Joan Mitchell’s work has begun to appeal to me more and more, ever since I started reading Ninth Street Women (she’s of that time) and I haven’t even gotten to much about her in that book yet, lol!
Though I did do a reblog ’bout a short video of her work here – November 02, 2021 – Reblog/Review : “Low Water” by Joan Mitchell via #bofamasterpiecemoment at the Carnegie Museum of Art , which features a large work of hers with lots of white space – I mention the latter point because one of the videos via the Video Clips link I circled in the screenshot below also mentions that, and why it’s so effective in her work. Very interesting! 😊

I circled lots of features ’bout this page on The Art Story’s site ’cause there’s a lot of referred to information, in lots of formats – books, video, other websites and more.
Not being familiar with, or having heard of, The Art Story, I was very pleasantly surprised at how good a reference page and site this is!
The screenshot below is a long vertical capture. I wanted to also show the beginning of a list of thumbnail images featuring Joan’s work from various periods with links to more about the image featured, including some I really liked. But I’ll let you explore this wonderful site’s resources about this incredible artist 👩🎨

Here below is one of half a dozen quotes (though 2 of them may be the same quote) the site features.
“Abstract is not a style. I simply want to make a surface work. This is just a use of space and form: it’s an ambivalence of forms and space.”

Though I still don’t get carried away about some of her work, there’s a surprisingly good chunk I do! ❤️ Here’s a nice example —

But more surprising for me is, how much so many of her thoughts about art I really love!
I very highly recommend The Art Story’s Joan Mitchell page! 💕
