A few posts ago I announced about my art audition for an upcoming show at Austin local gallery, Art for the People, and mentioned I’d had a couple of my Impressionist Abstract panoramas chosen!

One, the red version, already had its sides painted, but the newer blue version didn’t, so I got to work right away. Like I tell folks who like hearing ’bout how I put these together, painting the sides almost always takes as long or longer than the painting!

Why?

Well, lol, when I work on the painting proper, the facing side, I’m pretty much in another world juggling feeling / intuition / design / and just plain what do I like ’bout how the painting’s coming along — but the sides! That requires fitting in the side design to the front facing piece.

Not like a canvas mirror print, but organically.

Not necessarily mirrored lines or shapes, colors or tones, but approximations of continuation.

But not “exact” continuation” – which would deflect from the front.

What I aim for is believable enhancement…

…one that takes you easily and gently, and most importantly, willingly…

to the face of painting.

Painted one side at a time to let the paint dry. But I think it’s worth it. Though I’m thinking through ways to entice the 8-nearly-9 year old to want to help do that job ❤️😊

I’ll be sure & let ya’ll know if & when that happens, lol!

Stay well everyone! 💕

  4. I didn’t realize you paint the sides of your canvas too, I do that also, it really seems to finish the painting! I met a woman at one of my shows and she said she had never seen anyone do that, which I thought was odd! 🤔

    1. I do some, esp the gallery wrapped ones, and also usually reluctantly, lol! But it almost always is worth painting those sides, since I’m “very” unlikely to frame them, esp the 1.5 inch deep gallery wraps! But gotta agree, the artist painted wrap adds so much dimension. I don’t try to mirror the sides of the front of the painting as much as kinda continue them, with changes in the intensity of the color and line and directions there of, which to me gives it more of being part of the whole painting, vs a partial mirror repeat. Well, that lady you met, NOW she knows and now she’ll see the difference of paintings without that, and she’ll remember you; that’s really nice, for her & you! 💕
