I’d been searching for a way to experiment with the Light Molding Paste I use a lot recently in my newer acrylic & acrylic / watercolor painting, and kept reading ’bout one can mix paint directly in with the paste. But that’s all I’d get, info wise, lol!
So, I had an errant 12×24 1.5 inch gallery wrap canvas from I don’t even remember when and thought, well…
I got me a large sturdy paper plate ( I didn’t know how much mess I’d make ), laid dollops of yellow onto it, lathered scoops of my light molding paste ( Goldens in this case ), put some rows of heavy body white ( Titanium vs Zinc ) across the canvas randomly, mixed the paste and yellow paint into a semi-mixed mush, picked up a big metal palette knife, and started painting to see what I’d see 🤞 😊
Using a large knife helped me spread it quickly and, once covered, allowed me to play with how I wanted to squish it around.
The big challenge for me was moving quickly enough to convey the flow I felt, and, slow down enough to not re-spread an area I really liked!
I was sorta successful, losing a few neat textured patterns, but capturing others.
Below, you can see a detail and subtle gradations of one area —

For now, not wanting to lose the edges around the painting to a frame was / is a big factor in using gallery wrap canvases, and this 12×24 was the only one I had at home, so I picked up my only other two, plus a few more gallery wraps, from my stash of the smaller 6x6s I was using when a 1st started experimenting with watercolor almost 2 years ago now.
These smaller sizes will let me experiment more freely, mixing colors etc. I hope to have a post on those soon; I have 3 6×6’s in progress right now 🤞 😊
Working on this odd size gallery wrap canvas (12×24), and using just one dominant color + white for now, left me pondering how I felt about having a nearly solid sheet of one color hanging on a wall.
Combined with the texture I was able to evoke, and mostly keep, I think I’m also getting more clarification on my painting goals in general, and I hope to have a post on that equally soon, lol!
Gonna let it go with that for now – wishing all of us the best of holidays, the happiest safest and healthiest of times — yes, I know, that’ll be a challenge, but worth wishing for, for all of us 💕

Felipe, Could you prepare small amounts of paste with different colours ( or even tones of the same one) and apply each colour/tone of paste to get textures that also vary in colour/tone as well. Might try it myself.

Yes! For me it’s just a matter of 2 things to get to that point right now – 1) working my way through the more monochrome experiments on smaller pieces, some of which I’ve begun adding small amts of color variations (will have a post on that soon), plus 2) get or collect small plastic containers with good lids to make and store colors in. I’ve got less than a handful of containers I can use right now, so colors I’m using have to be fresh batches, and being acrylic, try to make only what I need for then. Yes, if you do give it a try be sure & show us, be fun! Thanks, Graham 😊

Graham, I just realized my post for today has sample pics of those smaller more color varied examples I was talking about in my 1st reply – https://felipeadanlerma.com/2021/12/14/december-14-2021-what-i-used-to-want-my-art-to-do-what-i-want-my-art-to-do-now/ 😊
