it’s been said, a picture is worth a thousand words

well, i’m not gonna try that ;-)

but here’s a series of pictures, one or two at a time, popping up here and there, now and then, each captioned and capturing a few moments of life and love, for the birds anyways, but in a good way ;-)

set on a patch of preserve somewhere on galveston island, along the protective seawall, or anywhere on galveston i’m fortunate enough to spot and place their image in digital memory, we’ll just say we’re all glad this is a place they call home…

*

my first poem of the year, this fifth month, of our last year in galveston

*

Galveston in the 21st Century, in Three Parts

my first trip to galveston

from my first trip from houston with my parents and younger brother, creeping down hwy 3 past hamlets now grown into hustling cities sprawling mid-way back to houston -

up broadway’s final slope to gain the high ground of the seawall

my four year old eyes first saw the now gone mile-long stretches of clean beach

i saw the relentless calling-waves of the gulf, the breeze immediate

i was imprinted with remembrance

i was awakened to my desires

i returned, year to year,

and only just knew

i now carried it

inside me

always

*

our last stay in galveston

cranes and pelicans

hawks and sea gulls

*

they see the island, residents

have forgotten

yet

is always here

*

storm-rebuilds abound

seawall enhancements

new sand, new rock groins groaning

*

shells re-gutted to rebuild the past -

the flagship hotel

hosting families lovers kids and strangers since

i first came here half a century ago

a shell since last hurricane…no

rebuilding the stucco walls

with mermaids

this time

*

‘stead

*

a memory-remnant, from before the seawall, ferris

wheels – fun across the water when casual was

a light full suit, top hats and pants – and

sunscreen

was wire mesh or lace…

back then ;-)

*

now

drivers crawl for parking spaces by the sea as

specks of pelicans v-line the sky

searching streaking lines of food swimming

below

the moving lapping surface

*

the water’s waves rise and fall in chops as sea gulls

swish and sway and stay aloft

currents of air and water change bathing

babies babes and better halves behaving

cautiously, the foreign feel of movement,

salted air, all around their swim-

trunked bodies -

caressing skin unexpectedly, un-shyly…

*

hawks hold back, riding the sandbar’s salty seagrass edge for tiny prey

praying the last lands of food aren’t once again swallowed

by a searching sea

*

everyone remembers this is

borrowed land

the sands shifting seamlessly south

the beach huts and houses rising falling with

relentless winds of timeless changing

*

the pelicans know, were

here before the coast cracked to create

the sandbar Lafitte found so

appealing

*

the cranes say they’ll return and see

what’s left

next winter, other

places to go things to see

*

the people know too

*

the sea calls, but the sea takes

back

*

to live in galveston is to

visit

*

we’re “remembered” by the wind we are

we are but visitors

*

even back, on houston’s higher drier ground

*

so we breathe, we breathe

*

the sea breeze-trails sink memories

from the air

into

every cell

*

we are aloft too

that way…

*

goodbye galveston

i’ve cupped your stars so seldom seen in houston

i’ve rinsed my hair in salt spray licked by waves of green

i’ve seen a thousand sunsets across the bay

as gorgeous as the carribean

i’ve heard your whispers along the rocks stretching fingers

of stone walkways from the beach

and i’ve heard your warnings that only change changes -

hurricanes return, the sunrise rises, the sea birds fish the day

and lovers sense softness beneath their feet, each night, along the crawling shoreline

their breath is the same breath they breathe in from the darkened night

their hearts beat with tides tied to moons and moods and amore

none of this will i miss – it rests, knowing, within me

reminding me, feeding me

i carry you

always, all ways, all the way

back home…

“galveston island nights” – original poetry

***

my choice for the best time to be on galveston island

always a sense of rawness and adventure in the ever moving night air from the gulf

*

though there’s lots of clubs and bars for such a little place, galveston’s real richness at night, is a walk out onto a rock groin to stand beside the waves while looking out to sea and up at stars forgotten in electric lights

or riding west along the narrowing sandbar of an island toward san luis pass

maybe even driving to the eastern end of the seawall to the opening to the houston ship channel, and feeling the opening also pivot to the deeper gulf of mexico

*

night-time in galveston is like yoga’s loophole, where consciousness plays the edges, seen and unseen, but always sensed

*

Galveston Island Nights

Stretches of man-dropped rock groins

sleep into the dark

murmuring

while waves foam warmly

between your toes.

It’s night time

in old Galvez Towne.

Ancient cannibals

are a moon-smile away.

Strollers peek and poke in shops

stocked with surprises.

The night exposes Galveston’s

ship-of-night secrets…

…darkness

swept by air so soft

waves so light

the heat of day cools

in dreams of shimmered shivers.

a poem of perseverance, galveston island is a slip of land a few people slip themselves into -

sometimes, to themselves presevere, sometimes simply to preserve something precious maybe-unsaid within themselves

the pirate jean lafitte is said to have made himself at home here

it’s a yoga kinda place, with the only current yoga studio in town aptly named, the yoga haven

great place actually ;-) an ancient art housed in an ancient building on an ancient island

*

Old Galvez Town

Ancient

sand dune

stretched wide

by the naked flesh

eaters.  Modern day

sun watchers, cruising

the seawall, offering

bargain coconut scents.

A feast for the pale

hordes lost from

denser land.

And when the old

homes quake, shaking

their tall antennae, when

the sea throws a hurricane,

the ancient island also

rises – clothing and

preserving the

naked soul

with

its own

salty truth.

“galveston” – original poetry

***

galveston is an island city of opposites, duality if that’s your definitional preference ;-)

either way, it’s a lot of both the very good, and the very bad

dangerous storms, grime, extreme humidity and heat

but people are an optimistic breed, preferring -

softened fog, cooling breezes, and…

nature’s timelessness…

it’s a sort of natural yoga one can absorb ;-)

*

Galveston

Sea waves crashing when

the hurricane’s winds won’t

stop.  Sea crabs biting in water

stiller than glass.  Summer from

early May to late September.  The

rest of the time only kinda hot.

Victorian houses painted

to look like grown-up

toys.  Victorian

homes creaking and tilting

the old fashioned way.  Old

warehouses made into malls.  A

fog so thin so pure in timelessness

it softens the grime on everything.

Even gives the street lamps a halo.

Then.  In the still night.  That

surprise ocean breeze.  Keeping

everyone in sleepy old Galveston

smiling and dreaming.

if you ever have a chance to go on one of galveston’s historical home tours, do, it’s a beauty of a treat

if you’re like us, you’ll get a glimpse, of what an attempt at grace in home living might be ;-)

*

Old Galveston

The Belle of Texas

Oleanders.

Live oaks -

standing patiently

above the varied palm trees,

wishing them to grow as high.

Ginger houses, 100 to 110

years old, surrounded by

the older homes.  Both

with double wooden

walls and tall tall

windows graced

with evening

lace.  Decks

and quarter-decks

wrapped round two

floors.  Often peering at

double gallery porches chiming

lightly in the ancient ocean breeze.

All the island lovers feel it.  The fresh

and easy peace given freely from a vanished time.

Old Galveston.

it’s a bit sad, that now, 14 years after i wrote this poem, about the century old oaks that graced much of the east end of galveston, they’re gone

an estimated 40,000 trees were lost due to hurricane ike in 2008

whether one considers galveston a sandbar, or a barrier island, it takes not only courage to exist here, but patience and acceptance…ask the pelicans ;-)

ask those who practice yoga…

sheila and i are in our last week on galveston island

and we feel like we’re cruising, just cruising right now, waiting for our new place to arrive, though, of course, we’ll be the one’s arriving ;-)

opportunities, exist, all the time, all around us, but we can’t and aren’t always aware of them…

we think they arrive, and maybe, in some ways, they do -

but if we ourselves aren’t prepared to see them -

even if we’re just cruising…they

will not arrive ;-)

so many people gave us opportunities in our stay in galveston this past year plus -

some i’m sure we missed, but as many as we could, we tried to see them…

the people we met and grew to know, were our moments -

our opportunities, and we thank each one -

on the mainland, and on the island

thank you ;-)

playing my edge with photography, variations

Intro

the idea for documenting this photo experiment, is a recent post of mine regarding playing your edge

this post is both an actual exercise, and an example, of playing my edge creating photographs for an article

result is, not an unusual edge-play on my part, but rather a breakdown of the process i often go through, sometimes more quickly, other times more extendedly ;-)

*

First Images

below is the original photo, uncropped and as is from the digital shot

*

Field of Early Spring Flowers, Original Photography by Adan Lerma, Original

Field of Early Spring Flowers, Original Photography by Adan Lerma, Original

*

the first variation, a saturation adjustment, is directly below…

i adjusted the slider in photoshop the way i adjust my arms and legs and back in an asana, tinkering, tweaking, feeling the feedback -

*

Field of Early Spring Flowers, Original Photography by Adan Lerma, With Saturation

*

not a whole lot of difference -

though i can see and feel the change

and i’m still pretty partial to the original -

but my goal with this image, was to play with the feeling in the image

my intent, my purpose, having preserved the original to return to, like a pose position i know is right for me, but isn’t strong enough to yet hold me from experimenting, was to see what i could create from it, my starting point

*

like a favored or well liked asana, i know i can trust to return to it as needed

meanwhile, if my “edge” is flowing like the tide toward the unknown – the pulling side of the edge being felt as worth an effort and a look, and the known retaining side of that edge willing to release -

then, as i mentioned in my post about the nice things about getting older, it’s time to “play ball”

*

so my first exploration, of a pose or a photo, is to simply add some color or movement to it -

and see if what i experience is worth keeping as is, pressing further, or discarding

*

in the photo above, i like the final saturation experiment i did on the original, but not enough to dump the original (in the sense of no longer using it)

the same holds true for the new version – i like the extended color range, it seems to open depth in the image, create some contrast i like…

at this point, i’ll usually remind myself there are no absolutes -

at least at this stage of playing my edge ;-)

i am free to play with my options…

*

Relating Yoga & Imaging

it’s as if i was in a forward bend, standing or sitting, had reached my set range of motion, and was resting there, breathing…

my saturation adjustments in the image, would be similar to my bodily adjustments, much along the lines ray long recommends in his blog, the daily bandha -

working back and forth, with my breath, with reciprocal inhibition and golgi tendon working among other processes, in my legs and back and shoulders -

i add and subtract hue differentials, saturation points, light – dark values…

the edges play back and forth like the wave motions within any given tide

these actions are mostly done intuitively, searchingly, quickly -

after some hesitations ;-)

*

the thing is, intuition, mine anyways, works best with practice, and sufficient practical knowledge -

another edge-play in itself!

the encouraging things about all this, for me, is the constant reminder that this is definitely a process…

the occasional instant perfect rendition or pose aside, the majority of all my creative work, in art or asanas, is an on-going process

i stop at points of an image or posture that say it is good for me

true stopping points, even if temporary, often elicit a breath-gasp that surprises me awake, back from the process, back to the everyday -

whatever it is that it is i’ve found, in creating a painting or poem or pose, fits

it rests and resides perfectly at peace in this world

it’s rare ;-)

the breath-gasp reminds me most of how a small child will involuntarily gasp a sudden deep breath of air when comforted…

returning to calm…

*

in the case of this image, which i hadn’t planned on using for the purpose of this post, i was especially curious how various filters would take this field of color, and transform it

much as if, in my imagined forward pose, now definitely a sitting pose  ;-) , having grasped my feet in one of several modifications of approach, i’d transferred my right hand to my left foot, and raised my left arm up to the sky, my gaze following my raised hand and fingers

then again further modifying my effort by bending my right elbow, laying my head down, and deepening the upward arm extension by also, consciously, opening my chest

all experimenting, feeling, sensing, seeing what’s what…

this first filter is a glass filter

*

Further Explorations

*

Field of Early Spring Flowers, Original Photography by Adan Lerma, Glass Filter

Field of Early Spring Flowers, Original Photography by Adan Lerma, Glass Filter

*

i love the effect, but wouldn’t want to abandon either my original or saturated versions, nor, as with my asana work, my self-directed pose modifications

no further tweaking done on the above image, i like it as is

the final image below is a mosaic filter

*

Field of Early Spring Flowers, Original Photography by Adan Lerma, Mosaic Filter

Field of Early Spring Flowers, Original Photography by Adan Lerma, Mosaic Filter

*

also a beauty, yet very different -

as if, in my imagined modified fwd bend, with up raised arm and opened chest, with my head resting on my supine legs, i now added breathing motions – raising and lowering not only my arm but adding a half side plank rise on the inhale up -

hard to recognize or remember the orignal forward bend, or field of spring flowers

but they’re there, waiting…as needed…

*

a word of detail on the last image -

i did tweak this image further, since the first rendition left more a spotlight effect of light surrounded by dark i didn’t care for -

by practicing swipes with a dodge tool brush of varying sizes, doing then undoing in photoshop, i found the sweep of light i wanted across the patterns of color

like spot of muscle needing tender awareness and breath -

it wasn’t a bad image or the “wrong” image, but not what i wanted to feel

didn’t elicit that gasp-breath ;-) but definitely a brain-heart calm

*

More Examples

playing your edge(s) with yoga & art

my bird series photo-posts range from “as is” to slightly tweaked to significant cropping or adjustments, but always in trying to keep the feeling the actual sight first evoked in me

*

of the images in the post i mentioned at the beginning of this article, “the yoga loophole, playing your edge,” is one in particular i played the edges quite a bit

lights and darks, hard and soft, with corollary feelings attached -

the touches of light along the edges of the door and wall were added, plus other touches ;-) ; in this case i felt this helped the original gain some of what i sensed in the original

*

flying yogini, an online yoga post i read recently, from nancy, continues a series of self-explorations, which strike me as very much “playing your edge” ;-)

more and more am seeing very nicely written connections between the nature and everyday life around her, and her internal world

*

if i have a final word about something i see mostly as a process, it’s i’ve found there are lots of scenic sights for pausing along the way -

internal-mental-emotional and bodily vistas in poses and pictures that work for you in a particular moment -

and you can stay and enjoy, for as long as you want -

returning whenever and as often as you like -

like a favorite image on your wall -

a go-to never-fails posture -

it’s your edge ;-)

as per my friend, they mate for life, and their young stay with them for “a couple of years”

never got to see the chicks, but you can tell, there was a party going on ;-)
