September 22, 2022 – Clean Energy, Part 5 – The Practical Problem, and, How #Solar Kept the Lights on After Fiona Left #PuertoRico in the Dark

The bulk of the info is a very fairly laid out presentation that a 90% of renewable energy is mostly doable and feasible. The only really debatable portion, and Dan presents pluses and minuses for each possible choice, is how to supply that last needed 10%.

Puerto Rico, and the devastation it’s again suffered due to a hurricane strike, is one of several add-on shorts, and one about I’ve heard little of on any media so far. The short add-on is titled, “How Solar Kept the Lights on After Fiona Left Puerto Rico in the Dark” — here’s an excerpt :

Hurricane Fiona knocked out power to nearly all of Puerto Rico, leaving consumers with solar and batteries as some of the only people with the lights on. Since 2017, more than 40,000 Puerto Rican households have installed or are installing rooftop solar….

As mentioned, lots of renewable options, with plus and minus, are discussed; six in fact :

• Wind and solar power with short-term energy storage and an expansion of interstate power lines
  
• Other renewables, including geothermal, hydropower and biomass.
  
• Nuclear, along with fossil fuels and carbon capture
  
• Long-duration energy storage using hydrogen
  
• Carbon dioxide removal
  
• Reducing electricity demand

So why is this last 10% so important in the challenge of transitioning to renewables?

In the current grid, more than one-third of the country’s power plant capacity is needed to meet roughly the last 10 percent of demand, according to the NREL paper. This means there are hundreds of power plants that sit idle most of the time, but are an essential resource for making sure that there is enough electricity to meet demand on the hottest and coldest days of the year.

Not an insignificant necessity to “fill” in. Especially with more and more hot days happening, punctuated with streaks of brutal cold….

So yes, for me, this is one article worth remembering!
