I still vividly remember the images on TV 1970 of students my age shot and on the ground during a demonstration against the Vietnam War. I was draft age. I had kids and a wife. But I knew we had survived McCartheism, when I was but an unaware child, and wars beyond, told and untold before I was born. Many, I began to learn later, were not things the average man and woman cared for.But wars and killings seemed as inevitable as bad weather. No one I knew seemed to know why, But, as a teen and then a young man, it felt we still basked in the promise of President John F Kennedy, even if ruthlessly killed. We still believed in a constitution we had pledged our hearts and allegiance to since grade, a flag that we still believed meant and said – all men are created equal. And, I took for granted that included folks like my mom and sisters, aunts and grandmas. And I still do. But what I feel has changed for me, is that this time, the women will have to take us over the pile of souls and bodies that fell before – trying, wanting, needing that pledge of allegiance to be more fully true. We really don’t want or need more bodies among us to also fall dead for this to come true.

One by One 2026

The seeming storm surge of women gathering consensus from across the aisles of divisions amplified by a profit engorged media didn’t fly in on mass transport, like teams ready to play for cheers and jeers of masses of bundled arm waving bodies.

No. They came one by one.

They’d seen the bodies pushed and shoved and shot on their small phone screens and room size entertainment centers. They’d felt a cringe crease their hearts. They’d seen their children hesitate and quiver with the uncertainty of certain fear. The shifting sunny future of living had shrunk into a foggy uncertain moment, refusing to pass and move on and leave us to our fruit juices and next detective TV show from our favorite paid cable channels.

Yes. They had woken one by one and dressed one by one and one by one thought deeply into their hearts, and one by one, the women walked into our consciousness, saying, eyes twinkling with needed strength and necessary love, it’s time….”
