live in the moment

if the words endure, they do so because they link the links -

**

dVersepoets Prompt – dVerse Meeting the Bar

hosted by Victoria C. Slotto :

victoria presents one of my most favorite topics, the sense of being in the moment

she begins with a statement i myself feel fully :

“I am not a Buddhist, per se. Aspects of Buddhism, however, have inspired me for many years, in particular, mindfulness meditation….”

then showcases examples of being in the now - snippets of data awash in each of the five senses, followed by a poem by louise hastings illustrating the pull of the seasons in one woman’s now

*

Mindfulness, Heart and Mind

victoria’s excellent intro brought to mind a couple of twangs of my own regarding mindfulness -

one, how often various proponents focus only on the heart and disparage the mind

my own feeling, which i express often here on my site ;-) is that ideally, a blending, almost a respect and compassion, between the two, would be even better

carol horton has one of my favorite articles, regarding right and left brain, which i think equally applies (and which she posted on her site a year to the date tomorrow!)

two, is my idea of how / where creativity takes place; but first, this background material, from victoria :

“the words we commit to paper or hard drive are born in the present moment. In order to create, we need to carve out a place and time of silence. We need to slow down and notice details, to block out distraction, and open up to inspiration. Silence, awareness, focus….”

a problem potentially occurs semantically when silence is interpreted as only being able to be when one is literally alone, with no disturbing sound around -

this problem potentially re-occurs in the final three words “silence, awareness, focus” -

Silence

silence, to me, has meant the silencing of both the mind and the heart

the human heart is wonderful, as is the human mind, and both have shown the capacity for infinite good, and evil – which might well be the definition of being human ;-)

the silencing of both, allows awareness, and with focus, i believe, creates the opening for each person’s best road of approach in that moment, either the mind or the heart, or, in those rare wonderful times, both the mind and the heart

anyway ;-) that’s my theory, and my experience

which, i recognize, doesn’t mean i’m not missing something

Accepting Individuality Within Oneness

but i must work with what i have, believe, and can accomplish

when i’ve sensed this most, are in momentous crowds, and the moments before sleep

weird huh? ;-)

Open Link Night

Open Link Night, Week 33 ~ from dVersepoets, hosted by joy ann jones (hedgewitch) is a more than usually welcome prompt for me this week

i’d been debating, whether to, “jump in” with an article on the latest twist of yoga headlines, these from another scorcher from the nytimes, “yoga and sex scandals: no surprise here,” or to instead, do a poem via one of dversepoets’ many fine prompts

open link night, and the recycling of one of my yoga poems, “evolution of a pose,” gave me a chance to merge the two, save some time, and let me go out dinner with my wife for a beautiful sunset here in burlington vermont ;-)

Yoga and Sex

my intent, if i’d done a “pure” yoga article reviewing the hubbub, was to link to the more interesting and comprehensive folk, such as :

yogadork’s “William J Broad on John Friend Scandal: Yoga is a Sex Cult and We’re All Ignorant Minions” -

and carol horton’s “Back to Basics: Yoga as I know it, 101” -

and an article i first saw from nancy alder, and is also linked to by yogadork, “Christopher Wallis addresses “Factual Errors” in NY Times Article: Yoga and Sex Scandals

My Take

my own take is, depending on your view, either too simplistic, or too involved ;-) or maybe just right ;-)

for what it’s worth, this is where i stand regarding yoga

1) my understanding of yoga is, like most things in my life, except for a few constants, an evolving understanding – so i’m open to change, have changed (some), and expect i’ll have a few adjustments still along the way

2) my favorite (short) quote about yoga i’ve seen several times, and saw again today on the mindbodygreen site :

it’s from the dalai lama,

“There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples; my philosophy is kindness.”

3) many of the ideas feelings and precepts in yoga, i learned and heard growing up, so yoga is not a sole depository of human wisdom

4) people argue constantly about something with a big “Y” yoga and a little “y” yoga; i default to dalai’s quote above if you need an authority, i’d still think it’s a needless debate if you don’t ;-)

5) getting rabid about sex not being part of yoga is as wrong as being rabid that it is

sex is part of and responsive to eating breathing sports art dance music literature gazing into your lovers eyes and eating a delicious meal, oops, i’m back to eating, now that’s where there’s no real surprise ;-)

6) arguing about the history of yoga, in detail, is like pointless – we don’t even know if JFK was killed by a lone gunman, or in cahoots with others – generalities is the best we can do

i currently write a daily morning poem, and a later-in-the-day gratitude poem, and when i re-read them, i’m shocked at what i remembered vaguely, and what i didn’t remember in detail at all! – though i know whatever it is that happened, i absorbed

7) my physical and, by unavoidable natural connection, emotional mental health is enhanced by physical activity -

as my emotional and mental health enhances my physical health -

yoga does this, as does dance and music and writing and good company and, oh, yes, eating ;-) eating well anyways ;-)

there’s more, i’m sure, but it’s close to time for my wife and i to go eat, with a great coupon of course ;-) from living social - they don’t pay me to say that, i say it because i am grateful for a decent deal from a company i’ve had fair dealings with several times

just like the yoga ladies i mention above as reference probably don’t always agree with my take on things, but i admire them and what they offer for discourse and pondering

and that’s how i feel about yoga, it doesn’t agree with all of me -

i can’t do headstands, hold myself afloat with one hand, or twist the same both directions, but i admire what it does for me, in my breathing, in my stretching, in its (usual) compassion toward self and others, and its advocation of awareness

with that in mind, i offer you a poem that deeply fit me as it creatively came out, ala dalai’s words, of brain and heart – renamed only slightly to clarify it’s a “yoga” pose i’m writing about ;-)

my thanks to dVersepoets for offering a poet’s-option open mike prompt

it’s like offering an open-pose session of yoga -

the yoga of poetry ;-)

Evolution of a Pose

As a tiny child

(I am told)

I

liked to lift

my chest

off

the floor

and peek about

and smile at those around me.

*

As a quietly raucous teen

(i’ve been reminded)

i’d lift my chest

from the

hot

beach sands

that are galveston

to peer around

at my peers.

*

As a young man intent

on learning asanas

i’d lift prone from

the mat

to

the third chakra

i knew must be in there

…somewhere.

A

cobra

i was, i was told.

Maybe, with smiling fangs?

i wondered…

*

In the service

i’d lift my chest

with my breath as

i pressed my finger

on the trigger.

I was a

cobra

now

i thought.

*

As a dad

i’d lift

my head

as my children

learned to lift their head

then their chest,

core muscles moving

them

to the crawling mobile stage -

and i recall

(i would tell them)

they’d lift their chest

off

the floor

and peek about

and smile..at all those around them.

*

The cobra pose is but

a stage of skin

between

the playful peeking child

and the grateful mom and dad.

The pose

is the peeking child

within.

Nothing more.  And never nothing less.

Intro

the dVersepoets has provided another of their continuing series of prompts, this time on “contrast”

as usual, the poet providing the prompt, this time, victoria c. slotto, provides an interesting essay, with numerous visual and written examples of the use and presentation of contrasts

*

The Prompt

almost immediately, though the essay from dversepoets mentions art and texture, things i personally relish, an image from a poem i was working on came to mind – “happy baby pose

the contrasts i felt thinking of this image, involved the incredible softness of a baby, their delicate expressions -

and yet the immense strength and growth of bones and muscles happening at the same time, which allows us to first crawl, then walk

*

Yoga

the lecture sheila and i attend at the university of vermont recently, actually spoke to the necessity of a child developing its core muscles, to even being able to crawl, much less walk

and here we are, as adults, in fitness and yoga classes, needing to be reminded, made aware of, and recapture, the sense of strength and stability we gained when we first developed those core muscles -

when we were happy babies ;-)

namaste´- con dios – god be with you

***

Happy Baby Pose – Ananda Balasana

happy baby pose

is a pose of contrasts

strength

in playfulness

legs curled, hands securely clasped

on searching feet

airborne

the relaxed back resting

on first mother, earth

the core

felt, and tightened, made aware

ready

for movement when feet and hands

roll

the back to the sky and the heart back

to the earth

it is time to crawl

explore

such a happy baby…

Art and Yoga

 Awake

in an image dream

the cerulean blue sky

cracks hair-lines

letting whispers of ancient rules

speak to my surprise.

Fat over lean

i’d heard

say.

But scumble on over

the new water based oils

had said in pinks inside

bright teals

set in green-blue shades of

longing.

What

did I know?

I’d breathed the truth

and wanted to push it into

pigment.

Layered layers.

With peek-a-boo ridges

of the past.

Colors

who’d laid down their

binders for me.

I didn’t know

that

was my edge

I’d followed and fallen down

from.

Though

I do now.

Those hairline cracks upon my canvas

and that curling rising ridge

upon my edge

are

smiling at me now.

I don’t know

why.

But that’s ok.

It’s art I am I’m making.

***

tied to my post later this week, “balance & yoga – a tidbit post, # 8,”  the poem “my dancer’s pose” is titled to indicate this is definitely “my” experience

i’m pretentious at times ;-) but not to feel my own dance experience equates (beyond enjoyment and idiosyncratic personal meaning) to “the” dancer’s experience

yet, dancer’s pose (natarajasana) is one of my favorite postures

there’s a stillness mixed with movement in dancers pose i don’t feel as acutely with other standing poses, and this is something i explore each time I practice this

dancer’s pose seems to awaken an awareness in more than one level for me, it passes more easily to my other interests, which seems natural enough, but goes beyond merely happening to also like dance or aerobic movement -

or even beyond running and jogging, at least in what i did of that in my younger days ;-)

i’m still working through ideas via my post for later this week

as usual, it’s a process ;-)

this week i follow my new yoga poem, evolution of a pose, with a review of a lecture sheila and i attended recently, at the university of vermont, titled it’s a stretch: is connective tissue the link to yoga’s benefits? -

this lecture led directly to a merging of my long-standing idea, that some poses with names like “cobra” might be better named closer to their more probable origin, people – with some developmental data presented at that lecture -

from which this poem emerged ;-)

*

longer than most my poems (though not all, like “when it ended” written in ’81) – my goal was to see if i recognized this one pose, from beginning to present, in some form or other, in my daily life

i found the exercise unusually satisfying ;-)

Yoga is a Sport…

Yoga

is a sport

of breaths

on runs and jogs

through trails of forests

rivers and neighborhood

streets lined with lights,

of beating hearts

set to moving feet and

arms arched to music playing

simultaneously inwardly and outwardly,

of lines of sight

from eyes to hands to hearts

of balls hit and tossed and thrown

against backdrops of vectors seen as one

fabric – one web,

of liquid races in the waters

of feet felt along the paths

of whispers

and whistles sung

by the winds and waters

on our runs and swims and dives

deep along the edges of

our comfort zones

as we compete

and play

within

the yogic loophole -

our edge.

Yoga

is the sport within….

i had some small debate within myself if yoga was a sport or not, intellectually anyways ;-)

in my heart, i knew – i know it is, but differently than maybe first thought so…

*

last week i wrote a review of one woman’s journey from intellectual to emotional understanding / acceptance

this week i have a minor mirror reflection of that same process

how could yoga be a sport!? i asked myself

sportsmanship? i answered

self-sportsmanship?

yes!

i think that’s it… ;-)

two distinct catalysts prompted this poem to finally happen

i say finally cause i knew from way back i’d eventually write “something” ’bout being a yoga teacher, just didn’t know what or when

*

Roadside View, a Little Clearer

Roadside View, a Little Clearer

first catalyst was right before i began yoga-adan, and, in a conversation with nikki at live.love.yoga blog, who’d read some of my work, she asked when i’d have a yoga teacher poem

the question actually kinda shocked me -

i hadn’t planned on doing any yoga poem in the near term, much less a yoga teacher one

my process is to experience something to it’s natural flash point within me -

often times, the subject or activity, is something that, looking back and looking within, i see had flash-pointed long ago ;-) and i just hadn’t thought to write something on it

other times, as with yoga, despite explicitly yoga-ish experience dating back to the early 70′s, i clearly felt no flash point had been reach

nikki’s question, though, was the first flint that’d struck a spark -

*

then, this past week, in an effort to answer himalayan institute‘s now closed twitter #yogais challenge, i created two responses, and my second effort drew fire, my heart’s fire -

#yogais: yoga is the stillness of motion meant by kindness”

in the resulting poem, only one word changed in the phrase

*

A Yoga Teacher (a beginner’s view)

no nirvana’s escape here

this is

the yoga of connection

eyes meant for speaking

breaths

linked to living

touches are

the stillness of motion

meant from kindness

yes nirvana’s here

a whispered union

of communion

my poetry writing process

this won’t be much a surprise -

some poems are born full-grown, hair shaved or with makeup, plus diet organically in place ;-)

others get tweaked -

and a few go through verbal boot-camp with enough revisions to make a tv series ;-)

i also frequently like to do variations, though some have strongly resisted any further mutations

this poem

“…a beginner’s view” is just that, a beginning, and just a view -

when this is the case, i usually have a more ambiguous, less concrete, rendition

it’s like an outline

i have images in mind, and tried, briefly, to go straight to that creation -

felt the outline flow into a sequence, like a newly practiced vinyasa, but knew it’s incompleteness by the silence in the sentences, there were none ;-) yet

so instead, when i have vagueness, in my imagery, i concentrate on rhythm, and stream of consciousness, from line to line…

“…speaking

breaths…

linked to living

touches are

the…”

the context cut short, the double meaning flowing from line to line is more apparent

but the links of meaning will still happen, to degrees, on a full reading

this is not magic, or unique to my work, but a fairly common form within poetry, a sort of stream of consciousness  [1]

stream of actualized consciousness?  hmmmm ;-)

that’s also not magic or unique within yoga, but is also commonly (more commonly?) formed within yoga ;-)

*

the connectedness of human activities is everywhere, it’s like the tiny searching roots of the smallest plant, already reaching, and finding, what is needed…

*

i feel, in time, i’ll have more yoga-teacher variations, but they’ll come, and until then, i have other things needing doing, then the new variation will be the thing needing doing ;-)

so i sense, and hope, for no one truly knows, this yoga teacher poem, my first yoga teacher poem, will not be an only bloom…

ps -

my sincere thanks to nikki at life.love.yoga and himalayan institute for their inspirational kick in my muse’s more than usually tight pants ;-)

[1]  a google search turns up an interesting array of possible follow-up resources if one would like to learn more about poetry in general

there’s all kinds of ways to search, i used “flowing meaning in lines in poetry

one link i liked, is to associated content’s post on poetry basics, this link is to page two in the article

[2]  though there is “tons” of really good poetry, one place i’ve found more recently, with lines i find interesting, is at magazine of yoga

this is just the results from a search for “poem” on the site’s search box
