This is of course not an exhaustive listing of my art.
For many years, as I regathered myself back into painting, figuring out how to proceed, both in terms of styles, but also mediums and materials, I focused on my photography.
As per my usual obsessive nature 😂 I fussed over getting the photo exactly as I wanted, at least in terms of ascetics, ie, the lighting and angles and framing the image as closely as possible to what I’d want if already cropped etc.
I’d done much the same with my art work, working from either perfectly (sort of 😊) cropped when shot photos, or adjusting the photo image to my canvas size.

It’s a tough switch for me, picking up brush with paint vs picking up a camera.
Switching from the exactness of line and light captured (even if framed by my eye) by a machine, exquisite as it is — to the amorphous shifting intangible (even if more powerfully felt) world inside me.

One of my “problems” growing up (I guess that’s been the last nearly 70 years, lol!) was being good at a lot of things. Though I should have, probably, maybe, concentrated or committed myself to one path, or one discipline, or one art, I didn’t.
I loved exploring and experiencing everything I could do and write and paint and draw and move to.
At least I generally stayed within the arts 💕
Time and or money usually dictated which art I focused on at a particular time. Sometimes gladly so, other times, very reluctantly so, occasionally having to let go of an art expression I really was into at the moment (poetry or dance or oil painting) and let it go. Switch to something either my body or my time or my availability of materials (money) allowed.
But, I did, very generally, and very consistently, remain or return to the arts each time.
Eventually, or right away.
I took my kids to plays, art classes, dance rehearsals, movies.
I took my wife to the same and found a strong compatibility exiting to this day.
So I’ve few regrets.
There’s always a few, I believe, if one is honest with oneself.
Some couldn’t be helped. Some definitely could have used better self knowledge.
But overall. Only a few, relatively speaking 😊
So now, nearing 70, I’m into watercolors, on canvas, on absorbent ground.
It could be worse, lol! My only venture into sculpture and ceramics was a decision to make a huge trash can 😂 Wish I still had it!
My decision not to venture into (this is early 70s) becoming a salesman/dance teacher at a ballroom style dance studio probably saved me a lot of heartaches. My decision not to move to NYC to do “whatever” probably saved my life. And my decision to enter the Air Force in my mid 20s with wife and 2 small children in tow finally gave me the means and time to explore the interests in college (GI Bill) I’d never been able to afford before.
Including painting again, since my late teens and very early 20s.
I tried watercolor then.
But was so dumb I didn’t know you “added” water, lol! Tried it dry, did ok. Still have the work on paper of a tea jar on a back porch railing making in the sun. Couldn’t figure out why the paint didn’t “flow” 😊 Switched to oils til my 1st kitty, Sundance, decided he liked walking on the wet paintings ♥️ Switched to acrylics, for a long time. Lot of fun playing with them, but ran out of time and money and switched to framing pictures and owning a poster shop across from the University of Texas. After a very long time, including doing art shows and malls for over a decade, where I picked up poetry again, I made the decision to learn impressionism, but with water soluble oils (easier to clean up). Did that til I exhausted myself with doing art in a town preferring very avant-garde fun pieces I liked but didn’t want to produce. Took a long break after a decade of painting and traveled with my wife back to Galveston, then Vermont, then Paris, and saw that not all art that was liked, and being bought, was modern funky, decided to write fiction til I began flooding my stories with photos, to illustrate the stories, but really, because I wanted images again. And began painting again a few years ago. Water soluble oils, to acrylics, to watercolors.
Back where I began in the 80s.
But with water 😊

I still miss not being able to do “everything” – but finally, not realize, but accept, one can’t do it all.
And I can and do switch styles, somewhat, within my new watercolor art.
Figures, landscapes, abstract, florals.
There’s an amazing world within my world of art.
And that will have to compensate for not being more than one person, lol!
Because one of the most obvious, now, events within me about art is, I find myself.
When I’ve gotten an art piece to as far as I can technically or physically get it to, it’s where I recognize some very central part of me that I approve of.
Some sense of goodness and beauty that, if I can successfully share it on canvas, becomes my story to my grandchildren and beyond, and is my hello and reminder to the world around me, these things I see and feel, I think, carry some sort of hope and faith about our world I think is impossible, for me for sure, to live without 💕
