help but come up.

Other Reviews and Links of Interest

Below is both a pro and con review of the film. The comment thread for the con review is particularly interesting I think, as almost everyone disagrees with what the guys says. Both are worth reading though.

Also I’ve included a link to an interview with John Lloyd Young, who played Frankie Valli on stage and in the film.

Plus a link to info on the producers, which does show that Valli was involved with the film.

Conclusion

Storytelling, especially when it’s about life, is at its best.

More so when mixed with the sounds and songs that emerged from life, then brought together by decades of perspective from someone like Clint Eastwood.

Totally recommend.

it was time!

art hop had skipped onto the calendar

the day was cool yet warmly greeted us, we were off –

Sheila at Lake Champlain inlet near Art Hop 2011

to be at art hop

to have it occupy us

as we’d inhabit

stalls and walls of art, booths of food and

music wafting from way down somewhere

art hop 1a

yet unseen

there, down a ways

there,

across the street with cars and merging

art hop 1b

stars

there

along old tracks

run by trains no longer hauling

art hop 1c

there

in chairs outside

the boxcars now gone

musicians laid new tracks of oldies drinking in

the growing darkness of night’s

art hop 1drestive still-quiet crowds

spaces opened light into the glowing

night

then

sounds of set ups

Fun Music Group

amps and wattage

waiting

had

strung blank

canvases of light

contrasts, friends of night

art hop 1gcalling those inside –

pawn your indoor sleep!

and

shadow-glows burst

into drums and horns and flaring

art hop 1f

wails with secret smiles we see in real time – timing our hearts

snaring drumming dreams

art hop 1h

it followed us and we followed too…
