About My Product Reviews

In general, like my movie & TV reviews, I don’t do negative reviews. However, since these are products I personally use, I may mention or review products that don’t fit their apparent purpose.

Generally, I think it’s more productive to steer folks toward stuff I like or thought was really good (sometimes that’s the same thing, sometimes not quite 😊)

I do often say what might/could be better, or I’d rather’ve seen or experienced, but in the context of why I liked the product enough to buy or try it.

Thanks everyone – Adan

My review title is —
Living Up to its promise! Watercolor like results with acrylics.

I’ve only recently purchased Golden’s Absorbent Ground (for watercolors or acrylics) and have applied it various ways on four small 6×6 gallery wrap canvases – a heavy unwetted layer, multiple wetted layers, horizontally – vertically – diagonally, and am finding very pleasing surprises and results. I’d painted both acrylics and (water soluble) oils the last 40+ years, mostly straight out of the tube, then recently with a few mediums, and was never able to get the water-flowing watercolor like effects the absorbent ground is giving me. I tested my same technique on a black gessoed 6×6 to see if maybe it was really all just my changed application of adding wash-levels of water, but it wasn’t. The Absorbent Ground, esp with two or more layers 1st wetting the canvas and my brush, gives remarkable results. I’ve believe I’ve only just begun experimenting what I’ll be able to do. I hope 😊Word of caution, go to the Golden site for specific info re non-use of oils, preserving the surface w/out glass, etc. They even have a phone # to call.

My recent post, My Day Ahead – Dec 30, 2019 : A Word About My New Absorbent Ground Acrylic Paintings In-Progress, gives an idea of my early experimenting with this amazing product.

So far, I’m very pleased with the visual results. Plus, by being able to work on canvas, I don’t have to worry about the fragility of paper, and, if I use a gallery wrap canvas, even a frame!

I’ve even just the last few days, gotten a couple of tubes of actual watercolor paint, and am in beginning stages of learning how to use both it and acrylics together. It’ll be very interesting to see how that fully works out over time. My very 1st initial test of the two, on one of my small 6x6s, gives me the sense of some beautiful possibilities! 💕

This is a look at it before final touches, a clear isolation layer, and varnishing —

    • Tatiana, thanks! The lighthouse is from an old photo of mine of one of the two replica lighthouses on Lake Champlain on the breakwater by Burlington VT, my wife’s hometown 😊 Not sure what parts are too much, sorry; but I do like to add info some folks seem to like having. I appreciate the feedback though, sincerely 😊
