When I say favorite, I of course mean of my own. 😉

Rendezvous, at Place Saint-Michel” is one of several short stories I am both, particularly proud of and enjoy tremendously.

Reasons for this scatter among the labels of technical and story content.

Technical

I start with technical rather than “story” only because, in this case, they’re so tightly woven into each other, it’s only arbitrarily that I differentiate them.

Using a 3rd person omniscient POV, I try to present three grandchildren with their grandfather, out into the Paris night for a rare chance to take pictures.

The challenge was to smoothly and convincingly transition between the four characters.

Adding to the challenge is the age range differences: Zilker 9, Tabitha 11, Cherise 16, and Arturo – early 60s.

Being a short story, the transitions needed to be within one continuous narrative, without chapters and notated section breaks.

Though I often use this technique in my longer work as well, of a multiple point-of-view, in this particular story, with a reduced number of characters (I usually feature all six cousins together, though not always, often with two or more adults) I’m able to give more “screen” time to each character.

I feel I have fairly smoothly provided the interior life and exterior action from character to character and between them as well.  And carried the story along with it.

Story

Paris is special anytime.  But especially at night.

Beautiful images are captured, but so are some wonderful memories for the four characters.

Arturo, the grandfather, is taking the youngest child, Zilker, who likes to take pictures with a small compact, out one evening to find and capture images of Paris.  Two of the female cousins on vacation with them, Tabitha and Cherise, go along with them.

Zilker happens to take a picture at a subway entrance at Place Saint-Michel that captures a young couple kissing in the veiled darkness.  Wanting to compose the same type of image again, framed with a more interesting background, Cherise is enlisted to help “re-create” the image.

This small night adventure in Paris, has meaning for each person from the family on the outing.

Using the third person omniscient point of view helps complete the story.

This story, like the other short stories in “Paris Shorts Vol 1”, is set within the time frame of the seven novellas making up “Slumming in Paris, With the Children – Parts 2-8.”  The preceding link lists all the volumes and the chapter titles.
