Starting in my early 60s I began researching and posting about senior fitness here on my blog under the rubric of “Aging Gracefully.” 😊

Now, less than a year and a half to 70, checking my Garmin fitness tracker my kids gave me for Christmas, I was reminded this morning on a walk back home how just stepping steady and consistently brought me well in range of intensity levels recommended for my age to strengthen my heart.

The formula, at healthiak.com is explained here and is adjusted by age and gender. And here’s a Google search for heart rate zone calculators in general for more options 🙂

Here’s a pic of my target metrics —

It was a relief for me to see that going to The Y or gym, work up an out of breath sweat on the elliptical, see a reading between 137 to 152, and realize I wasn’t merely “out of shape!” I was at all out intensity and certainly shouldn’t expect myself to maintain that overly long – whew! 😊

There’s lots more to learn about of course, most everyday I find out about something else via my wife or reading or newsletters I’ve signed up for.

And of course always check with your doctor first when unsure or just want your own personalized opinion for you.

More of my Aging Gracefully posts, from recent to back to 2011, are available on my site.

    • Our youngest son-in-law swears by swimming! My wife Sheila & I loved our water yoga classes at the Y for a long time, so much less pressure on the joints — I could do stretches in the water I’d have a real challenge doing outside it! 🙂
