While extremely grateful our own electricity and heat and ( eventually ) internet held during this year’s early February winter storm here in Austin, and am also both surprised and equally thankful the state’s power grid held in general this time around, compared to last year’s mid February storm, there are a few things to remember – as a prod to continue to gird our grid so to speak 😊

Most importantly, on the plus side, Texas evidently has / had quite a few mega watts of power above peak use the last few days – though – and the minus side, chunks of the state hardly went below freezing, both in terms of how much below freezing and for how long – and still our state’s usage was near the same usage as during last year’s storm.

So while it’s great and more than welcome we have more available power than before, it’s important to remember we weren’t taxed nearly as long, nor as completely across the state, and at not nearly as deep a drop in temperatures, as our winter storm of mid-February last year.

What that means is we need to continue to build back our grid.

Below is the latest advice via our local EMS —

If all continues to improve, I’ll do a wrap-up post tomorrow with pics and links to comparisons of this year’s storm ( while remembering Feb ain’t over yet! ) to last year’s that caused so much death and hardship. Details that tell us how differently these two storms actually are from each other.

Meanwhile, stay safe everyone 🙏 ❤️

  1. Felipe, I am really glad to hear that the lights and heat stayed on during this recent storm. My in-laws are all in Texas and it’s become so nerve-racking every winter. Hope y’all are having a great and much warmer weekend.

    • Thanks, Adam! Each day’s warmer, though the nights’ve still been mid-20s round Austin & lower in the hill country; Houston & south warmer as usual; hope your in-laws are doing ok; temp differences from last year’s winter storm, like in Houston for instance, were 13 to single digits vs 27 this year. This year (so far) been very lucky!

    • You too, Francis! Thanks so much, we’ve been very fortunate – used almost as much energy as last year’s winter storm, even with temps well above last year’s lows & much less of the state affected, and have a surplus of power wattage still available – much to be grateful for, and much to be hopeful for of what still needs doing. Just hoping we don’t get another stronger Feb cold blast, lol!

    • Oh, Francis, have been seeing your new posts, but couldn’t find a like button or comment section; maybe if I go via the WP reader? vs via the web browser? I’ll check later today – got some ice clearing still needing doing & an internet tech coming out to check the cable. We haven’t been outside and down the stairs from our apt for a few days, lol! 😊
