Aerobic Dance

Listening

to my body

anew

each time i start class

I start again

new

in spirit.

Lazy soft first

moves

meant to test

the day’s range -

listening to my body…

Tiny tap touches

on the beat

of

my extensions.

The melody

carries

the momentum,

the down beat

sets the limits

as i listen

to my body’s

waking dancing walk.

Repeat rhythms

release

the growing range of motions

the flowing stages of emotions

yes

the glistening body was also listening.

Aerobic dance in class

is

a conversation

of celebration between all that’s beautiful

in you.

Ballerina

Gentle strength -

a blessing

set in motion;

mind and feeling

spirited

onto moving flesh.

Nimble and sure…

placing our hearts

quietly

on tiptoe,

cradling our breath

on the tip of a wing.

Dancer

Thump, thump. Sound.

The expression of the heart.

Movement.

The expressing of the voice

singing in our souls.

Stretch and coil. Expansion -

retraction. The dancer mirrors

the explosion-implosion of the universe.

Before thought

but giving rise to reason -

before sound

but vibrating the world

into the motions of awareness -

the dance of Life

made passions stir, opening

the ready eyes of its dancers:

you and me and all of us

upon this vast

dance floor of God’s called Earth.

Dancing

It’s more than the movement

or the easy-sharp swaying

to a beat pounded out right.

It’s more the allowing – a letting -

into one’s skin and muscles

the very vibration of aliveness itself.

It’s a translating of the heartfelt

into the mind-known.

Turning feeling

into conception, vision into perception.

It’s the joining of that

that is perceived into consciousness.

One becomes alive

in time.

And time takes you-makes you

its minute hand

dancing you round

the hourglass of life.

Dancing Is…

Dancing

is an art…

Dancing is a sport.

Dancing’s a way of life

expressing

what words imply -

what images

suggest

stirring

the heart

within

memories

of our movements.

The art is the letting -

the sport is the getting -

that we are space

we are time

we are…

dance.

passion

of flowers reaching the sun

the shot of birds through the air

the smile of an infant seeing your eyes

soft as the first green buds

in early light

strong as the river releasing a winter’s snow

pausing and starting and flowing

return

of freshness

and always the pull felt

among all the planets and all of

the stars

connected

dancing the passion of space

Little Dancer

Your tiny dancing movements are

the most innocent of all.

They are the first fun steps created

both for you and your loved ones.

Everyone is watching you

with open eyes and

an open heart.

So enjoy.

Raise your rounded arms.

Sway and move your little feet.

Clap and move and keep on smiling.

For life is smiling through you.

And we can’t but smile back

remembering.

my thoughts

steadied by my heart’s

The Quiet Dance

inside

when the music and the dancers talking

all around us wave and wind their way among

the beats and sounds and melodies

making life fuller…

when that music

penetrates

Walking to ACL in Our 60s

© Felipe Adan Lerma

My wife and I knew we weren’t going inside the Austin City Limits’ fenced concert area.

We just wanted to soak in some atmosphere and see what memories might float up.

It was the first of two weekends for ACL, and the weather was one of those days so rare in Austin, just being outside created a memory. The heat and humidity and dangerously high dew points of the last several months had taken a break, not to return for another few days.

It may seem strange, my first image I’ve chosen is of Austin’s iconic Barton Creek, rather than clusters of headband attired teens, pedicabs, and plenty of police -

But from this view (looking north from Barton Springs Road Bridge) – in the midst of all this nature, the pedestrian bridge spanning the water, and a look of where Barton Creek enters Lady Bird Lake – to one’s left, beyond the trees, is where the masses of tents and stages and music are clustered.

And if one didn’t know that, the sound from the nearest stages, held in the crisp relatively dry clear air, is unmistakable. And enticing.

From my wife and I’s own prior experience, the folks in the canoes in the lower portion of the image must have felt like they were in nature-music-heaven.

On the lower right, the columns of shadow extending into the sunlight foliage are folk like us, on the bridge. Very nice indeed. (smiles)

Almost immediately past the bridge, the street is blocked to regular vehicular traffic, with a single middle lane for event and emergency vehicles. The small crowd would swell considerably by evening, but Sheila and I knew we’d probably already be heading back.

We’ve had our share of night time concerts, including the Rolling Stones in 2006 (also at Zilker Park, also a clear October day) and Huey Lewis and the News (also at Zilker) 1989 4th of July concert.

This time around, hoping for ambiance, we wouldn’t be disappointed.

Intro

Last night Sheila’s brother, Kerry, once again took and guided us into, through, and back out of Art Hop :-)

I’ve tried to provide a sampling of what art events used to be like in both Houston and Austin, accessible, approachable, and lots of fun. Though, gotta admit, SXSW is still a lot of fun, most the time (smiles).

Right in the midst of Art Hop, along Pine Street is a tiny street with places like Myer’s Bagels and, seen above, Speaking Volumes. We loved going there when we were here a couple of years ago, and were thrilled to see this area again. It’s literally a few feet from the Barge Canal and Lake Champlain.

I’ve a YouTube video I took 2011 of the inlet.

One of my favorite parts of Art Hop each time has been Sambatucada. Percussions and fun galore :-)

They’re fabulous just listening and jamming to them, but when they burst out marching into the crowd, wow! A video I took back at Art Hop 2011 is available on YouTube. It begins with my art at one of the installations, and progresses into the crowds at Art Hop.

And Sambatucada itself has a nice YouTube video.

Across the street, manned with male and female traffic guards with glow-batons to direct people and cars, situated my the Maltex Building (which is packed with several large floors of art work) is the Vermont Jazz Ensemble.

My YouTube video from 2011 also has some footage of them playing.

Totally different spectrum of energy from Sambatucada. Yet just as enjoyable and refreshing.

From here, we wandered onto several cordoned areas of music and movement.

One was a Kate Bush installation.

She has a nice You Tube video also.

Well, this enticed both my wife and I to join in :-)

Sheila’s brother, Kerry, did a nice patient job of trying to capture the moment.

I’m not familiar with the job putting this on, ArtsRiot, but they seemed to have a really nice group of fun stuff to do, all grouped close together.

This particular music-art-dance was labeled the Kate Bush Wuthering Heights Dance Marathon.

Other than stopping for me to buy and eat an organic peach-cheddar-cheese wheat bread, we headed back home, getting to see one of the metal works installation lit for night time.

It was beside the Conant Metal and Light building.

Continuing back home (we walked!) we came across several homes that, at night, lit up, turned into fabulous art places to stop by. Here, Sheila and Kerry are back on the sidewalk waiting for me as I took yet another picture :-)

All in all, a great time.

The next night, Sheila and I returned for Art Hop’s fashion show, Strut.

I’m not sure what images I can use for a post, but I may end up just doing a short piece with some links. I’ll have to see. :-)

Just My Opinion, Well, and my Wife’s :-)

Intro

I haven’t written a movie review in quite a few years, maybe ten or so.

And I wasn’t intending to, but yesterday my wife Sheila and I decided, despite very mixed reviews, to go see Clint Eastwood’s new movie, “Jersey Boys.”

We expected, at the very least, a good movie, entertaining, with old familiar music via those surround sound systems movie theaters have for big space / war / car chase and other such movies.

Well, there’s some kind of big divide going on (some say it’s political, some say aesthetic), but either way, we were not only thoroughly entertained, but moved to tears, smiles, and re-immersion into a lively coming of age time of our lives.

*

Story Telling

Sure, the music as fantastic, probably better than we’d even vaguely remembered. Hearing those old songs in an enclosed theatre with the type of speakers they have now, wow!

And yes, the acting was convincing and attention keeping. Three of the four Four Seasons characters are from the original Broadway or touring company productions.

But what make this movie different from a pure music entertainment (closer to what the play is, and would be great fun to see/hear) is the story. Sheila says she saw that Frankie Valli was one of the producers, and I can’t help feel there was a very close connection between 80 year old Valli and 84 year old Eastwood about what matters.

Love, family, desire, heart break, rejections, success (esp sudden success), danger, and re-conciliations.

The fact is, realizing how and what these young men lived through, to get to the lyrics and sound of many of their songs, then hearing the song, from the actor playing Valli, touches so deep, that wells of emotion can’t help but come up.

*

Other Reviews and Links of Interest

Below is both a pro and con review of the film. The comment thread for the con review is particularly interesting I think, as almost everyone disagrees with what the guys says. Both are worth reading though.

Also I’ve included a link to an interview with John Lloyd Young, who played Frankie Valli on stage and in the film.

Plus a link to info on the producers, which does show that Valli was involved with the film.

Con : http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jay-weston/clint-eastwoods-jersey-bo_b_5519633.html

*

Conclusion

Storytelling, especially when it’s about life, is at its best.

More so when mixed with the sounds and songs that emerged from life, then brought together by decades of perspective from someone like Clint Eastwood.

Totally recommend.

New Short Story Set in Austin:

“The Children (Shorts) The Concert”

**

***

First Prequel in “The Children” series

this is an extra fun thing i’ve come across to do, write short stories to go with my novels

the key for me at this time is to tie in the stories to existing or upcoming novels

since most of my new fictional work features the extended family first introduced in my novel, “the children,” it felt right to do some short stories that presented background of interest about the characters

“the children” itself is a series of novels, with a second novel nearly 2/3’s written, and a third in the outline stage

“the children (shorts)” will be a series of short stories with the same cast of young characters

this first short, “the concert” is set in austin, and is a fun quick read

i hope you’ll try it and enjoy ;-)

***

Traveling, Paris, Austin, Vermont, Galveston, Houston and Interactions

one of my main concerns, on returning to austin, after a year and a half both in galveston, then in vermont, followed by over a month in paris, was what, if anything, would be new to me coming back to austin

certainly the only thing that’s changed about the heat and traffic, is they’ve intensified ;-)

what is new though, is having a comparative base

where as i’ve always had somewhat of a true distinction, between growing up in houston, and living in galveston and austin a nearly 18 years each, they were still texas, still hot most the year, and still places i had seen change and grow as i myself got older

ie, they were familiar and similar, even if with very distinct differences i could differentiate, write about, and do different imagery about

but now, with a nice amount of time in vermont, and a lingering touch of time in paris, i have real comparisons within me

it will be interesting, both in my writing and my image work, to see how i position the more endearing aspects of all these locations

this short story, “the concert” lets me bring some of the early excitement of being in austin to light, via the young eyes of the characters in this short ;-)

“creativity & yoga aren’t similar, they are of the same breath”

Intro

i came up with the idea of having a “thoughts” article category, sorta as a way to have an easy way to write about something, and not have to research it so much, ha! – yea, right, l0l !!

i ended up just fooling myself into having to think harder ;-)

i figured, point out a few times i felt i’d gotten creative, maybe point to an article, well, ok, maybe two ;-)

heck, i have at least a painting and a couple of poems that could fill in some color and tone

maybe a photo, and i even have some digital art up now

like a piece of organic low-sugar cake with coconut!

well…

a funny thing happened on the way to the “send” button

i couldn’t think what to say…

what follows, has been “working” since my first saved draft as recorded in my wordpress acct,

” 1 : the quality of being creative

: the ability to create

and further defines “creative,” at least in part 2 of 3, as,

2 : having the quality of something created rather than imitated : imaginative <the creative arts>

and while the further definition of “create” is similar, i thought the info on the “origin of create” further down the page, was particularly interesting :

“Middle English, from Latin creatus, past participle of creare; akin to Latin crescere to grow…

First Known Use: 14th century”

*

Implications

“akin to Latin crescere to grow…”

“something created rather than imitated”

“being creative…the ability to create”

there’s much here, it seems to me, with huge implications -

it’s obvious that our current state of being in bodies, is a result of a creative effort, growing something new that’s not merely an imitation

so how’s that fit in with an unchanging soul, immutable and at one with the universe?

not easily it seems ;-)

yet, the paradox of duality may be more an answer than just a perplexing condition of our lives

*

Assumptions and Beliefs

i accept that there is oneness in the universe, unchanging, at least from our perspective

yet that oneness allows or wants or initiates diverse creations of changing living and inorganic objects

is it infusing the more-dense less-aware parts of itself it knows it will never lose, with more awareness of itself, as we are all contained within it?

a larger macro of what we attempt to do in breathing and awareness during asanas or other, more off the mat movements?

is it simply what we would perceive as breathing, naturally pulsing with its own life, and we are an expression of that oneness?

maybe some combinations of that and much more?

*

i don’t believe it’s possible to know the answers fully, or in a way of thinking or feeling we know all there is – we have to rely and be satisfied, at some point, with faith with what we do think and feel, and thus with what we assume we know…

are the words yoga or art or music or religion or god the things themselves?

maybe parts of that which they are themselves, being signifiers

being details, parts of the whole of what they point to

so, in that respect, i’ve come to believe :

“creativity & yoga aren’t similar, they are of the same breath”

so far, my reasoning, which is an expression of both my feelings and my thoughts, is not only simplistic, but riddled with assumptions and a priori starting points, any of which could be wrong or the views of someone who, if not touching one isolated part of the proverbial huge elephant, is maybe touching one tiny portion of a huge global canvas or sculpture ;-)

but so it must be…

i have to function, i have to live, and i have to go by what i know, right now…

*

Mind, Heart, and Intuition – Yoga & Creativity

the gentleman i first learned about meditation from, known as william david before reclaiming his birth name, way back in the early 70s at the esoteric philosophy center in houston’s montrose area (then a hotbed of new age stuff)

he pointed out to me a few things, as i was free-thinking out load about an image,

“that’s your intuition”

“but all i’m doing is thinking…”

“the faster your thoughts, the more they bundle themselves into intuitions”

“i don’t get it, i was just putting ideas together…”

“when you slow down, they are thoughts, ideas…when you leap and jump, they’re intuitions – and when they are tied to your heart, they’re your truths”

i’ve never needed to go past that yet, just understand it within myself better

yoga, creativity, the arts, fitness, life!

they’re like thoughts and intuitions and heart-felt feelings – all of a kind…

*

Creativity and Awareness

as i mentioned in my article, “Creativity & Awareness, a Conscious Response to Adaptation in Fitness & Yoga,” i feel creativity is kin with awareness, maybe a conjoined twin in essence -

awareness of…

* the rustle of air filtering past leaves and limbs and hair and eyes

* the now-you-see-it-now-you don’t stars of winking light

* the first smiles of an infant who knows you’re near

* a hand touch when you’re in thought, by someone who thought of you

* an eye blink from star to stars and twinkles in your eye

* words that aren’t the thing but bring them wrapped in language to your heart

* sounds with pictures pulsing in them

* being alone in a mass of others and feeling joined

* knowing each moment would have to be said thought felt but can’t, not yet…

maybe awareness and creativity are similar to the continuum expressed above, between reasoning and individual thoughts, with intuition

it seems, at times, there’s too mad a rush to condemn the mind and thoughts, and yet rush as madly to express, whole-heartedly, that all is one

that appeals to me as little as the scientific-like person who disparages the values of emotion and the heart

neither extreme of being seems to reflect the notion of being more holistic within oneself

so, for now, i’ll continue to value both my mind and my heart, with awareness the mediator and messenger to creativity…

and maybe messaging ;-) between my heart and mind ;-)

The Artist as a Creative Example

Creativity & Awareness in Yoga v3
Creativity & Awareness in Yoga v3, Original Digital Art, Adan Lerma

Intro, Kindred Spirits

artists, of all stripes, have always been an odd necessity of humanity

even folk not doing typically thought of activities of art, when they are exceptional, or unique, or certainly odd enough to qualify, as if by default ;-) are thought of as artists :

con-artists, beguilers, shamans, dancers in the infield in baseball, great lovers -

below, knowing i’m not beginning to scratch the surface of the artistic talent to choose among, i’ve listed a few of those i’m currently or recently been following, that in the near term, have struck an artistic chord in me, in my integrative efforts

in addition, they tend to be, like me, working both yoga and an art related activity into their mix

so these are currently folks of a kindred spirit for me ;-)

*

Emmanuelle – Plans on a Comet

a young lady in europe (brussels and france) into music and yoga and art and photos and dance and teaching

browse her articles, check back on her, do a google search, she’s got a lot to offer

music and yoga seem to be her favorites right now -

with an inquisitive playful turn of mind

if there’s a comet on the site -

it’s emmanuelle!

*

Brija, StableRoots

a disarmingly charming interestingly tortured soul near the coast of england, who likes to paint and explore yoga as an awareness toward healing and merging more with her art

honest in turns haunting and humorous

there’s a raw point of emergence visible in her words worth watching

should i admit i see some of the-me of long ago in her words?

i guess so ;-)

wordpress provides some convenient “category” codes for bloggers, and brija has notated some of her articles under her “art category”

*

Kara-Leah

based in new zealand, but heard worldwide, i’ve reviewed one of her bio-exploratory-yoga articles on her flagship site, the yoga lunchbox

my byword-feeling for kara-leah, is authenticity

exploring her sites is exploring an authentically articulate voice

it can be unsettling, and it can be inspiring -

she also has a self titled site focussing on her creative writing work

both sites have featured articles where she’s explored how music is entwined with her yoga

kara-leah’s musings about her creative process, also strike me as familiar ;-)

she recently posted a typically good article on the creative process

*

YogaDork

not the typical creative activity most people thing of, like painting or writing or singing -

ms yogadork, as i privately like to call her ;-) works in the creative coal mines of humor ;-)

irreverent and broad in scope, yogadork is a welcome reminder of how silly we can all get about yoga, and all other things human

one of my first ever introductions to this site was very early thing year, to a video spoofing yoga via a production number from the play, “Chicago”

as the article puts it, ” If choreographed yoga has your nadis in a twist, prepare yourself for the Bob Fosse-fied Broadway Musical! It’s Yoga Tango! All jazz hands and breathy ujjayi to the tune ofChicago‘s “Cell Block Tango.”

and still one of my favorite ever!

if you crave a little humor with your yoga once in awhile, then check these guys out ;-)

*

Miranda, Studio Mothers

a creative website i’ve only recently come across, miranda is currently in the midst of a project of creating a work of art every day for the month (aedm)

her project for day 5, about herself as a young girl and her father, is exceptionally touching

her site focusses on helping busy mothers be the creative selves they want to be

though of course anyone, including us guys, are welcome ;-)

into painting and collages and more, miranda adds, “And breathing. Breathing is good.”

if you know some of my yoga writings, you know i very much go along with the belief that breathing is fundamental, including creatively

miranda’s site seems a great place to check out if you’re a busy mom – or anyone else ;-)

*

Himalayan Institute, “Awakening the Artist

the himalayan institute has provided countless exceptionally clear articles on important aspects of living, such as “Aging Gracefully” -

“Awakening the Artist” follows in that strong tradition

written by karen macklin, who writes, “Artistic expression can be deeply fulfilling, but accessing creativity isn’t always easy” -

with an article subtitle that reads, “Tap into higher inspiration and refine your artistic skills with yogic tools and teachings that empower creative expression”

i gotta agree! mostly ;-)

the need for concentration, and how to develop it if needed, are discussed

as are the needs for “stillness and presence” and awareness and inspiration, breath and discipline, dealing with distracting negative emotions, “to feel free to have joy again in their performances” -

-  Quibbles  -

and yet, as a practicing artist, i’ll have to quibble ;-)

the author, quoting respected yoga teachers :

1) yes, maybe, at first, “The task of the yogic artist is mostly just to get out of the way” -

yet, i believe, eventually, the more fulfilling task is to be in and of “the way”

2) and yes, optimally, “Word, color, or movement choices don’t come from practical considerations—they come from intuition and a deeper place of seeing”

and again, the true solution, for me (an on-going process) is not to disdain practical considerations, but to merge them with intuitive processes (easier said than done)

but don’t think the author is for having the creative person put themselves in a cave, away from others, rejecting recognition

““If you want to really change the world with your work, you may have to make a spectacle with it, and that can be very beautiful. It may be your dharma to be really out there”

-  Bottomline  -

even with my quibbles, if i need to return to roots and re-ground, which happens ;-) then i do need to “get out of the way” and “come from intuition”

so with this, i recommend “awakening the artist” whole-heartedly ;-)

Susan Maier-Moul, The Magazine of Yoga

i’ve left the magazine of yoga, “an online journal which promotes engaged everyday life as the key principle of freedom” for last -

they have been my first and best lasting stand-by for all things articulated about yoga -

susan the editor-in-chief presents a smorgasbord of ingredients that satisfies, nourishes, and leaves me eager for more (after digesting my current portion of course)

it’s hard to further articulate the vastness of appealing work on the magazine of yoga

i recommend you go to the main page, and cruise down the right side of the page

topic categories with numerous links within each group currently include:

Yoga-Adan, What About Me?

i have lots of plans up ahead

my texas to vermont series usually still has a good bead on short, medium, and long-term projects

in my first texas to vermont post, “preparations,” i needed to prepare for, and accomplish, my wife sheila and mine’s move from to vermont from texas

right now is similar – though my move this time, is from the state of having decade’s of creative content t0 share, from earlier this year back through the last 40 years -

writings, poems, photos, paintings -

much…

and now move, kicking and screaming, but with eagerness! to a new state of available sharing, courtesy of the new digital age of opportunities

so, like that time period earlier this year, i will continue my site, posting each week, but again, as back then in that may-june period of moving, post more of my creative work (poems, images) and less time-necessary “thought” work ;-)

“101 Sports Poems” – a Series

the move in-progress right at this moment, specifically, is that of organizing, formating, and presenting, a collection of mini sports poem volumes, comprising 101 original works

this is an important and major move for me

i’ve already presented two ebooks, one representing a sampler of mostly written work, the other an over-view presentation of visual work

now, i return to words, but specifically poetry, and even more to the point, sports poems

sports have been important to me most my life

sports now blends with yoga and thought

it’s an interesting project ;-)

what i also intend to do, as part of my creative postings, these next necessary number of weeks, is create poetry speaking directly to my interest in yoga in fitness and the arts -

the work i will be preparing for epublication is sports related in poetry form, gently infused with yoga and fitness

the work i’ll prepare and create for postings on my site will be, to start : yoga related to the arts

it’s be a busy creative time, just in time for the holidays ;-)

“creativity & yoga aren’t similar, they are of the same breath”

Intro

i came up with the idea of having a “thoughts” article category, sorta as a way to have an easy way to write about something, and not have to research it so much, ha! – yea, right, l0l !!

i ended up just fooling myself into having to think harder ;-)

*

Creativity & Awareness in Yoga v1

Creativity & Awareness in Yoga v1, Original Digital Art, Adan Lerma

*

i figured, point out a few times i felt i’d gotten creative, maybe point to an article, well, ok, maybe two ;-)

heck, i have at least a painting and a couple of poems that could fill in some color and tone

maybe a photo, and i even have some digital art up now

like a piece of organic low-sugar cake with coconut!

well…

a funny thing happened on the way to the “send” button

i couldn’t think what to say…

what follows, has been “working” since my first saved draft as recorded in my wordpress acct,

“12 August, 2011 @ 9:02 by yoga-adan”

A Thread

ok, so what is creativity?

Creativity & Awareness in Yoga v2

Creativity & Awareness in Yoga v2, Original Digital Art, Adan Lerma

obviously i can point to examples, my own and others, of creative efforts, whether pleasing or not ;-)

merriam-websters says creativity is,

Mind, Heart, and Intuition – Yoga & Creativity

* knowing each moment would have to be said thought felt but can’t, not yet…

maybe awareness and creativity are similar to the continuum expressed above, between reasoning and individual thoughts, with intuition

the work i’ll prepare and create for postings on my site will be, to start : yoga related to the arts

it’s be a busy creative time, just in time for the holidays ;-)

From the Beginning

zumba video submission

from the beginning of beginning yoga-adan, i’ve been intent on integrating my life long interests – art, dance, music, poetry, writing, fitness, spiritual and ethical issues, and of course relationships

i know, some people, quite earnestly and of fullest integrity research and motive, don’t believe that the “secrets” of life can be found in relationships, only within oneself

i disagree -

though the oneness within oneself and its tie to whatever it is god is, and the oneness with another and that tie to god is, may differ, i’ve never shook the feeling they are much more similar than different ;-)

art, dance, music, poetry, writing, fitness, plus spiritual and ethical issues offer, i believe, simultaneous lines within oneself and to others, with both lines straight shots to what it is god is – and i’m still guessing that’s something good ;-)

*

In the Moment

this week marks a discernible shift and, i believe, advance toward, not really a goal, but more like a, reunion -

a re-integration; more than “just” an integration…

my yoga has held firm in beloved long held poses – as has my enduring satisfaction of dance aerobics in jazzercise, zumba, & the occasional going out ;-)

poetry, as my readers know, dates back, in recorded form, to the beginning of the 80’s

playing music’s been an active part of me since my trumpet days in 6th grade, art since 2nd grade (painting with crayons to classical music), and fitness since before i knew that running and jumping and throwing balls and racing bikes along alleys and through trails along the bayous would one day become fitness

yoga, i’ve learned, and come to believe, began before my first breath, as i related in my commentary to my poem, “music”

this week, my musicality begins to become more joined to yoga via my dance

this week, i allow myself to be seen in a video submitted to zumba

this week, i don’t hide my goofiness (i think i’m funny ;-) )

this week, my public dance joins my private yoga -

both in intent, and self promise of approach…

eventually, i don’t know when exactly, i don’t know how exactly – i’ll create a movement with my poses that satisfies some union of the two, yet lets each remain distinct as desired and needed

yoga and movement and movement-yoga can each have their “space” within me

this is something i have full faith in, even without knowing how…

*

External Push

i’d been planning the shoot (angles, costume, choreography) and working the editing (learning to use imovie) for this video submission for about a month, but knew i’d come across an article that’d nail what i felt when it came time to post my video with zumba on facebook

recovering yogi, a fun irreverent yoga site supplied the piece

really one of my favorite articles ever from them -

“confessions of a recovering flowtard”

it’s a first person account by suzanne morrison of her book about her trip to india nearly a decade ago, along with her relationships to her teachers, etc

the book itself has, i believe, an unfortunate title, as many people who’d enjoy the story will assume, as i did, that it was more of the usual blah-blah, probably better depicted in “enlighten up!” on dvd

three previous articles, including an interview, about suzanne and her book, slowly mellowed me out where i at least could enjoy anticipating a possible movie of the book ;-)

but her own first hand account, wow, what naturalness and down to earth vibes, yea, real vibes that run like little refreshing currents off the page -

authenticity and humanity ran plush -

“Within weeks of signing over my life savings for a month-long pass to my new studio, I became addicted to the flow. Flow. You know, the sun salutation on crack…

“So naturally I did it for half a decade longer, until I finished writing Yoga Bitch and got accidentally enlightened…

“I finally broke into the safe room in my brain where I store my ego”

but i still want a movie ;-)

The Video for Zumba®

Intent

i wanted something playful, something fun

it meant exposing my aging self as i am, some easy moving here, a little stiff there ;-)

*

Prep

depending on your view of my video, i either looked prepared or not even close ;-)

i practiced a short while (15-30 min) each day for about two weeks, developing the routine, getting ideas while moving, then getting more and more used to the music changes and inflections

zumba, in their workshops, includes teaching a music awareness based on what you hear and feel, rather than a 32 count sequence – so choreography is taught a bit differently from regular dance aerobics

afaa, for instance, has a great workshop specifically focussed on using the 32 count method

both methods are valid, so despite pros and cons, i don’t see competing formats, but rather, complimentary opportunities

i spent a bit of time making varying hash marks to denote music changes, then went back and noted the time change within the song and the amt of time spent in each segment

from there i could see how many repeating segments i had, plus how many “open-to-interpretation” sections i might use

i “acted out” then wrote down the possible sequences, and from there it was all practice (rehearsal), letting the “doing” tell me how and what to keep and change

it was an exercise in listening to my body, using my  intuition, responding, and trusting…

the rest is, not notorious, but now part of my history, never-the-less ;-)

*

My Personal View of Zumba as an Organization

the song, “pause” was the required song from zumba to do a video for submission

this seems to be a standard way of promoting an event, as they recently did the same thing using a differing song that people could make videos to for submission

tell the truth, i’m kinda looking fwd to the next song ;-) maybe a change of pace? something more melodic and smooth? ;-) how ’bout one of those hot latina ladies currently on the scene!

anyways ;-)

zumba is an interesting organization, having exploded on the scene worldwide in a relatively short time – understandable, with the music and moves and latin party scene feel

but my wife and i took the workshops and trainings for another very important reason – for us

there’s an encouragement and allowance for anyone desiring to teach, to learn a basic level of skill, and from there, begin…

the learning’s not expected to stop; afaa or other fitness certification is encouraged, and several national fitness associations, like afaa, offer a substantional discount on workshops if a person is a zin member of zumba

in addition, each person is encouraged to find their own “flavor” that makes the music and movement work for them

this is huge!

it is not simply an item of enticement, it’s a major component of what i feel zumba is as an organization :

immense individuality within a large framework to work within

almost sounds yogic ;-)

*

Personal Issues

i had a strong sense of embarrassment and shyness to overcome, and sheila helped tremendously with her patient re-shoots, costume suggestions, and (of course) comb-overs ;-)

staring at one’s aged self move to music can be a sobering experience, and this wasn’t close to being an exception…

but i want other seniors and re-conditioning folk to know, i do yoga, i do art, i dance, and i smile (even if goofily)

i didn’t get this way overnight, and i haven’t always been this way – i was nearly 40 lbs heavier only a few years ago, and was so for nearly a decade

the process, for me, of having lost my fitness, and regaining it, was a slow process both ways…

*

Yoga Prep

so i took a deep breath, many deep breaths ;-) and took the digital leap

the video is entitled “senior pause”   [1]  because i wanted to say, upfront, i’m not trying to be 20 years old, or even 40, just me, nearly 61 years old, but still able to move and enjoy movement and music

and quite frankly, though i’ve always been relatively fluid, yoga has definitely made me more relaxed, more able to feel and sense the music and my abilities on any given day

not perfectly so, but much more so…

*

Yoga in the Listening

the song “pause” would not have been my choice without the video requirement -

i lean toward more melodic or pop beat type songs -

but listening to the rhythms and inflections of “pause” with an open concentration, allowing the music to move within me, i gained an appreciation for the nuances, cadences, and humor in the song

this happened more readily via a more focussed awareness i acutely recognized as applied from yoga…

i also happened to catch an interview with the creator of “pause,” pitbull on kathie lee and hoda this summer -

his relaxed humor plus his speaking of cuban immigrants and his gratefulness for the opportunities offered in america, helped me sense the artist & person in the music better  [2]

*

regarding the lyrics, well, ok, the most they might’ve applied to me was many decades ago ;-)

*

Yoga in the Moves

obviously it’s only segments, moments, certain moves, that reminded me directly of yoga, at least as i expressed myself in the video

things like the chest openers (with a slight back bend) -

a moving warrior 2 modification of the lateral ssd’s (single-single-and-a-double’s)

the concept of a pause, for breath and reset

and i have no problem also recognizing a more relaxed breath in my movement, with the benefit of a stronger core  [3]

there’s continuity i believe, in how all peoples around the world celebrate movement

practicing and doing this video only reinforces my belief

This Week’s Follow-Up Blog Posts

this week, rather than posting a poem or other art related piece, then my article, i’ve posted my article first, and now will follow with several related poems, one each day beginning tomorrow, for three days straight

from 1994 :

“Band”

“Drill Team”

“Little Dancer”

the links to the poems should be active once they’re posted

and of course i’ll be yakking my commentary and seeing what’s what ;-)

Final Thoughts

*

bottomline(s) :

i know i don’t need to rush to some sort of “realization” -

once one improves one’s breath, it’s time to just breathe…

i actually want to enjoy the journey…

*

i want to let-happen how dance will merge with yoga…slowly…tip-toe-together, if need be, as it will be -

because that’s how it feels best right now…

it won’t be a flowtard ;-) and it won’t be a dance form with yoga, but more, i sense, yoga in a new dance form, one that fits me…

i’m looking forward to what it’ll be and how it’ll feel ;-)

footnotes

[1]  this link may not work at some point, probably won’t work, as it is to a contest page

i should have a shorter 30 sec spot available on my site at some point, but am not sure at this time for what time frame, as per legitimate restrictions by zumba regarding individual postings of material related to their business

[2]  my own stance on immigration is the laws should be honored and followed

and, like the many laws that change hands back & forth, ie, the amount of taxes each segment of society pays, whether drinking is legal or not, what the meaning of equal means for all races and ethnic groups and sexes -

our country is built on the rule of law applied to the constitution

which, to me, means, if we want to re-interpret the applicability of something in our society, there is a clear channel available to all of us for changing a laws, including the immigration laws

note: the link within the kathi lee & hoda article to the interview with pitbull is: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/29054368/vp/44002890/ but doesn’t seem to work right now

i anticipate posting several of my law related poems from the 90’s later this year

[3]  sheila and i currently (0811) start all our classes with breathing exercises

music – original poetry

sample poem included in poetry collection “Arts Poems

**

written back in the early 90s, “music” is still one of my favorite poems, and fits nicely as a prompt response that still fits for me, to dVersepoets prompt “Poetic ‘OUR Music’” hosted by Stuart McPherson

the wealth of information connection music to other arts is especially interesting, with both a photo and a painting for the visuals, and a poems from anne sexton, whom i’ve always liked reading, that turns your heart

Music

Sound.

Vibration.

It happens so

naturally.  Like

the magic of rain

on a mood.

Cadences.

Rhythms.  Keys.

They all happen, then

are recorded.  Refined.

Solos, duets, quartets, big bands.

All evolving from the first

echo from the mother’s

heart – heard before

even the first

breath…

Music.

this must’ve been one of my pre-conscious-of-being-in-yoga moments…

i’m so engrained to compete with myself to express, in this case the connection of a work of my art to yoga, i almost feel like this is cheating, “almost” ;-)

how can i not connect this poem to yoga?

the breath? music, from the heart?

i’ll be nice to myself ;-)
