Text & No Text – Two Entirely Different Moods

Intro

Just a quick post on posters as I wait for my first test batch of prints from Harold, my owner/printer at Southside Printing here in Austin.

Harold’s been around a long time and part of why is his patience and interest in trying to see what an artist is wanting in his or her work. That’s “very” nice 😊

So this short article is simply to show the – to me – stark different between the feelings evoked by the poster with text vs the poster with no text.

And don’t get me wrong, I like both, very much, or I wouldn’t begin to offer both. I couldn’t! I’d be too bored and feeling guilty doing that, lol! 😂

Comparison / Contrast

So, below I’ve reposted the same side by side renditions as top of the post, and because of the sizing, accomplished via vertical placement, I get totally differing feelings.

For me, the top image is very introspective, sensitive and almost sad, though I think the story is uncertain. Mysterious even.

Then, viewing the bottom image —

…I feel a lift. A hopefulness.

And I don’t feel it’s the text itself so much as the coloring.

The text color acts like accent pieces, jewelry almost, brightening and making the night scene filled with optimism. The “promise” of gold almost 😊

Conclusion

That the black no-text border of the top image allows for easier customization by a buyer to suit their home or office or gift-giving reason – and – that the gold text of the bottom version might speak to a tourist or Austin-proponent more easily…

…was not on my mind when I created the two.

Feelings created by each rendition dictated my efforts to find visual voice.

The rest, easier customization & tourist-Austin-friendly — is a side effect bonus!

I hope 😊

  4. Hmm, I do like them both, yes, the text on the print give it a very different look/feel! So interesting!

    1. It is isn’t it! It amazes me still it does! It just isn’t a one done thing, like oh yeah, change one thing and it changes things; no, it “changes” things. Why and how was what got me thinking as I reviewed them with an eye to whether one or both (or neither) would be a good try as a poster to offer. It forced me to think beyond what “I” liked, beyond what appealed to just me for fun. But I still like them both too, lol! The paradox of creating a look for oneself creatively, then facing the other way and beginning the process of offering art to strangers while keeping in mind the logistics of limitations in money, time, and demand. Ahhh, and I was afraid life would have become uninteresting nearing 69 😊
