Nursing
Your career in nursing has
brought out all the best in you.
You’ve bloomed into a complex
caretaker presenting so simply
the heart to care plus a mind to
understand and instruct us.
Yours, is a dexterity of touch –
swift and sure to heal when needed.
Lingering and warm when requested.
Even if silently asked for from open
or shut eyes. And you lavish on us
that most precious of life’s
commodities, the one that
cannot be bought or sold –
your quality time.

an optimum combination for oneself and to offer to others –
that’s yoga, that’s nursing…

Feels very weird adding another notation to a comment I added nearly 5 years ago, and even more so, seeing my commentary even further below 2008. I think it gives me perspective for me to me more than anything else! But the poem still holds. The art form still works true to today (smiles).

i re-read my commentary on this poem when i’d posted it on my previous site, and decided to simply repost most of it here, as it simply still stands as true to me

Artist’s Comment: though appealing to most nursing people, this particular poem appeals and is attractive to recent nursing graduates or those re-entering the field
the recognition of the dual responsiveness demanded of the best of nursing personnel, the need for both swiftness and a slow steady heart, the pause to listen and the quickness to act, is a highlight of this work
