This’ll be a very short followup to yesterday’s intro post into my use of WordPress’s very useful “Related Posts” feature.
Short, btw because we here in Austin are in iced lock-down for several days, hardest freeze since we first moved here in the 80s – brrrrrr 😊 Bracing and protecting from a generational low teens / single digit cold here involves lots of stuff, and for my wife and I that mostly means staying off the roads much as possible!
Tomorrow I should have more pics and finish up on how, with my particular WordPress theme at least, to get my Related Posts block to look pretty much like what you see top of post – especially lots of pictures vs the same generic pic for all the posts listed.
The posts are dynamically chosen by the WordPress system based on tags and categories I use, so as I add posts, those featured “usually” change.
What I’ll point out today are the settings seen in draft or edit mode; ie, changes can be made during the draft creation and anytime after it’s posted. Nice!
One can choose, for one’s own reasons, not to show thumbnails, which vary in size bases on whether choose and odd or even number of posts to exhibit. In other words, and I’ll have more pics tomorrow, if I’d chosen 6 images, they’d all be small like the lower row. If I’d chosen 4, they’d all be big like the top row.
Display date didn’t occur to me to be important ’til I snapped to the fact I was constantly alerting folks to a relevant post from “way” back, like even 2011, when I first started my blog on WordPress 😊 So now I gladly include that info. For me, it says I have content across many years related to what I’m writing about now. The tweets in the pic below are all fairly recent, but that’s because the Tweets That Caught My Eye on Twitter series is fairly recent. One day, if I’m fortunate enough to still be around blogging ☺️ those dates’ll mean even more. Right now, those dates say, this is a fairly consistent series I like to post about!
And lastly, what I paid least attention to of the three til very recently, the context (tag or category) that particular post is featured within. That is what determines if a particular post is even considered for featuring. And it is the combination of the original post’s tag or category and the current post’s tag or category (or multiples of either), that determine whether this is a “Related Post.”
However – what I see in this screenshot, is not necessarily what I’ll see in the live post, vs a generic image for each post in the live post.
Tomorrow I’ll show how I solved that problem. And honestly, I don’t know if this is particular to one of at least two reasons I know of as affecting things I do on WordPress, ie, my WordPress theme, and using an iPad (an older one at that). And that’s for another day, lol!
The “Advanced” option bottom right in the screen shot is something beyond me. Sometimes the WordPress rep will place some code there to help solve a problem for me, but that’s as far as I’ll be going with that for a “long” time 😊

So why is this important to me anyway? (I’m hearing this said the way my wife and I have heard New Zealand actors on AcornTV enunciate 😊)
Well, I like working my blog. I like getting visitors. And I really like feeling I have some impact, however small, sharing my art and ideas about health and aging, and how I’m often surprised how intertwined the two are. Really.
Okay, I’m hearing our soon to be eight year old grandson say, “So how do I know that?” — ie, if what I’m doing is working or not? (btw, the soon to be 8 yr old is contemplating creating his 1st YouTube video; true! 😏 )
Answer, number of visitors of course. But equally important to me, especially in regard to if the Related Posts feature is successfully inviting folks to visit other of my related posts – my Visitors/Views comparison-count in my stats!
As WordPress puts it —
A visitor can view more than one page, or view a page on your site more than once.
WordPress
So, I think that wraps me up for today. Temps are dropping outside, wife and and I want something warm to drink (hot tea?), and I’m hungry, lol!
Take care everyone! Stay warm! ❤️
