1st Cabin Light Finished Painting 2026

This whole process I’ve entered to recently is truly a mystery to me. What I’m hoping for in this process, I’m not really even sure at this point. What I do know is something is happening something creative that I’m really just beginning to understand.

Hopefully, as I continue, this process of creating more series like this, I’ll begin to understand if I’m simply only trying to discover things about myself, or am I also discovering things about the creative process that involves – well, I don’t really know. Variations of feeling – variations of seeing – variations of just blind creativity – I really don’t know.

That bothered me at first. Not knowing where I was going or why, but now I’m beginning, slowly, to let it happen, and try to let myself have the time, and openness, to see what it is that’s happening. Maybe it’s just simply the creative process itself. It’s, definitely not 60’s style tripping, lol! Experiencing and being grateful and happy with that. This is deeper, and safer, and more lasting, thank goodness 😊

There’s something in the linkage – linking process. But I can’t decide, or see, how much is creative process, expanding awareness, or maybe how much of each.

And maybe I don’t need to. And maybe it’d all change/evolve again anyways.

And maybe I won’t care after while.

Or maybe I will but I’ll be more patient with that tiny part of the universe that’s me. Yeah. And, I might get to like that. We’ll see 🤞 ❤️

Saturations of sky and earth roll and rest
spin like a first slow dance in junior high –
middle school the grandkids laugh and tell me
they think I make all this up just to be funny.
Maybe I do I grin to them
and they shift and shuffle their feet wondering
what that means, but then they look at my painting, again.
Wondering, again. Lost among the trails their own eyes make and find – hills to sky–sky to hills, with a sip of water in the cabin in between.
Then back outside under the moving sky
atop the rounding land beneath them
feeling the soft green blue earth
bringing them another pigment.
It must taste good ’cause the youngest one says,
“I’m hungry.”

I hope you’ve enjoyed this first of my painting series, this being 1st Cabin Light 2025-26.

My next series is already well underway, is based on one of my Vermont sunsets – vs sunrise, is based on one particular capture, but seems to encompass the many varying stages of observation over days, various years really, in a spot along the Island Line trail I really like – built to cross a portion of Lake Champlain, preferably on bike, to South Hero, an island in the lake just south of Canada.

ps Last Minute Note! – a terrific photographer on Twitter, Instagram & Substack, Richard Bernabe, recently posted about the unique value of photography. I found it extremely valuable for me, clarifying more clearly to my awareness, or attempted awareness 😊 as to why, now at 75 years old, I’m enjoying engaging with my own photography so much more now, by exploring painting series of work based on photos I feel a strong personal connection with.
