New Cover for – One Night in the Hill Country

I’d created my original cover for One Night in the Hill Country nearly a year and a half ago using one of my own original images from the Texas hill country. It was okay, captured some of the mood of the book, but didn’t have the impact I really wanted.

Nico Laeser, an author, musician and artist had recently helped me design the cover of my new thriller, Queen the Serial Novel, also using one of my original images, so I sent him a few more hill country photos I’d taken.

As with the Queen cover – for the full novel as well as for the initial serial installments – Nico zeroed in on a cropped portion of the image that brought out a distinct feeling. Also, in this case, he added a night sky of his own.

From there, the image being very deep, I lightened it slightly, adding tints (as I did with the stone pillars on the Queen cover) plus lightened the dry shrub and rocks.

One Night in the Hill Country addresses a lot of serious issues in the story, but there’s a pervasive optimism and hope in the main character, Samantha Lacroix. Plus the young tween cousins with her are irrepressible. They brim with energy and the confidence from being raised by parents who believe they will grow up strong and well and good.

Whatever those might come to mean to those children.

Sam (Samantha) sensed that about them from the first time the met (see Dirty Sixth Street, Austin).

Thus, the stories must and do guide the final result.

In this case, with Nico’s help, much more so.
