I came across this term just recently, something I’d never even heard any inkling of – Lyrical Abstraction, and the tiny bit I’m coming across is intriguing me — not because of some earth shattering revelations about the style per se, nor, because the term has been around for decades and has seemingly been hidden in plain sight from my perception of it in all my searches about art — but because it describes so much of what I’d like my art to be, and very well may have been since my 1st abstracts with acrylics from the start of the 1980s – something to do with something that rings true to me – my intent in my work, my assumed nearly unconscious hardly-thought-out desire to create work that uplifts, vs discusses. Emotional vs detached reason or idea. And my readers know I love writing ’bout ideas and purposes, esp regarding our communal world health, and even more so, democracy and what I think that means for all of us. But my art is visual. And I’m comfortable with thinking it intuitive, even aspirational. But unconscious? Or emotional? Seems more and more I’ve some things to come to terms with, lol!
I’m listing a few links below, and will work on this more in depth for my next post, as a direct follow up post. I’ve spent the day framing and wiring and preparing work to deliver to the Old Bakery in a few days, plus finishing up several pieces to show as an audition at Art for the People for a possible group show later this month. Plus we got to have the 8 year old overnight for the 1st time in several weeks ’cause of all the holiday stuff, lol!
Not complaining ’bout all that, just plain old tired, in a good way ☺️
So anyway, if you wanna explore the concept of lyrical abstraction, or its history or imagery – here’s some links I’m liking so far. My header image above, tentatively titled “Fantasy Landscape“, which I could only describe as being abstract impressionist when I used it in my previous post, is, I think, a fairly good example of a range of art that fits the concept of lyrical abstraction. I might change my mind ’bout that as I learn more, but what the heck, what’s the point of being an artist if one can’t, at least on rare occasions, get into a self-tussle over terms, art terms that is 😊
