Just back from an incredible trip to the Galapagos west of Ecuador, wife & I got the opportunity to have the youngest grandchild over. This is from our mid-morning walk in warm dappled light ❤️
I only wish I’d realized the value of this with our own children more fully…
But learning that now is better than staying dumb —
And losing out even more 💕
This is probably even true w/other loves in our lives; like for me – art.
There were years I wandered about, hopefully absorbing feelings of images in my life that meant or have come to mean a great deal to me, either directly, symbolically, or even of memories carrying messages I wasn’t even aware of at the time – like is the case with my fascination with dappled light, light on this shot of Max & Sheila.
Dappled light of course needs nothing special to be pretty, attractive, attention getting.
And I’ve left it at that for many years, decades really, not even aware that was a prime ingredient in my love of early Renoir, his figures dancing / embracing underneath towering trees, or Monet’s splashes of dapple-lit paint – shadow and light co-mingling like close knit disparate siblings.
I mention to Sheila, somewhat casually, a few weeks ago, as I became aware of it, that dappled light under towering trees is what I grew up with in and near the old Memorial Park area of Houston, when homes sported as many and as tall of trees as in the park, even if more rustic and less manicured as in the park across from St. Theresa’s church.
Carefree moments, still relatively unaware of poverty or crime, of hatred and divisions (my parents always told us here were good people and bad people, but never any color of people) – so I remained color blind until the issue was forced on me, mostly socially vs personally, though I remained ignorant of the subtleties of the latter also for even longer.
So I grew up sheltered under speckled dappled light.
Protected, preserved even.
So when Max and Sheila had walked past this spot along the walk, I asked them to go back and stand and/or walk through that spot again, and Max, eyes big, asked, “Why?”
And I showed him the picture after, and said,
“See, how the light plays on you and Grandma?”
And he smiled 😊
Stay well everyone! Austin’s on the verge of re-entering Stage 5 of Covid hospitalizations and deaths.
Keep your light one, keep alert, and wear a mask if in any doubt ♥️
