My Yesterday in Pictures Format

I’ve simply built my daily walking & painting up to the point where I need the time for these two vital parts of keeping me healthy and/or sane, lol!

Plus, instead of having to work images into the My Day Ahead series posts, this new series will enable me to keep those as pure text, and supplement with images from a variety of possibilities here. It’s an experiment of course, so we’ll see 😊

My Floral Photography 2008-2019

Yesterday’s My Day Ahead (Tue, Nov 26th), I went into a kinda history of Sheila and I living near Lady Bird Lake a good chunk of the last two decades, and how with our move further south in Austin, we both felt we’d gotten most of what we could enjoy from living near central Austin, and, that what I’d probably miss most now was, the lovely flowers the folks who’ve lived in the neighborhood (many far longer than we did) lovingly grew each spring 💕

So today, My Yesterday in Pictures continues that thought with a selection of floral images from our past two decades 😊

First a few examples of my floral work prior to this spring’s flower-fest in our old neighborhood. Through the years, I’ve used a variety of cameras, though lately mostly either with my iPhone XR or my Canon G9 X Mark II compact. The above floral was captured in 2008 on our patio.

And this little orange beauty was part of a ceramic bowl with engraved with the Indian cliff dwellings like at Mesa Verde. It was captured in 2010 in Galveston on probably the largest patio/balcony we ever had (minus a double gallery porch 1800s home in Galveston in the 90s).

Pretty in pink was the only spring I’ve ever experienced in Vermont, where we moved to after a year and a half in Galveston. We’d also stay in Vermont a year and a half, two summer and two autumns. One winter, one spring. My wife planned it that way ‘cause she knew which season most to avoid – winter. And because we then moved back to Texas, with a detour in Paris ❤️, I got to see one spring season. One hugely surprising spring! Flowers burst from the ground and stems and trees like kids let out from school for summer! 😊 It was so grand we were literally part of huge strings of people crawling the streets gawking the grounds of the various college dorms and student buildings. Living on College St, I should have anticipated that, lol! But I was just a naive Texas native 😊

Then, even in early to mid-November, Paris the City of Lights, showered us with flowers! Granted, only here and there, like here along the Champs-Élysées, and of course, Luxembourg Gardens. I would love to return for a full spring, and a full autumn, and, well, okay, however long I could stay here ❤️

Eventually, finally, to start 2013, even if reluctantly on my part, lol 😂 we returned to Austin. It took awhile to explore out to Butler Park above. I have pictures of this vast park area on the west side of the Palmer and Long centers as nothing but a flat grassy dust bin. It took many years of dedicated work to create a hill there (from the soil removal that created the lake there) plus the winding paths lined with plants that folks could walk and enjoy 😊

And it took until I began walking in January of this year to closely cover the variety of lawns and landscapes residents had built up over even more years. If you look closely at the shadow upper/middle right, you can see me taking this shot 😊 I discovered, because of my proximity, I could experiment and find when the sun highlighted the blooms in what ways. Experiment may even be too mild a term. Even small variations in the time produced differing if pleasurable results. Deciding which I liked best was a challenge I didn’t even recognize for several months – just in time for the full spring blooming 💕

Between my iPhone’s exposure slider setting, and my Canon compact’s timer and other options, I began to find ways to extenuate the contrasts between light and shaded areas, sometimes, like above, testing differing angles to see if I could naturally silhouette the blooms against a dark background, preferably with glimmers of what was almost hidden in the background. At times a breeze would blow and countless shots were needed to grab one or two gems that whispered magic promises to me. It was all in plant and light language, so I never was certain of the promise. But I was certain something in me had been grabbed and pulled tight as a newborn babe to its mother. It wouldn’t let go, and I didn’t want it to…. ❤️

The more I walked the more I discovered. Fields in side yards nourished into wild splendors of colors and scents.

Side streets with thick fence high walls of greens and reds and more.

And a few, on the open slopes of lawns shaped with ridges of lavenders and blues in bluebonnet season.

So yes, I’ll miss that about our old neighborhood. It can’t be helped.

But yes, I’ll also gladly explore the places nearer me now. Wimberley. Blue Hole. And of course, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center 💕

    1. Yes! I think I was more shocked by they’re being there at all start of the Christmas / holiday season (it was pretty chilly, even coming from Vermont, lol!) than how beautifully they were lit & preserved. Paris knows how to celebrate and preserve beauty! Thanks, Tatiana! 😊
