A reader recently commented they looked forward to seeing how I’d sign this new work, there being 4 panels 😊
This part of my signing, and the post about it, is the easier for me to do 1st because this is how I’ve signed the back of each of the 4 polyptych pieces. Signing the front of each one ( yes, lol! each one! ) will be much more involved and less straightforward, at least how I’m currently contemplating signing each panel, within the full polyptych.
Yeah, more than a little nervous ’bout it, even though I have signed both my art work and my photography with the image. A good example of the latter is Time at the Musee d’Orsay ( 26K views at this time ), where I signed along the rim of the large clock in the converted-now-museum train station.
To me, signing digitally is “much” easier than signing in pigment. In contrast, I feel there’s much less room for error signing a painting. Might just be me, but definitely feel the pressure difference!
Still, I Googled how to sign multiple panels ( polyptychs ) and felt these suggestions ( among many ), via an Art Business Info site article, would work best for me —
- Number each panel
- Sign each panel
- Date the work
- Include the Title
In this case, signing the back, I included both my “written” name I go by – Adan – and my full printed name, Felipe Adan Lerma.
I don’t have any super special reason for doing this, but felt good doing it this way 😊

Also important, to prevent-bleed through to the front of the canvas, I spread a thin but nice coat of matte gel onto the part of the back of the canvas I intend to write.
Preferably I should also put another clear coat on my sig & other info to prevent it wearing away etc. We won’t go into the “etc” here 😊

Oh, and might be able to tell, by my handwriting, how difficult writing / painting my signature might be for me, lol! And I do prefer signing vs a stamp or such. Just my preference, no judgment intended. Though you might get an indication as to why / how my brush work might “appear” so creative, lol! Just the jiggle and wiggle of my hands 🙏 😊 ❤️
Stay well everyone! Stay curious! 💕
Adan
ps – oops, special kudos and thanks to the now-9 year old for his help ☺️
