Playtime at the Edge of the World

Costa Rica is a tiny connecting
piece of land
with
a
vastness for anyone to see…

It was easy
standing by the edge of
low lapping water
head
high above
the quiet froth of foam
nibbling at my toes –

Easy
imagining
the sticky sand
stretching beneath the low wall of waves
curling flush below the sky
slipping with the
undertow
being
but the
sliding edge of half
the earth reaching fluidly
to it’s other half –

Because it did.

To the South Pacific.
Past Russia.
China.

The waters mingling asway with seas
surrounding peninsulas
worlds away.

Speaking its same wet murmurs
to different tongues.

We understood.
All of us.

And

me
a fulcrum,
a tiny lever, a
moment, when Time chose to
pause –

And

make note of me –
a bell –
symbolic symbol –
irreducible with atomic meanings.

I felt that that day.

A cleaver
slicing the sheet of earth in two
with my eyes –

Choosing to merely leave my mark.
A toe scratch upon the sand.
Beneath the tiny waves.

The Pacific Ocean also choosing.

Erasing only a part of me.

The mark I left behind.

    • Thank you, Sharon! So glad you saw this & liked it! I’d had a poem for this moment working inside me the 2 1/2 years since I shot the picture, but took til now to find it’s way into words. I wrote it a day before posting & was editing it right to when it went live, lol! 😊
