Band
It all seems to happen
at once. First
there’s a oneness with your
music your instrument. You
and the sounding come together.
Then you take your own harmony
and blend it – immerse it
with everyone else’s sense of harmony.
Finally,
you, your band-mates, the music itself
finds – responds to the crowd,
that mass of faces:
friends, family and who knows who,
all listening
responding to you and the sound
racing through the stadium
up the streets. Down your spine.
It’s awesome. It’s music. It’s everybody.
It’s you.

anyone who’s played in a school band probably knows this experience
i was first in a small elementary school band, then in our jr high’s school band
i played second chair, so sometimes i got the melody dancing through the sound-story, other times i helped keep the beat, changing cadences as per my music sheet –
playing alone, at home, was magical, if noisy 😉
but playing with the whole band, for people not also playing, changed the auditory and third-eye, uh, third-ear, dynamics
if i desired to keep up with the group, and keep feeling that strange very strange magic flowing ac/dc through the hall or auditorium, hyper-awareness had to be allowed access
it was a letting, which became a happening, which created a breath that breathed one heart
i was awestruck, and i knew what awesome meant –
as long as i also cleaned my spit-valve 😉
life involves maintenance…
