The Inevitability of No
Watching
the newest grandchild
squirm, learning to roll –
tiny
reminders
of my own forgotten
but very felt past –
I realized where it had begun.
When the sweet yeses and kisses and
loving held caresses – all encouragements,
all the “yes you cans”
to smile to eat to poop to move
to see
met their first no.
The new grand baby, still a baby
rolled
to his back, and back again, laughing.
It’s so cute! The learning, the
doing.
But soon, he’ll roll twice, thrice
feeling his body propel him
with only yeses in his path
and that’s when it will
happen.
He’ll hear his first..no.
Or he’ll never
know
how to keep living
and laughing.

Watching the newest grand child pass his fourth month and really begin to start moving, inspired me to write this little poem.
He’s just showed with tons of positive emotions and words and looks and sounds, and I for one, am thrilled to see such good things press into this young being from the start.
But I know one day he’ll have to revolt, even if just a bit, and I wondered where he, and really myself and all the rest of us, if we were/are showered with such love, could come to view our parents or others as “hindering” us. Where did that come from?
I’d always assumed it was just a genetic biological human necessary thing, and probably still is.
But where was the first genesis?
And it finally came to me, watching young Max begin to arch and twist his strong little back and flip himself over – protection from what we don’t even know.
The challenge, it seems, for parents and grandparents then, is where and how to balance that necessary no, with that even more needed and vital, yes….
After all, I believe, yes is our main course of direction, and no is the bumper guards along the way. 🙂
Happy summer everyone. 🙂
