Assumptions

Little River Along Mountain Road in Stowe Area

Little River Along Mountain Road in Stowe Area © Felipe Adan Lerma

in the almost year and a half my wife and i have been in vermont, being able to visit and be near her family, where she was born and grew up, all the way to graduating from the university of vermont, we have wavered between leaving immediately ;-) , staying longer, and leaving as planned, around this time, but not sure exactly to where we would go next

in that time, our assumptions of what we’ve wanted / needed / should do, have also changed and fluxed, morphed and grown, tweaked and clarified

we finally settled on going back to texas, at least for the holidays, then finally doing a life long dream plan of staying in paris for a month or more, and enjoying that fantasy on at least on a more leisurely level

with news that our youngest girl was expecting her first child, we flipped those plans to going to paris first, then texas, ready to greet the newest grandchild

at this time, that plan seems to be holding ;-)

below, then, is an update on my texas to vermont series of posts, possibly my last one, with a wrap-up and expectations regarding fitness and the arts

On to Paris

Sheila Taking Tourists' Pictures in Paris, circa 2002

Sheila Taking Tourists’ Pictures in Paris, circa 2002

first, once we reach our new exit-from-vermont flight date, due to hurricane sandy, we’re off to paris as originally planned

i have to say though, our week-long delay here at the sun & ski inn has put us into what so far has been the best place to recover from the work we went through leaving our apartment (cleaning and packing etc, seems much tougher the older we get ;-) ) – the image above is the view from our sliding doors at the back of our unit

we’ve had secure for paris what promises to be a nice way to spend an extended time of about five weeks during the non-tourist season – more on that once we’re there

we’ll of course have pictures, and i’ll start a new photopoem series, much like the ones i have for vermont and the birds in galveston, something i look fwd to doing at least weekly

Back to Texas

Sheila by Hike & Bike Austin Texas '05

Sheila by Hike & Bike Austin Texas ’05

before the christmas holidays we’ll be headed back to texas for a year or more, or good, who knows ;-)

it’ll have been the longest i’ve been away from my home state, and three years since we’ve lived in austin (with our 1 1/2 year stay in galveston)

burlington, many people who live here have told me, is the miniature northern version of austin, with its culture, energy, music, good eats, hills, and nearby water -

flip the longish summers in austin with the equal length longish winters in burlington, grace away the over one and a half million population difference, and yes, i’d have to agree, incredibly and often, pleasantly true ;-)

Photo Poems

it appears i’ll mostly be posting photopoems for the near term -

they combine the visual and written arts, and for me are fun things to do

besides numerous stand-alone photopoems, many written for prompts from dVersePoets, I currently have two series, though the latter, the bird series, are really photos with captions – they were my pre-runner to my current photopoem format ;-)

the other set, the vermont photopoem series, is a more fully developed idea of what i like to do for now – it lets me present an image (which i have fun choosing and working up) and a short verse (that i enjoy tying to what the image compels from me)

once in paris, i fully hope to start a new thread, the paris photopoems series ;-)

*

i do want to mention that, besides prompts from dVersePoets, the first impetus to think of combining my own image and verse in its current form, came from a photopoem by jomul, who has an interesting site i’d recommend browsing

Fitness Classes

Adan + 40 Lbs with Sheila on Bike Path, Austin Texas ’05 :
Did I Mention I Didn’t Get Fit (again) Until 2008?

i’d often wondered how i could better motivate my fellow seniors in the classes sheila and i teach, that they too could improve from what ever fitness level they were at, if they wished -

i should have had and shown them this picture ;-) maybe still will

and this post certainly can ;-)

i even was wearing my 100 club exercise t-shirt!! it’s hilarious!

and more so ’cause the way to fitness is NOT just exercise (attentive movement), NOT just diet (sensible eating), but breathing, consistency, persistence, habit – did i mention i had a good partner? ;-) yeah, that too ;-)

but to my senior classes here in vermont, those through the The Y, both the early morning aerobics jazzing line-dancing ladies, but also the chair based gonna do it afternoon seniors – my deepest sincerest thank you !!!

sheila and i will see what we see once we’re back in texas, fitness class teaching wise, but we’ll always miss these great folks ;-)

Last Word – Won’t Be Able to Respond to Comments for a Bit

i’m posting this the day before we leave our temporary lodging because i’ll likely not have internet to respond easily for 2-3 days, depending on where i can get wifi in paris

but i will get back to everyone, so take care, blessings ;-)

How the Notion For This Article Arose

Questions

Adan in chocolate tshirt by pooli gotta be honest, this photo of me by sheila, is a few years old, but i still have the t-shirt ;-)

but the questions that’ve led me to this week’s article, seem to have been around in my mind for a very long time

the main question that started this all for me, led to this site actually :

why and how is it i enjoy so many seemingly varied, and separate, things so much?

arts, and within the arts, painting, photography, and writing

and within writing, dialog, short stories, novels, and poetry

within painting: abstracts and representational impressionism

photography: composition and cropping and visual tweaking

movement, and within movement, dance, running, bicycling, baseball, and on and on ;-)

and this is the creative side -

i also enjoy just plain reading, viewing art, and watching movies, games, and theatre

liking all these things, is a good thing, no problem there

liking and doing or creatively doing them, is…

time and absorption into one or another of the arts or movements can create a separation of creativity from the others -

a question of balance -

one can’t do it all, so that’s natural too

but the question remains, why and how is it i enjoy so many seemingly varied yet separate things, so much?

*

Answers

i became determined, through a sort of reawakening of being aware, when i re-introduced yoga more strongly, into my life -

awareness of how my breath affected my muscles and movement and attention, drew me into a greater awareness during my aerobic dance exercise classes, which i’d already been doing a decade

yoga itself, became more possible in my life, when my wife and i studied through AFAA to become group fitness instructors, and learned very basic things we couldn’t believe no one had ever explained to us -

i learned things that gave me the confidence not to have to rely on simply guru-thoughts about yoga – fitness theory and practice gave me a protective base

why it’s important to warm up, why a cooldown is necessary, that muscles relish and benefit being re-nourished the first 30 minutes after exercise, that ten minute increments of exercise are hugely beneficial even if not consecutive, how bone grows in the direction of our alignment as we move and hold -

those are just basic things! and there’s much more!

muscle memory, recovery, adaptation, interval training -

and meanwhile i was writing, i was painting, i was taking photos, i was dancing -

i was being creative…

***

Elaborations

Realizations

i thought, when i was learning how important were the things sheila & i hadn’t known about fitness, that it would mean the arts would have to take a secondary seat

i was wrong

what we were learning, and what i became more and more aware of, because of yoga practice, is we were being creative!

just not consciously

so i began this web-blog ;-) “integrating” yoga fitness and the arts, sometimes emphasizing one over the other, but always circling around one to the other, finding the links

recently, as i returned to the arts more strongly, after a much-needed focus on fitness, i’ve been working my way, via poetry and photography, with some video and dance, into bringing these varied interests more into balance

balance, of course, is a relative word -

i’m almost surprised it’s not a four letter word ;-)

*

eBooks Are Leading My Way

i especially began outputting over thirty years of creative works, mostly written at this point ( with a touch of images, and a review of senior related work ) into the new digital format, ebooks

within the process of creating commentary and context within the various ebooks, including now formulating creative poetry writing workbook projects within some of my ebooks (deluxe editions) –

i found myself writing, in the section final word of my ebook “teachers students & education specialists,” the excerpt below

essentially, in thinking about and writing about teaching, something very close to me, i saw that, in my case anyways, and i believe  in most people’s case, the act of being creative, and sharing it with others, whether just one friend, or a few family, or many others, is an act of teaching…

*

Teaching – Sharing – Creative

we learn from each other all the time -

even from pets!

when someone leans over and shows us where we needed to enter something on a field on our screen, where a color could use a highlight, or when the car sounds “funny” -

we teach when we share with each other

we do so, even more so, when we’re being creative -

suggesting where a dash of this or that might enhance a dish, or a spot on a favored piece of clothing might be dabbed with the right strength of cleanser, or our alignment is not what we realize

and we fairly easily accept that when someone teaches us something, by sharing some useful or interesting piece of information that impresses itself upon us, that the process is creative in some respect -

wow! they really made me see that! – the way they said that inspires me! – i’ never thought of that before!

we love that ;-) i know i do ;-)

*

Creative – Sharing – Teaching

what i’m suggesting is, simply being creative in our daily lives, and sharing it, in any small way, makes us teachers

the missing link, i think, has been we then also need to believe – as within the process from teaching to sharing to creative – that the transition must be of something that impresses us

that impresses upon us -

fair enough, as dr oz likes to say ;-)

i’m suggesting that, if you or a person being creative, is impressed by a thing-creative, whether anyone else receives or accepts it also, then you or that person has indeed “taught themselves”

physician heal thyself, is, i believe, another way of saying, you must teach yourself, i must teach myself, we must teach ourselves

and that if that creative something is shared, meaning successfully understood or received by any number of other people, even one, then the teaching and the sharing and the creativity, are all enhanced…

and it appears there is then a feedback loop, back to the creating source, which itself, will be new teaching shared, however small or varied, or however limited it may be

i can’t help feeling and seeing how even a pet could participate ;-)

*

ThinkBodyElectric, Carol Horton

a nice example of what i’m thinking of, is carol horton’s recent article, “on light, photography, yoga and the body

her thoughts, tying back to her previous article on the roles of women in current day yoga in western society, link from and to and within ideas on the impact of photography, the evolution of yoga, women and commercialization, and an immersion into darkness without electricity surprisingly altered by the presence of candles…

there’s a vastness of creative thought, and a meandering for truths, that carol shares with us, that feels freshly creative and new-found in its linkages

she may not think so, and i don’t really know, but i see her as teaching when she writes -

when carol shares her creative thoughts -

no different than any us can do…

yes, her impact, at least on me, and apparently many who read her, shows an “enhancement” of her teaching

but even if only her husband or friend, or pet, picked up on her intent, on the creative ideas she found, then she still would have, by my thought, have been teaching

and if carol had felt her creativity as having impulse and power to affect only herself, then, i say, she still would have been teaching

emily dickinson also comes to mind, of someone who’s creative work clearly affected, mostly, if not only, at least herself

so anyway ;-) with that, i give you, in my excerpt from my ebook, “teachers students & education specialists” my first inkling that this may be so

Excerpt from “Teachers Students & Education Specialists”

From the Section “Final Word”

Adan in chocolate tshirt by poolBecause of teachers I’ve known, being a student, and now by being both, a teacher and a continuing student, the subjects in these poems have remained a close and enduring part of me.

Though my first ebooks have been focussed on my sports poetry; and my second full collection is nursing / medical in scope, the teaching-learning angle, if you will ;-) has been dominant.

Yes, I’ve enjoyed sports activities since a small child, and have continued so, even having remained small. ;-)

But I would not have been able to continue in my early 60s, as my wife Sheila and I have, with dance aerobics and teaching strength and aerobics and yoga to seniors, without the education we received from AFAA in fitness and wellness.

My philosophical commitment to my ideas would not have been as clear, without the training I’ve received from many sources.

As valuable as being the first in my family to finally go to college and graduate, was the immense value of my arts and humanities education at the University of Houston Clear Lake.

My closely protected upbringing in a conservative religious Hispanic family in Houston had grounded me in values I still cherish, but I had little exposure to things many people take for granted, the Golden Books, the history of ideas, English and French Literature, readers Theatre, philosophy (of a more formal nature), and any history of Art.

Yoga in the early 70s, with its authoritarian bent, didn’t appeal to me, though the practice did.  So recently, I was able to find and take instructor training from a man who, ironically, had started a studio in Houston in the 70s, Lex Gillan, who believes in the eclectic nature of yoga and people.

These invaluable experiences gave my naturally “teachy” nature, something my kids often alluded to ;-) source-knowledge to begin writing.

Writing, for me, involves more foundational grounding for expression, than painting has.

It should be clear to anyone who sees either of my work though, that I do veer off my own roads.  I follow rules of creativity only to a point, the point, I believe, where creativity is no longer creative unless one does take their own road.

Not necessarily outlandish, though it can be, but just more so idiosyncratic to the person.

With that in mind, I found an expression-niche that suited me in the early 90s, writing short one page “sayings.”  Meant for easy personalizing at mall and craft shows Sheila and I would attend.

I found myself responsive to people’s requests for variations or additions or versions of what I had begun on my own.

The result is a continuing body of over a thousand poems in categories from family to inspirational to occupational.

Sports poems were a natural expression for me, especially anything to do with baseball, running, and dance.  Nursing and medical poems appealed to me because of their helping and often educational nature, plus my exposure to people in the medical field in my first job out of college doing theatre (poetry and scripts) with adult patients in a hospital setting.

And teacher poems were my natural fit.

I’ve come to believe that my creative drive in painting, photography, poetry, theatre, and stories and novels, were only one part self expression towards uniqueness.

I’ve come to believe my equally dominant drive-component, has been to share what I’ve been learning as I learn, because I’ve felt it has helped me so much.

That may or may not be a form of teaching, depending on who is asked, but, for me, creative work is teaching.

It may only be to oneself, or it may be teaching others, and it probably involves both. ;-)

To the worlds and solar systems of universities, formal and informal, I thank you!

Final Thoughts

Adan Lermathe feeling i most gained in the line of thought in this article, is, i really am, just beginning -

just a beginner

that’s ok, i’ve expressed that before

in, among several blog posts, “Teaching a Sequence of Yoga Classes as a Series, a beginner’s view” and “A Yoga Teacher – a beginner’s view” (poetry)

and, in the front of my mission statement, “integrating yoga fitness and the arts” -

i now add – “a beginner’s view”

now that, feels right ;-)

Winning

In the long long course

of a life fully lived,

the process of

the game

of daily doings,

making a living, loving another,

is ample reward onto itself.

But

in the short haul, when

you’re down in the mud, a foot

on your face – on your last strike -

down to your last penny or check

with no credit in sight -

the wind in your face, the seams

pulling apart…well, then -

winning’s a whole

night’s shooting stars

of a lot better.

Final Thoughts

i’ve written another article, also for today, “scarcity and intent in creativity, thoughts” and felt, as the essay is bit involved, the poem would present better on its own page

my bird on a fence photo is used for both postings, and has a much more “involved” meaning once the other article’s also read ;-)

but as with most things, at least when dealing with people, that’s us! there’s more than one interpretation and use for most the things we observe, much as we like to think and feel there’s “only one way”

*

the bird, here, in this instance, in relation to this poem, is simply determining which direction to take, where he’d “win” the most, survival, food, environmental enjoyment

but then, i’m just projecting this onto this cute bird ;-)

i do believe, though, ultimately, there is only one way, only that it’s too big or complex or maybe even holy for us to more than grasp at it, though grasp we must ;-)

if people perish without a dream, there’s no dream, i believe, without the grasping…

and winning the small doings of each day, is huge…

Photography Plus, a Beginner’s View“ – Original Digital Photos, Photo-Poem, Photo-Essays, Photography Poetry, Artist Commentary

Art, gently infused with yoga and fitness. Original digital photography by artist-writer Felipe Adan Lerma. A banquet of uses for photographic images is presented, including detail shots, a photo-poem, photo essays, and original photography poetry.

WEBWIRE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 01, 2011, Burlington, Vermont

Digital Photos * Photo Poem * Photo Essays * Photography Poetry * Commentary

A banquet of uses for photographic images is presented, including detail shots, a photo-poem, photo essays, and original photography poetry.

Artist – Writer for over forty years, Felipe Adan Lerma says, “I strive to simply find a shot I like, then tweak as desired”

Adan, as he says his friends call him, is quick to point out this is a photo book for the average person taking pictures with their camera.  He often uses the auto setting, and then adjusts and crops the image, if needed, in an editing program.

Eclectic in his art interests, Adan brings a wide array of active participation in painting and writing to create an engaging eBook of color images and words.  A gentle infusion of yoga and fitness is felt and expressed throughout the work, bringing Adan’s fitness certifications also into play.

The photo essays, “Playing My Edge in Photography”, for example, discusses “Variations” and “Adaptations”  Using his own digital photos, Adan presents, in one essay, analogies of a yoga pose to that of creating variations of an image.  In the other, his images, illustrating a sequence of basic heart opener movements for gratitude, are explained photographically – why the pictures were cropped or adjusted the way they were.

A full index of the contents, plus samplings of digital images and of a photo poem, are presented on a special page on Adan’s blog, Yoga-Adan.

Presenting yoga and fitness classes to seniors with his wife Sheila, Adan feels the same gentle approach can apply to the arts, including photography.  ”I feel ’Photography Plus’ has a great deal of enjoyment and usefulness for the average person who, like me, wants to create a good picture, but not be a professional”

More information about Adan, including his studies and degrees, can be found on his website’s About page.  Adan’s eBooks are listed on his Authors Page on Amazon Books.  ”Photography Plus” is his second eBook published.

Final Thoughts

reposting one’s press releases is something i used to do on my old art website, mainly just to have a record of them, and it turns out, as per reading i’ve done lately, this is a good idea anyways

i do have a media room now, with info and links to the original press releases, but evidently this is a good thing to have too

like a lot of things in life, probably a good idea to have a backup ;-)

Assumptions

Hills Across Lake Champlain

Hills Across Lake Champlain

i had assumed my sports poetry ebook would be next -

wrong, i ended up starting with a 30 year sampler, which in many ways is becoming my template for the variety of work i have to offer

i had assumed i would move to a wordpress dot org site so i could do advertising on my site -

wrong, i have more than enough projects at the moment here on my wordpress dot com site

my creative energies are best channeled into getting more of my existing content up into ebooks

i had assumed text based work was the main thing i had to offer, ie, my thoughts and learnings about yoga, fitness, and the arts -

wrong, text based work is just one of the means of expressing the integration of those interests

photography and video are coming up strong; next week i will have a major photography announcement to make

i had assumed personal trainer was my next fitness level to aim for -

wrong, closer to my interests, and more applicable and useful, would be training with someone like jill miller; that is a major direction-assumption change i’ve made in regard to my yoga learnings

but, i had assumed, in my most recent texas to vermont post, that the road to integrating my interests in yoga fitness and the arts might be a great unknown -

and there, i was right ;-)

i start to think i’m gonna format or index my book, or a sequence of photos, or my emerging poetry-reading videos, a certain way – but not until the feel and the thought merge, do i gain lasting clarity

needless to say, that’s how i do my yoga ;-)

Future Plans Revisited

YouTube Video Still, "Across the Lake"

Video Poems

this is new to have actually have going on, but i’d thought and thought about this, and finally figured out how i’d get it going – just do one!

well, i did do some planning, but all the research into lighting, sound equipment, editing, etc, that’s a learning curve that’ll show up as i learn it ;-)

my poem from earlier this week, “across the lake” has an embedded link to my first youtube poetry reading video, the video is also posted above

in addition to working with what video technology i have right now, i also decided to go with my first and earliest college theatre work, readers theatre

i threw out the notion of some sort of grand performance quality, ultra polished and serious, i decided i just wanted to have fun with this, yea!

so this is “very” informal, not memorized, and in future videos, i may or may not be shaved, or less or more formally dressed (though i will be dressed ;-) ), and may even possibly do two or more reading renditions, to show how intent can alter the same words and images

i know, sounds yogic ;-)

if you like these, please tell your friends!

*

Photo Poems

this is a neat thing to do i just haven’t paid any attention to before – the opening up of being able to work in digital form with imagery and words, via preparing my first ebook, made me much more aware of this art style

but it was a post, “photopoetry,” by a blogger named joy, that showed me how rich and powerful this combination could be

i’m trying my first hand at this in my new photography focussed ebook which i’m well along the way into now; there’s more info on this new ebook project below

meanwhile, i wholeheartedly recommend the above link

*

More eBooks

30 Year Sampler, Stories Poems & Images, Felipe Adan Lerma

as mentioned above, my next ebook, nearly finished, will be photography focussed

i’ve done photography since my first camera as a late teen, and one day, when i dig out my box of old photos and get me a scanner, will post some of that very early work, or should i say fun? ;-) ’cause back then, it was clearly just great fun

i’m posting the 15 images from my first ebook, “Sampler” in larger format with commentary, including details shots of about 7 of those, also including two creative photography posts from this blog, plus the new photo-poem, and two photography poems – it’s a nice size work

i’d wanted to epublish something for 99¢, to see how that would “take” but the cost to the author for selling a work (the cost to download to a buyer) is based on the amount of digital content -

having images doesn’t double or triple the size of the file, it humongasizes it! ;-)  so $2.99 seems to be the support floor at this time

*

so if i want to offer the work i want to offer, much like if i want to offer the yoga classes i want to offer, or post the subject matter i want here on this site, then choices must be made

in either cases, at this point, i’d prefer to offer the content and quality i feel best satisfies myself and the potential person i’m interacting with

win-win as my yoga teacher in houston, lex gillan used to say ;-) during yoga teacher training

and realistically, for the author/artist and the buyer/reader, to have the level of imagery available, embedded in a photo ebook, or ebook of fiction or poems, with color images, for the small additional upload costs (to the author/artist), is a treat well worth it ;-)

*

other ebook things going on, are, re-writing one of the short stories in “sampler” and uploading it as an addition, as a 2011 version to go with the original 1981 version, so people can see the differences in perspective after 30 years

i think it’ll be good for me to see and feel what the differences time and aging, will have in my writing a “today” version, of what i was coming-from, at age 27, single, and hot to shock and write ;-)

*

my sports ebook is still very much on track, and should eventually see the light of someone’s reading lamp or digital backlighting ;-)

*

Zumba® Videos

it was great fun making my solo zumba music video, then my duet dance music video with sheila, and fully plan on participating once again, once zumba has another dance music video competition

just waiting for some more great music to move to, as paying for a good soundtrack to make a fun dance video isn’t one of my preferences right now ;-)

*

Yoga

the value of yoga, for me, and what i see in the people in our classes, continues to astound me

such a simple thing really, once safe movements and posturings are learned -

which actually helps make poses, simpler!

it means there’s potential, and it means there’s limitations

it means being human with the divine within us

simple, kinda… ;-) but it is a process…

our classes with our core group continue for now in a church basement (which is nicer than it sounds), and we are grateful

New Stuff – Two New Tabs

two of the biggest new changes are on my site

new tabs have been added below the header bar for video and press releases

*

Video Page

Adan Stretching Yoga-like

one is for a page dedicated to listing my new and growing videos, mostly on youtube at this time

my first readers theatre style rendition of a poetry reading of one of my poems, “across the lake” went up this week – very laid back, i anticipate this is just the beginning of these

this video is also embedded near the top of this article

also listed on the new page are videos of scenic footage of vermont, and of art hop, one of the art festivals i’ve showed in

my new video listings page is an important step for me

*

Media Room

the other new tab is dedicated to a page featuring my press releases announcing new events for yoga-adan

most prominently recently, was the announcement of the publication on amazon kindle books of my first ebook, “stories poems & images, 30 year sampler”

this will be an important feature of my site as well

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

there’s so much to offer, i find myself, when i pause to think about it, taking a huge breath

it happens more often now – taking that deep breath, needing calm and energy

and always with those seeming contradictions ;-)

energizing and calming…

yes, yoga does good

Grandma

Grandmas go way back.

So far I can hardly see

my own shadow.

I’d like to think she lived

in a real deep cool green forest,

probably was friends with

all the animals I’d seen

in the movies as I’d grown up.

Maybe she lived on a high mountain

where the snows always melted

right on time with the first flowers.

She just had a kinda magic,

a sweet magic about her.

And it seems her eyes were always

twinkling, amused by me, saying, yes,

yes I could do that little project

that little idea.  That yes, I can

do it, and it would come out

alright…and that,

that’s my grandma.

[ note added 080412 ]

submitted to : dVersePoets Poetics Prompt ~ ‘His’tory, ‘Her’story & time machines, august 04, 2012; hosted by brian miller

additional note to original posting below, brija at stable roots is still blogging and doing art and yoga today ;-)

***

looking around what brija, who writes via her blog stable roots, calls my “compact diary” (my collection of poems dating from the early 80′s; with most done in the 90′s) , i found a few i considered partners for tomorrow’s post -

“your riches within” and “the middle older years, (the reunion)”

but “grandma” is the better poem, both as a poem, and as a companion to the idea of aging gracefully

“grandma” is a composite of my two grandmothers, both of whom i spent some summers with

re-reading my poem, i had flashes of memories of wry playful smiles and light touches and quiet moments, of cooking smells, small tidy rooms, and long soft direct gazes straight into my soul, from both my grandmas

i do remember, as always, with surprised pleasure, distinctly, their separate selves, their individual looks, their touches of kindness -

yet i see them both as one spirit of serenity -

but within that serenity, i also see strength and endurance plus their soft confident kindness holding all that in them, in both of them

yet my biggest surprise, was realizing that, yes, they are my grandmas, and are still influencing me to this day, but that now, i too am a grandparent (have been for many a year) -

and i see myself, not at my remembered level of how they were, but as wanting to be like them…

it’s my turn, and they’ve given me this lifetime gift, my grandmas -

to be a grandpa ;-)

Intro

after teaching our morning chair based class, and after a quick lunch, sheila & i delivered my six small pieces to my assigned art hop location at 180 flynn ave here in burlington

none of the paintings are of vermont; my lone vermont creation, “rock point, vermont” having been a gift to sheila’s dad, and now back with us since he passed away some years ago, hangs in our dining room

painting some vermont images is a clear expected goal of mine

i of course have much photography of my new locale already

even my recent and current blog header is of vermont

so i’m patiently awaiting my own arrival!

of new vermont art that is ;-)

Art Hop

art hop has evidently grown tremendously recently, and this year’s show boasts over 700 paying artists

i feel i should mention the paying part, as, though i am grateful to be in the overall festival hop, i don’t want to mislead anyone that i was juried in; i “qualified” by paying the entry fee ;-)

but the price was reasonable, and the potential and chance to exhibit is good

the opening friday evening event is chock full of locations all around town

and from experience, the saturday crowds are all fun and energy!

*

one of the better article’s i’ve come across on art hop, “19th annual south end art hop,” from art map burlington, says :

“Art Hop’s eclectic nature is part of what makes it a genuine expression of art in Vermont” and “Your rich aunt’s art fair this is not” ;-)

*

the art hop itself is sponsored (run?) by seaba, the south end arts + business association

their slogan is “where art works”

i may not care much for my location this year, but i can’t argue much with that premise ;-)

***

Planned Follow-Up Art Hop Posts

i’d like to do at least two more posts related to art hop

one, maybe some video of the paintings hanging, with a bit of commentary about them – how they were painted or of where or why that image, that sort of thing

that should be a challenge and fun ;-)

*

two, a review of art hop, from my own participating perspective, after sept when the show’s run it’s run

last year, when sheila and i visited burlington, we attended the 2010 art hop with her brother, and had a great time -

but we stayed on the main road of bldgs exhibiting art work, on pine street, and opted not to take the free shuttle to the further locations…

yes, i’m at one of those further locations ;-) so we’ll see how this pans out

there are a fair number of small galleries and related arts-activity small businesses nearby, including a movement studio, a writing workshop location, antique shops, and various other studios

plus, switchback brewery, a local vermont brewery, with tours and tastings, is around the corner of the old industrial complex where my work will be, that alone may make things worthwhile ;-)

***

Final Thoughts

Yoga-Art Quote

i’m still trying to find the site where, in the header, the blog’s owner had a quote from iyengar regarding yoga and art

it was several lines of text at the top left of the opening page, and if i find it, or someone sends it to me, i’ll add it to this post with a notation of when added etc

*

Two Yoga-Art Links

meanwhile ;-)

here’s two links i think worth sharing

1) an article on magazine of yoga, “book review: art & yoga” by the editor, susan maier-moul

quoting the author, Hari Kirin,

“Art is not just a matter of expressing in an outer form that we already know. Like yoga, art is a union of the known with the unknown”

then susan,

Art & Yoga delivers concise and applicable teachings on the chakras in regard to the practice and exploration of practice of both art and yoga”

2) plans on a comet -

an eclectic yoga-arts site, by a young lady who also happens to write a regular music feature for magazine of yoga; obviously a well-functioning match ;-)

emmanuelle, the young lady who creates her site’s art work and musings, is like a gently guided rush of strongly coursing spring waters…

…a beauty to watch make its path, yet with a verve of energy that borders it banks in a way that keeps one alert ;-)

*

My Yoga-Art Quote

how do i tell the difference between art & yoga?

i can’t -

’cause my brush with reality is always a representation of what’s inside… ;-)

originally titled after a location in austin, “tree with stairway to barton springs” i realized the image no longer represented that location to me, or just that location i should say ;-)

one of my favorite images, i still clearly remember working on the painting in the front “art room” of an old house sheila and i once had in austin

people rarely used the steps, either the sidewalk up near robert e lee rd was in need of repair, or the walk at the base of the stairs, along barton creek, had, once again, been washed away in a rare sudden flash flood

but everyone stopping by along the bridge on barton springs rd, or cruising by in a canoe or small boat on barton springs itself, always caught site of the steps connecting people to nature

it was a recognized access-attempt to bridge ourselves to a more natural state

i often heard the indians who’d lived in this cooler more green more serene part of texas, thought the land and water sacred

one could paddle up to the colorado river, now slowed by dams and renamed lady bird lake, and with one quick gasp, be beneath the bridges and skyscrapers of modern-day austin

at night, with the lights of the city winking at the stars above, the view could be stunningly serene; that experience led to my night-time austin favorite  painting, “austin at night”

though i have several favorite paintings set in the day time in austin, “tree, with stairs” is definitely one of those

if there’s a connection to be made or realized, for me, from this art piece and yoga, it’s got to be tied to what the ancient ancestors of the land and waters of barton springs sensed

a willingness for a peaceful unity of ourselves with our earth

Artist Commentary

“Houston Skyline from Sabine Street Bridge”

hard to realize sometimes this was the scene of many of my childhood explorations growing up in houston, this area of buffalo bayou

two churches i grew up going to, St Stephens and St Josephs, are fairly near by

and the houston skyline, well, from my parents’ home, near white oak bayou and tc jester, the esperson bldg was ’bout the tallest thing we could see from the bridge near our house, and it’s not even visible anymore in this scene

but i love the way the skyline’s evolved – i imagined it being this way one day, but never thought it’d be as grand and to the extent it is now

and still, if one turns 180 degrees, and faces west on this sturdy bridge between allen pkwy and memorial drive, is a vastly cleaned up and beautified portion of houston just bursting to go wild again, if not trimmed and cared for regularly ;-)

a good view of this “other view” from the bridge, is in my painting “Houston Buffalo Bayou from Sabine Street Bridge  [1]

- the painting itself is much softer (in real life) than i’ve been able to reproduce online; kinda like the people in houston itself

“San Antonio Riverwalk Bridge”

one of my favorites, partially because it’s of the riverwalk in san antonio, and partly because of the texture and color

though this piece is sold, licensing of the image is available; please feel free to contact me re commercial use of this image

this is of mid morning in early april or so, a wonderful time of day in south central texas, warm sunny but not yet hot – the air is fragrant from the myriad of flowers and blooming trees and shrubs, the day is still waking on the riverwalk

i hope to eventually add to this one image of san antonio with several others; one is mostly done, from a couple years back, but needs re-visiting to be finished where i’d like it; and another, of night, is barely set with an inlay, waiting for its own time to come again

for those of us who have been to the riverwalk, in the day and at night, this image is a welcome reminder; for those who have not yet visited this part of san antonio (walking distance to the alamo) i hope this will add its weight to your desire to visit some day

in the beginning to late 80′s, i had participated in the outdoor drama in galveston, “the lone star,” by paul green, and had done a small image of the alamo i had reprinted into a postcard; the small original was sold to one of the asst directors

adan – march 16, 2008

***

in a process sometimes so slow i feel there’s no movement, i am adding images of my paintings here on my new site, yoga-adan

i couldn’t continue anymore, without finally beginning integrating my interests in fitness and the arts, and yoga seems to have been the lynch pin, or in this case, bridge ;-)

yoga is the bridge of life…my life anyways ;-)

Mom at Museum – “Somebody has to do the cleaning”

had to give it a title ;-)

took mom to the mfa houston impressionist exhibit today with my wife and sister; saw a few real gems from monet renoir and company

had a tastey lunch and chat

"Last Supper" Sebastiano Ricci circa 1720

"Last Supper" Sebastiano Ricci circa 1720

what did mom remember ’bout the art show and like best?

a last supper rendition by Sebastiano Ricci circa 1720, that wasn’t even part of the pricey admission

unlike leonardo’s version, this one has a dog eating up front plus a laundry lady to your left as you view the painting

here was one of history’s most imagined-recorded moments  [1] , the last supper, and what caught her eye, was the dog and the laundry lady -

it spoke reality to her; it said, even then, somebody had to do the cleaning…

that’s my mom ;-)

***

if yoga is, partially at least, the development of a balanced sense of the importance of all facets of our life, then my mom, devoutly catholic, has made that attribute her own

yoga, it seems, like oneness, as part of oneness, is like the air -

no one owns it, we all need it….

but here’s a series of pictures, one or two at a time, popping up here and there, now and then, each captioned and capturing a few moments of life and love, for the birds anyways, but in a good way ;-)

set on a patch of preserve somewhere on galveston island, along the protective seawall, or anywhere on galveston i’m fortunate enough to spot and place their image in digital memory, we’ll just say we’re all glad this is a place they call home…
