The Old American Artist, a Love Story

***

Pictured, “The Old American Artist, a Love Story

A romance and an artist’s story, how could it not be a love story? ;-)

We all love a story that shows how a loving pair, meeting obstacles in life, overcome that challenge, and resolve to love each other.  But what happens during the “lived happily ever after” part?  What are the details, what might the process be, achieving and living that post-crisis life?

This arc, from boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy regains girl, morphs, in this first of three books, in the trilogy Triptych, into that fuller story of life, and love.

Yoga, Sports, and My Writing

it’s no secret that activity in a sports, and i include yoga within this thought, induces or re-enforces a psychological similarity in the person participating

a fluid sport like ice skating can mirror fluid thoughts and feelings

smash-tooth hockey, well… ;-)

though i believe in challenging oneself, whether in sports yoga or writing, i also have an affinity for both recovery and interval training -

ie, there are times to ease up, maybe continuing at a slower or less intense pace -

and there are times for alternating intensities, which, according to various fitness literature, produces more natural life-active results, ie, we go through life having to stop/start, go slow then fast, more so than in a steady state machine like pace -

we are more like the weather, i believe, than a bed of rocks ;-)

i especially like most yoga because it allows me to monitor and pace myself more to my own awareness and perception, than to a regimen

all of this is i believe, reflected in both my poetry, my paintings, and my renewed interest in my fiction work

i like to alternate differing feelings moods and locales -

and i like to alternate scenes and times -

the trick, or art really, for me, is, in fiction, tying these varying swings into a narrative flow that entertains and has meaning

but then, that’s what’s happening inside me when following a fitness program too ;-)

***

MindBodyGreen

one of my favorite sites that is very close to how i feel about yoga, and most human activity, is posted daily at mindbodygreen

they have a lot of short pieces which are easy to read, pictures with captions, longer more involved pieces, quotes from people that range from the dalai lama to movie stars -

and yet, their postings consistently say that the guru and answers are within each person

that only each one of us can, in our fitness efforts, and thus i believe, our creative efforts, ultimately, decide how hard to push, how much to let up, how much to experiment, and how much to stay steady

do we then need to read or listen to other ideas? sure, why not, if we want to -

but we decide for ourselves whether to participate in a class, read a book or poem, see a movie, or create in a certain style for a particular reason at a particular time

one of the greatest objections to freedom is, we have to decide what to do ;-) and risk turmoil

it is also, i sincerely, believe, one of freedom’s greatest assets….

U.S. Copyright Office

should you register your copyright with the library of congress?

i am not an attorney, so i am placing this information as part of your own due diligence in how much you might wish to protect your creative works

i’ve just recently, before the epublication of “The Old American Artist, a Love Story” submitted my novella to the U.S. Library of Congress for registration online -

considering what it took my wife and i, back in ’81, to copy, page by page, a hand typed manuscript of several hundred words, to send by certified mail to the same folk, this was easy  ;-)

of course i’ll rescind or amend that feeling if my registration goes hay-wire or amiss ;-)

have your credit card or bank info handy, and use either internet explorer or firefox, the other browsers (of which i tried using) won’t work with the library of congress’ interface quite right yet

$35 a hit can add up, but one can copyright “collections” -

lots of good info is on the library of congress site, plus they have both a toll-free and area-code phone number you can call and talk with a live person, which is what saved me ;-)

“Wow!” I said, totally sincere.  ”You know everything I’ve done wrong, and where to go on the browser to fix it.”

“I should,” he chuckled, “I do this all day.  Glad to help.”

true dialog, subject to memory adjustments and feeling good about how it came out ;-)

best wishes, whichever way you decide to go with your creative works!

Last Thoughts About Using Poetry For My Fiction

a final word about something that came to me earlier today about the usefulness of poetry for someone writing fiction

for myself, of course, it tends to be an extension

but the thing i realized that would be useful, even as just an exercise, is producing short tight focussed poems on varying themes, images, emotions, connections, people, just about anything

today, dVersePoets has a prompt, “poetics: whatever the weather” that stu mcpherson, the host, proposes :

For this week’s prompt write a poem about that uses the weather metaphorically to express an emotion or feeling. Here are some examples…

lots of examples are provided, and poets can respond as they are able and wish -

immediately below, is my small contribution written today,

“The Weather Inside Me”

i

like to let

my inner weather mirror

what’s happening outside

partly

just to connect

with nature and bigger

things than me

mostly

because i grew up in texas

and if you fought the heat

dew points and humidity

one

would find themselves

akin

to dinosaurs resisting

the glacial slowing

of their time

besides

i hear the news

el nino

is

rebirthing

*

in anticipation

i’ll definitely need to cool it….

© 2012 felipe adan lerma

doing these small exercises, on one’s own, or with a group, can hone our skills applied within scenes in a larger fictional piece -

and, most the time ;-) they’re fun

So, Is “The Old American Artist, a Love Story” a Romance?

and finally, the question needs to be asked, or at least need to ask myself the question, is “the old american artist, a love story” a romance?

i sincerely believe, with the new information i’ve learned and shared in this seven part series, that it is

i also believe the second novella “rosetta” in the trilogy, Triptych, is a romance…

now the third book, “the children,” hmmm, i don’t know ;-) yet ;-)

i’ll leave with a mention of another site i came across, who also references Romance Writers of America, with info about categories of romances, “A Brief Overview of Popular Romance Sub-Genres,” Suite 101

they begin by saying,

For every romance reader, there is a sub-genre of romance fiction offered to enchant and enthrall. But before deciding on what to read, it is important to know what is available.

from what i can tell, my new fiction probably fits into contemporary romance -

though i wouldn’t doubt there’s also a cross genre element since the artist’s life in the story, as an artist, is equally important ;-)

if you get to read my book, please let me know what you thought

i can be reached on twitter, facebook, and at yoga dot adan at gmail dot com

thanks so much for your time and best wishes in your reading adventures ;-)

The Value of My Poetry for My Writing Fiction

the majority of my work that’s available in ebook form is poetry, so obviously i find poetry to be a great stand-alone art form for me

what i hadn’t expected, was, in writing my first fiction in some many years, how much my poetry writing has influenced not just my style and way of expressing thing, but how i wanted to structure my scenes

in part three linked above, i indicated how i have used a sorta-cinematic scene cutting between chapters, and that most of my chapters are relatively short -

and actually, my chapters are also quite varied within the framework that they are also somewhat short, with only a few much longer chapters

except for a few poems, such as “when it ended” which is in my sampler book linked to in part two above, and also posted on my site with commentary, most of my poetry is short -

most of my poetry from the 90s were one page poems, written to fit on one page, so my wife and i could print and personalize them for folk at mall and art shows!

in my new fiction, i tended to want to capture moments and moods, and recollections and flashbacks, in somewhat the same way -

when i applied this approach to my new novella, it suggested itself as being cinematic to me, reminding me of how scenes in time and action cut back and forth -

poetry, it turns out, is the primary structural and narrative flow creator in my current fiction ;-)

i wouldn’t've ever guessed it to begin with ;-)

but it feels exactly right, for me…

dVersePoets

in the previous postings in this series, i’ve tried mentioning a site i enjoy visiting that demos or showcases some aspect of that posting; this time around it’s about poetry

a site i’ve found i like for encouraging a person of any writing level and experience to write poetry, is dVersePoets

they present several opportunities each week (no entry fee required) for any person to post a poem and create a link that other participating poets (writing or just reading) can see and thus have interested people see your work

the atmosphere is non-threatening and non-judgmental, and the range of styles and interests represented is incredibly “dverse” ;-)

i am able to contribute any time i am able, and i can of course enjoy reading any time -

for instance, in a regular feature, “what’s the buzz,” hosted most recently by charles, a poet who goes by the moniker, the chazinator, he wrote, for his poet’s prompt,

Welcome back to dVersePoets, poets and friends! I’m Chazinator and I’ll be your host again. Today, I’d like to look at the way modern poets attempt to confront the realities of everyday life. To do that we’ll consider how some poets expand the reach of poetry by incorporating non-poetic material into their work.

also, in another weekly feature, there is an openlinknight, where one can post with most any style and theme; it is described as,

OpenLinkNight - is our large gathering where you link any poem you would like. This is a great place to meet and hear new voices. OLN opens at 3 pm EST on Tuesdays.

these have been great opportunities for me to either read an interesting prompt and history about poetry, write my own poem, or both -

i hope you get the time to check this very helpful and enjoyable site out ;-)

i hope you enjoy the four chapter sequence, thank you much ;-)

Arturo was staring at a small ridge of blue-green paint, pondering how a touch of highlight might enhance the spot, when he became aware of knocking at the door.  Keeping the brush ready in his fingers, he found his way to the front door, visualizing the area he had been working on and opened the door.  A rectangle entrance cut the dark inside, flooding night to day.

Sunlight showered his vista of Anna, the young neighbor girl, pale in her shorts with an equally pale blue top against the flood of sky and brownish earth beyond her.

“Hi Señor Arturo,” she smiled, a sparkly gap in her grin to match the twinkle in her dark eyes.  “The mailman gave us your mail!”  She laughed, obviously delighted with the idea.

“Thank you Anna,” Arturo spoke softly, slowly, trying to remember how he had thought he would like that ridge of paint touched with paint.  Two dots of shade? Or a thin fading highlight line?

“Señor Arturo, your mail!”

The envelope dwarfed her hand and he forced himself to focus a smile on her, taking the envelope.  She slapped her small hands on the sides of her thighs.

“Mamma says you can come eat with us,” she said, her eyes wide for an answer, motioning to her mother, Nicoletta, standing further back nearer the road.

His smile, relaxed on his unshaven face, Arturo nodded yes to them both, rubbing his belly.  Anna liked that, doing releve´s on her toes.  “Ahh, but tell your momma I have a show tonight,” he remembered.

She stopped, on tip-toe, listening.

Arturo pointed up beyond the road toward the hill and beyond.  “In town.  Pictures,” he mimicked painting with his brush in his hand.

“Paintings, paintings!  Like mine?”  Anna swirled side to side still on her toes, dancing to the conversation.  He had given her, and her family, several pieces they had liked, when he and Rosetta had first moved here, after Anna’s parents had introduced themselves, bringing him and Rosetta steaming bowls of fresh fish mixed with cut vegetables.  The memory brought him a sad happiness, not yet knowing if he and Rosetta would stay.

“Yes.  Very much,” he smiled to Anna, glad he could make her so happy so easily.

Anna pranced, arms alternating up into the air in pure play, unaware how beautifully she danced.  “I’ll tell mamma.  Goodbye Señor Arturo,” she smiled and was gone, running to her mother.

“Goodbye Anna,” said Arturo, waving to Nicoletta, waiting uphill.

The paintings for the show that night, he thought, were similar to those he had given them, though with a twist they had only recently seen, and knew they had liked.

The painting surface he had left inside, which direction it would show still undetermined, met him with feigned impatience.  But Arturo knew the surface would wait as long as needed.

The art, his art, always did.

He glanced quickly to the spot he had left, nicked the flat edge of the brush with a trace of titanium white, a dot of cobalt blue, and dashed the line along and over and to the back of the raised ridge of dry paint, and the three foot by four foot surface of canvas joined in one expanse of landscape for the eye.

Arturo felt the quick involuntary intake of breathe and accepted it.

He was done with this piece for today.

Autobiographical Elements

Intro, Why Copying Exactly From Life is Unnecessary

on the one hand, how can anything anyone creates not have some  elements of that person’s life?  ie, thoughts, convictions, hopes, life experiences, etc?

on the other, writing fiction that would best be labeled autobiography, is not for me

many many things in my work, including in my new novella, is based on memories of things and people i’ve experienced and known -

but, i don’t have to copy the person or event to make it meaningful for me in a work of fiction

copying the event or person would actually feel inhibiting

i want to be able to embellish, exaggerate, minimize, spotlight, and generalize, in any way i want to create an enjoyable read for someone  (i feel and paint in the same manner in regard to my art work)

What Part Is Important for Me to Copy from Real Life

what i have discovered, or realized, is that if a person or event has made enough of an impact on me to want to fictionalize in a story, or dramatize in a poem, and  i am not specifically saying that the event or person is someone i am clearly identifying, ie, a parent poem to my dad or mom, a poem to my wife, then what is important for me, is to extract the deepest essence of that person’s or event’s impact on me -

example :

real life : i might be walking down the street and come across an emergency, say, a kid falls out of a tree as i walk by, a la a scene in “Groundhog Day” and i go to help and (unlike “Groundhog Day”) some adult rushes out and curses me out for helping what he or she is now calling a good for nothing kid best left to rot on the pavement

real life adult in above scene : short, bald (oh, that might be me ;-) ) and moving quickly for being so overweight

fiction : i’m riding a bike down a dirt path in a public park and a large but old dog falls out from a tree onto the path, i hesitate, wondering if the dog is safe to go help, and the dog’s owner appears, cursing me for not helping, and the dog for being stupid and not minding

fiction adult in above scene : thin, mid-height, limps

*

the issues of shock and confusion over being expected to react as if i had a script on a tv show, and blaming the boy or dog beyond concern for injuries and needing help, are what are important to me in this very made up scenario -

it wasn’t hard to invent differing actors in the scene to play a similar script -

changing the elements in reality to fiction, i can add or diminish the degree of pathos, or even add humor, if i wanted to be inventive enough and it feels right

*

for folk who write a lot, the example above is old stuff, but i hope potential readers and new writers may see some of my own creative process, and thus encourage them to try their own flavor of fictional or poetic work, with elements of their own lives

In This Novella

much like arturo, the male protagonist in “the old american artist, a love story,” i feel a need to ground myself in the world i experience to create work that is satisfying for me -

the most important part of that experience, for my fiction and poetry, is my internal world -

that’s the scaffolding and framework that rebuilds a new life…

in fiction ;-) and maybe, even in real life ;-)

***

RG2E, WG2E

yesterday i mentioned a writer i like to follow for info on his interesting experiments in epublishing, and for his creative work style -

today i’d like to list another source i also look at regularly when they post, even if it’s a few days to even a week after i get the email notification, the article’s tab staying nicely in view on my browser til time and timing permit ;-)

the first acronym is for Readers Guide to ePublishing, and the latter is for Writers Guide to ePublishing

though i mostly follow wg2e, i’m finding rg2e interesting for what shows up, especially  in the field of romantic fiction, but many others writing areas are embraced, including poetry

wg2e, Writers Guide to ePublishing, has a large group of participating active writers sharing sales info plus marketing and formatting techniques

many of the contributors are trying things i had never thought or heard of, kindle bubble parties on the kindle fire, getting set up and using the kindleboards, and ho-down book release parties set in locations featured or similar to that in the book being promoted

i would highly recommend at least a look ;-) there’s much more!

“Rosetta.”

Arturo savored the syllables softly and and said it again slowly.

“Rosetta…like the rosetta stone.”  His voice sounded the words with the weight of light precious rocks, then quickly added,  “not the language company, but the….”

“Yes,” Rosetta glanced quickly to Arturo, then back to her meal.  It was their second lunch date.  And there was no need to hurry both hungers.  “A lot of people tell me that.”

Arturo, at the tender turning age of twenty-nine, half impetuous, half matured, paused, but still rushed inside himself to find his reply.  Though they had just met that week, he liked the glint and glimmer in her eye.  He feared losing momentum.  As with his art, he feared letting his paint dry when it still needed blending, most especially when the image in his mind fit the feeling in his heart.  The solution, he had often found, was to press on.  Dab the canvas.

“I bet.”

Nope, he thought, too little.  He could see it in her eyes, the dash of disappointment.  “You know,” he pressed again, crossing his feet, leaning forward, squeezing his thoughts out, “it’s because people see you as special.”  Yes! he thought, he saw a glint of approval.

But she wanted more.

“Special?  How?”

“Well, I…”

“How’s the rosetta stone special?  What’s so special about it?”  She seemed to wish she had more food to cut, or something to butter.  But all was about eaten now.  The bits left were getting cold.  “I mean, I’ve heard of the rosetta stone, I just don’t know why it’s so important.  No one’s been able to tell me for sure,” and her fork clattered to the nearly empty plate drawing quick looks from the table nearby and both Arturo and Rosetta burst out laughing.

Arturo leaned forward a few more inches, closing off their conversation from those around them, and Rosetta smiled, grateful for his touch of awareness.

“I really don’t know,” and Arturo’s smile spread as Rosetta’s eyes widened, surprised.  “Maybe we can explore that together.  Go to the library.”

The breath between them was very still.

“Galveston has a real old library that’s kinda fun to use,” he said quietly.

“We have an old one in Vermont where I grew up too.”

Their breath stirred.

“Vermont?  Is that north of Dallas?”

Rosetta hesitated.  “Well, yes, it’s actually a state….”

Arturo burst out laughing, again drawing looks from the quiet couple nearby.

Lowering his voice, he said, “I’m just kidding.  I know where Vermont is.  On a map anyways,” and grinned.

“You do? Really?  A lot of people here in Texas never heard of it.”

A sad thought passed through Arturo.  Even now, in the early 80s, nearly the end of the twentieth century, he knew this was true.  Many people still knew little beyond where they lived, including himself, he thought.  Setting his eyes with serious softness on hers, he smiled a tiny smile, and knowing he knew her, said, “I believe you.”

Their awkwardness, he sensed, had eased, each with tiny smiles, like a great painting begun.

Structure of My Novella

there are two dominant structural threads from my point of view

i say from my pov, because someone who knows much more than i do about structure, may recognize other things going on too, but for now, i’ll go with the two i consciously worked with

the two are the scene shifts and the time threads -

they are of course inter-related in the story, merging toward the end

“most” of my scenes in this book are relatively short, almost cinematic, with a few longer episodes placed as warranted by the feel of the narrative as i felt it as i wrote and re-wrote

there are two dominant time threads going simultaneously through-out until they merge close to the end of the novella (some might call this a short novel)

a bit more on this is explained in the product description section in the listing for my book

the sequence of the four chapter samples i began posting yesterday from “the old american artist, a love story” and that continues today and for two more days, is very characteristic of the work as a whole -

it made my writing much more interesting for me, and hope it does the same for the reader ;-)

Matthew Iden, Writer

i would be very remiss if i didn’t mention one of the writers blogging today, among several, who has influenced my decision to continue working at my fiction writing, along with my poetry and images -

matthew writes in genres that are not my personal preference, but the shorts i’ve read that he’s written, are compelling in story, and imaginative in their clarity of scene

for any style writer, i feel he also provides information on experiments he has tried with places like librarything, among several writers’ outlets -

and has most recently posted, as part of his new “Tip Tuesday” series, information he has compiled, a resource list of associations useful for writers, and discusses why he thinks they could be of help

i would recommend him for both information on writing and for entertaining material to read

***

immediately below is my second sample, chapter two, from my new novella

i hope you enjoy the four chapter sequence, thank you much ;-)

Coming inside the converted fisherman’s hut, old wooden shelving across from the expanses of windows facing the sea, was nearly like stepping under a wide high umbrella outside on the beach, at least like those nearer the big hotel by the sea in town.

Coolness was instant, while the eyes slowly dilated.

Arturo hummed quietly, as if to soothe the slowly lifting darkness.

Canvases, like floating cubes and rectangles, dimly reflected the morning light filtering the stretch of rooms.  The weave of the linen and rough cotton canvases caught sparkles like sea spray catching moonlight.

These were the moments Arturo felt a visitor to his own work.

Walking slowly, the old wood plank floor creaking gently, he passed between two large easels and paintings, like an old ship gliding gently on slippery thin water between rocks of the unknown.  He resisted turning or looking back yet for a peek, allowing his concentration to focus further into the dawning light in the bank of windows.  Faintly he heard the murmur of the sea, the waves’ lips whispering tales of other lands.  He had heard those same whispers in Galveston, and Vermont, about other lands, on other sides of the world’s waters.  And now was standing, he realized, on the other side of those whispers.  He imagined hearing the voices of growing children.  His own voice.  Rosetta’s smile.

Arturo cracked open the window an inch, the morning breeze still too cool, too swift, for his comfort, and let the wind’s whispers speak light whistles.

With that, he turned to face his work.

Thirty by forty inch gallery wrapped linen panels, one angled each side in front of him, made Arturo take slow full breaths of his seaside air.

Layered over days, weeks, and now a month each, the slow rising morning light looked to be waking the pigments lying deep within the brush-stabbed dab-dashed ocean like waves of color.

By noon, the colors would be singing.

And by evening, the light absorption, and reflection, would pause at the surface once more.

His painting remained static in color and feel, only in photos.  The broken surface and uneven layering reflected and revealed differing light throughout the day.  The image itself, when nearly done, Arturo had always felt, lived in the light.

With another deep, yet stuttering breath, like a child finally released from its anguish, finally resting in a remembered unborn state, Arturo stepped unaware, closing the distance to his paintings.

Natural light glistened off the ridges of paint.  In the valleys.  Along the waves of pigment.

And Arturo saw where he wanted to add hints of shadow, eye-winks of highlight.

A strong slow breath told Arturo he was ready to paint.

Art and Yoga

 Awake

in an image dream

the cerulean blue sky

cracks hair-lines

letting whispers of ancient rules

speak to my surprise.

Fat over lean

i’d heard

say.

But scumble on over

the new water based oils

had said in pinks inside

bright teals

set in green-blue shades of

longing.

What

did I know?

I’d breathed the truth

and wanted to push it into

pigment.

Layered layers.

With peek-a-boo ridges

of the past.

Colors

who’d laid down their

binders for me.

I didn’t know

that

was my edge

I’d followed and fallen down

from.

Though

I do now.

Those hairline cracks upon my canvas

and that curling rising ridge

upon my edge

are

smiling at me now.

I don’t know

why.

But that’s ok.

It’s art I am I’m making.

New Website – http://www.adanlerma.com is now : http://www.yoga-adan.com

Long time artist writer and fitness enthusiast Adan Lerma, has moved his website, http://www.adanlerma.com to http://www.yoga-adan.com

WEBWIRE – Wednesday, September 07, 2011

yoga-adan is the new website name for long time artist, writer, and fitness enthusiast, Adan Lerma.

“My new website’s mission statement is: INTEGRATING YOGA FITNESS AND THE ARTS.  It’s what I needed to make sense of decades of interest in the arts and fitness,” explains blog owner Adan.

“My wife, Sheila, and myself, found it at first helpful, then absorbing, to study, then become certified in fitness studies through AFAA,” continues Adan.  ”From those studies, I realized issues that led me to an enhanced yoga practice.  Yoga has given me a stronger sense of connectedness that made me realize, I needed to, and could, integrate my life long interests in the arts and fitness.”

“A good example would be my poem, “Cross Country

Yoga, fitness, and arts related articles are posted steadily.

Poetry, photography, paintings, music, and dance, are also discussed; often in relation to some aspect in yoga and fitness.

Category tags on the articles make it easy for anyone to browse a topic of interest.

Poetry work, for example, is found via its own category : arts/poetry/

Primary posts on yoga and fitness are located in the category foundation-posts/

An example, Adan says, of a well received article on yoga, fitness, and the arts, is Nice Thing ’bout Getting Old(er) — My Yoga-to-Dance aha! Moments! – # 5

Additionally, the right side column of each page has several menu lists to choose from, while the header provides links to classes and more.

A new header tab leads to future information on in-development poetry eBooks.  Further information on this new feature is promised,  ”I think the content, and extra materials will be useful, and of great interest,” smiles Adan.

Final Thoughts

reposting one’s press releases is something i used to do on my old art website, mainly just to have a record of them, and it turns out, as per reading i’ve done lately, this is a good idea anyways

i do have a media room now, with info and links to the original press releases, but evidently this is a good thing to have too

like a lot of things in life, probably a good idea to have a backup ;-)

If you are a person who likes to simply find and shoot a nice image, this ebook will definitely appeal. ;-)

Among the basics, are :

my first choice was to present another cluster combination

but the sight of this lone white onion flower, well ;-)

a swipe of the sharpening tool was all i used

*

the delicacy of the light’s shading, and the tints shimmering within the shades, both mirroring the gradations of light and dark among the background shadows, gives me a sense of continuity, even with the isolation in the foreground of the white coiled flower

it’s as if the bulb were whispering to the figure-like cross of green to its right

colors and shapes! yes, nature is a beauty…

*

we’d moved from galveston to austin at the start of the new century, and by summer 2000, we were in an older house near downtown, and in the northwest corner of the long backyard, these onions grew wild, coming out in the early fall, after the heat had left for awhile

people would tell me to mow them down with the grass, but i liked them too much

they were hardy, and they were pretty

i wanted to kinda honor them

pictures can do that ;-)

Final Thoughts For Article

it’s exciting to be able to offer a digital edition of a work like “photography plus” !!

the images can be re-sized for a closer look

i can enclose detail shots for an even closer look

special features like the photo-poem can be incuded

even a couple of poems or more can be added

plus i can link in and out of my commentary, adding paths to illustrate the ideas

this is exciting! ;-)

did i mention i get to bring in yogic and fitness thought, and blend it right into the conversation about the photos!

i’ve even enclosed one yoga-heavy article of how i used photos, to help tell a story of heart openers that reflect and generate gratitude!

yes, very exciting ;-) i hope you’ll take a look, tell your friends, and if so, let me know also ;-)

Adan Lerma

art hop 2011 in burlington vermont lived up to its name – it was hopping!

at least when we were there ;-)

we’d gone friday night around 7, and then saturday late afternoon at almost 4

a shuttle driver saturday told us we’d gotten there friday right when things got really going -

and that though there were fewer people there then, as we rode back from the festival sat, it was already picking up for the two “strut” fashion shows that night, plus seven days was having their birthday party after the shows at 10 that night

sheila & i have a vow to “see” if we can plan it to go saturday night next year; we’ll have to see how our old bones do ;-)

***

Art Hop Friday Evening (Text)

friday evening, for us, was the more energetic of the two times we attended art hop

last year, when we’d visited vermont, before we moved here this june, we’d gone in mid afternoon, and the festival was packed and great fun, but we wanted to experience what a spread out art festival over several near-by areas of town would be like at night

it was a great choice, the weather was clear, cool (by texas standards ;-) ) , and people were out enjoying with kids and pets in tow

the short video i show later in the article will give a sense of this best i think

people seemed respectful of maneuvering around each other, cars, doorways, and many many stairways into the old converted brick and stone warehouses

the art was eclectic, well hung, well lit, and interesting -

landscapes of local interest, vermont in general were popular, probably the most represented i think, and in many varied styles : sketchy, detailed, fuzzy, abstracted, soft, focussed – all styles

a few people had postcards and notecards of their work made out, and i wish there’d been more of that, but that can get pricey for the artist

we’d walked to the main section of pine street from the lake champlain college miller campus where my art is hung, and people seemed to be able to get from one area to the other pretty easily by walking, and shuttles ran frequently enough it seemed

my favorite thing about attending an outdoor/indoor art festival at night though, is the way the lights stand out from the dark, the way music from all corners in all styles would drift out toward us as we walked along, and the movement of the people through and among all the these lights and sounds -

the near-full moon added a big special effect ;-)

my review of my art work and friday night posted earlier has lots of video stills from the video below which i think captures the feel of the night for me

all in all, fun, nice, and let’s do it again!

***

Art Hop Saturday Day (Text)

Sheila Sat pm at Art Hop 2011

Sheila Sat pm at Art Hop 2011

as happens at times, we’d intended to go mid afternoon to saturday’s festival, but weren’t able to get there til around 4

i’ve done enough festivals and shows since the early 80′s, i could feel and see the tell-tell signs of people anxious to wrap things up – glancing at watches, the sky, boxes being discretely pulled out for loading, that sort of thing

i’ve also done enough events to see that the folk ready to pack up were just ready to get going, and not anxious to “get away” from a bad show

also, there was an undercurrent of growing energy, especially as we got nearer and past 5

because there were to be two fashion shows behind the maltex building, a giant old bldg that’s been redone and where lots of art covers the walls of the many floors, people were arriving for the evening’s events

plus seven days, an online and weekly hard copy news outfit that strongly reminded me of our missed austin chronicle back in texas, had a free birthday party for itself scheduled at 10 after the fashion shows

attending the fashion show & party is something i definitely want to be able to do next year

as the separate video for saturday below shows, the activity was much more muted than the night before, but we did go in the in-between hour ;-)

earlier, we’d seen huge crowds of folk heading down college st toward town and, i assume, art hop; and as i’ve mentioned, people were starting to arrive at 5, looking around with that look of expectation of getting ready for a good time ;-)

sheila & i were able to walk the floors of the maltex bldg and see the art more leisurely

we also were able to walk off pine street where myers bagels is, one of our favorite local bagel and coffee spots, down to the edge of the water where lake champlain begins

the video narration i made shows how pretty and close nature is here…

all in all, our short afternoon excursion to art hop was worth it too

***

Thoughts on Art Hop as a Festival

Disclaimer

comparing an “art” festival to other festivals i’ve either been in or been to, can be tricky, so please keep in mind, these are personal comparisons, though i can say up front, my own experience is extremely favorable so far regarding my feelings about Art Hop here in burlington

Similarities & Differences to Other Arts Festivals I’ve Been To or Been In

is art hop the art event that art expo in nyc‘s been? of course not but one can’t go outside the javits center and walk down to a view like that of lake champlain

is art hop mad art selling event of the old westheimer art festivals of the 80′s in houston? doesn’t seem to be, but one doesn’t need to carry a portable ac unit in early sept to go to art hop and enjoy the outdoor fun

does art hop have the exhibitor-numbers spread of houston’s international festival? no, but for such an eclectic mix of folk, at a fraction of the price, art hop seems a fair enough trade-off

how does art hop compare to a 1 1/2 day event like austin’s first night, beginning of each year that goes to midnight new year’s eve? well, now comparisons are getting closer -

art goes down congress ave from nearly the capitol to the river, with folks riding across the bridges to art venues on both sides of the colorado river, aka lady bird lake, ie, nature is nearby and visible and almost part of the show

the weather on new year’s in austin is often similar to what i’ve seen the last two years here in burlington ;-)

eclectic in terms of attendees, the art, and music “happenings” is more the standard than an exception

though, with almost 10x burlington’s metro population, austin should be comparable to burlington’s art hop – that there’s a positive comparability at all in my mind, is more to the plus about art hop than anything else!

besides, with austin’s first night now cancelled, burlington has sole bragging rights i think ;-)

but what about austin’s sxsw, south by southwest, music festival – nope, this is a music festival, of epic continuous proportions, and doesn’t count!

and what about compared to art events say, in new orleans, down in the french quarter? ok, i’ll have to pass on this one, who can remember much from those events ;-)

*

Best Comparison for Me

[ 091711 - please note: this section was inadvertently left out when this article was posted 091511, and was intended to be included, my apologies for any inconvenience ]

but there is one festival that most reminds me of art hop, the east austin studio tour, “east”

not a perfect comparison, as east is an eclectic collection of individual galleries and artist studios, but the fact i need to descriptively include “eclectic” begins to set the similarities

their website has this description :

The East Austin Studio Tour is a self-guided tour and celebration of east Austin’s creative culture! The 2011 East Austin Studio Tour will be a free nine day event, spanning across two weekends. From November 12 – 20, experience the vibrant energy of east Austin by exploring the work of hundreds of artists in their studios, gallery spaces and a number of exciting art events.

art hop is also self guided, also free, but more importantly, fills spaces in an area of town normally less frequented by people from other areas of town

in addition to gallery spaces, warehouses and myriad hallways are used -

different areas of the general neighborhood area need to be traveled or shuttled or walked to -

there’s an open standard with no jurying, encouraging whatever eclectic mix there is to “show up” -

there’s an entrepreneurial spirit in many spaces, allowing the hunger of the artist to share, to sell, to greet, and to experience, to come out off the canvas and onto the orb of other people -

and there’s an exposure of a neglected or ignored or less-well-known part of town to be visited and enjoyed, celebrated really, that wouldn’t happen as broadly, without the festival

those similarities of art hop to east, are among the many reasons i like and can heartily recommend art hop, but below are even more reasons! ;-)

*

What I Liked

fact is, like all art events, art hop is unique in what it offers

what else do i like? plenty -

  • reasonable cost
  • great attendance
  • multiple days of festival
  • month long showing of artists’ work
  • much music
  • typically great weather
  • easy to get around
  • good shuttle service
  • eclectic attendance
  • fashion show
  • energy energy energy
  • proximity to nature
  • interesting people watching
  • quality variety of art
  • the people
  • the music
  • the art

*

Bottomline

bottomline, the fact i can even contemplate how art hop stacks up to some of the art events i’ve either attended or showed in, is a testament to what art hop is -

a grand down-to-earth fully-fun accessible music-laced affordable art show…

hope i get to enjoy another one ;-)

they live relatively near by, by texas-traveling standards ;-) and were the perfect people for the larger image

red bud trail park is another of those magic spots in austin -

cliffs, running rocky water, and occasionally, able to present fall foliage

though i haven’t seen the fall foliage here in vermont yet, and this will be my first time to see a full fall season up north, i can see this type terrain here in many places, and thought this was a good image-fit for the art hop show

the weather here in burlington, is already moderating, vs “cooling” to around a hundred back in texas! so i look fwd to this new visual treat ;-)

***

Rowing on Town Lake

Rowing on Town Lake, Original Painting Adan Lerma

*

“rowing on town lake” also has a bigger brother, though it is in storage in houston

this work is an earlier work than red bud trail, and is softer

i think i got better, in terms of physical representation, as i developed my impressionist style, the first few years after 2000, but i always still hunger back to the softness in this painting

a goal of mine is, to merge a more accurate representation, yet retain a sure softness…

one that now reflects a greater fondness in my heart for dear places ;-)

***

Winter Morning, Zilker Park

Winter Morning, Zilker Park, Original Painting Adan Lerma

*

“winter morning, zilker park” is probably not much of a winter scene here in vermont ;-)

in austin, though, it’s a welcome winter prototype from the year’s usual lengthy heat

but my still strong attachment to this painting is due to the combination of the rolling land and blending colors; the sun was shining as it does most the time, but more softly, casting accents of shadows that reach along the ground

“winter morning…” comes closer to my ideal above, of merging accuracy of depiction with softness

just beyond the small hill’s rise in zilker park, is barton springs, and all this is within site of the skyline of austin

both burlington and austin have kept the life of the land alive in the midst of many people

that’s an accomplishment!

***

View of the Capitol

View of the Capitol, Original Painting Adan Lerma

*

“view of the capitol”

i mentioned above how the land’s view in “winter morning, zilker park” is within view of austin’s skyline – if you follow the ridge to barton springs in that painting, and paddle north under barton springs rd bridge and the walking bridge that spans the banks, one can see the beginnings of the city’s center -

many would argue barton springs is austin’s true center; i couldn’t disagree with that ;-)

in winter, when the thick foliage along the banks has died back, it’s possible to get a peek at the texas state capitol

the bldgs down the view of the waterway across town lake (the colorado river) are no longer visible, as new bldgs have been built near the north shore

it’s not often one can glimpse the capitol from the park, so that, and the colors of faint fall foliage, appeal to me

***

Off Hwy 71

Off Hwy 71, Original Painting Adan Lerma

*

“off hwy 71″ is not a scene in austin, but about 3/4 ways to columbus

we liked traveling this route to houston to see family, as there’s sections of rolling hills, farms, lots of cows and haystacks

it’s a spring scene, around april, when the land is usually flush with abundance

i love the colors and chock fullness of flowers and old barn in the background

when i started this blog, i chose this image as my header for my page with information about the classes we teach, and when we moved to vermont, i didn’t spend much time wondering whether to keep the image -

it hasn’t skipped a beat in appropriateness ;-)

***

Bryant Park NYC

“bryant park” is also not a scene in austin, and is also one of the rare paintings i’ve done from an image i didn’t personally see and take with my camera -

my son had taken this image on a trip to manhattan, and it’s always appealed to me

nature with bits of bldgs showing through, as with some of the images above, is a favorite motif of mine

below is a photo in the same line of city hall park here in burlington

Exhibit Location at Art Hop & thru September

my six small paintings are enjoying their art hop stay at champlain college’s new se campus miller campus location, 175 lakeside ave, here in burlington

faculty and students have their art exhibit on the first two floors, and quite a few art hop artists are on the top, third level

the facility is top notch, and the art work through-out the floors, is eclectic and interesting

*

my sincere thanks, both to the art hop folk at seaba for my placement, and to champlain college for providing such nice space for us to use

Sneak Peek – Art Hop Friday Night, 5-9 pm

Intro

along with my wife and her brother, i got myself down to champlain college’s miller campus around 7 last night to see the exhibit in place -

the images of my paintings above were taken last night -

the images below are a tease of the art scene in general last night ;-)

next week i’ll post an extended view of this year’s Art Hop, hopefully with some video, stills, and (of course) commentary!

*

this afternoon sheila & i will return to the scene of the fun, taking the shuttles this time (vs a car), and see what we see

for those wondering if they should go, this festival seems hugely family friendly, with large groups of young-uns with their older folk, the little ones definitely appearing to be enjoy the evening ;-)

Stills from Friday Evening’s Video

i wish i could’ve gotten shots of the art work as well, but this at least gives an idea of the atmosphere of going to see the artwork ;-)

Final Thoughts on My Exhibited Art

Adan Lerma

i like these small paintings -

and the 8×10 and other nearby sizes seem to suit me

it’s not that i don’t also like working on larger pieces, but they require space and time

and small pieces seem to ask an intimacy of me, an opportunity to find the essence of what i see and what i feel as i’m seeing it

my larger work has at times it seems, become almost as grand as the dimensions -

but the smaller pieces remain quiet, in the sense of their reach

they’re softer, like small poses within a larger pose in yoga

nuances that let a piece of me find itself and feel good

they’re small breaths of paint upon my canvas

happy, when the size constraints are…

accepted….

How We Escaped the Texas Heat Wave of 2011, We Moved ;-)

***

Intro

after experiencing both an earthquake and a hurricane this past week here in new england, i figured this would be as good a time as any to declare a new beginning, in this, my third of my series of texas to vermont posts ;-)

unlike my preparations and transition articles, where i saw where i was and how things were changing in mine and sheila’s life, the material of our new beginning is only now beginning to show itself more fully

i’d expected that the new beginning would simply be a setting up of new classes, and start again -

but it’s been much much more…

***

New Stuff

Videos

Sheila & Adan in "Pause" video 1

Sheila & Adan in "Pause" video 1

oh boy, never would i have imagined that i’d make a solo music-dance video, and that sheila and i would then follow that with one of us together -

much less to submit to a zumba contest ;-)

the learning curve, just for these basic creations, was fairly steep for me, but in time, these’ll get easier, and more fun stuff should begin to show up, gradually ;-)

*

Zumba®

sheila and i are in process of learning, creating, and practicing enough routines to eventually offer a zumba gold express class

we are also looking fwd to a future specialty zumba is preparing, currently being called “sentao”

sentao means seated in spanish, and a fully functional chair class is something our main target group (seniors, de-conditioned adults, folks coming back from illness or injury or inactivity) needs very much

i’ve mentioned in various posts how chair work is good in so many ways, even very fit individuals -

it’s great as a recovery routine -

and as something to learn to share with someone one cares for but, needs “company” to feel comfortable doing an exercise

the awareness and body-mind connection engendered by yoga, i’ve found, helps tremendously in learning new ways to move, and being more expressive – so we see a nice synergy here

*

Line Dance

the same type of synergy and continuity of motion and awareness exists in enjoying doing line dance

the (usually) repetitive, more melodic moving and breathing patterns in line dance are, i’ve felt, even more quickly enhanced by yogic breathing exercises and poses

because of the smaller amount of choreography involved, and the smaller range of motion (rom) usually involved, more seniors seem to bridge the pose work of yoga to movement to music

for the same reasons involving choreography, sheila and i feel line dance will probably be our first aerobic-dance class we’ll feature to go with our yoga classes, and will be an extension of the sequence of classes we currently offer at the fitness center downtown in burlington

the line dance class, like our projected zumba gold class, is being planned as an express class, approx 30 minutes

we’ll of course post an article (and more) when that comes about ;-)

*

Sequence Classes

we’ve been fortunate to develop a series of classes that offer a progressive sequence of activity and awareness, from very basic gentle longer held yoga poses, to chair based functional fitness work, to aerobic dance basics

all the classes begin with three yogic breath exercises, to promote a fuller calming breath and a stronger core

both our zumba express and line dance classes will also include one or two short yogic breathing exercises, plus a warmup and cooldown

all these components, breath work, warmups, and cooldowns, are too important and too beneficial not to include -

as i expressed in “teaching limitations is teaching awareness (a beginner’s view)” -

“from the start of my yoga-adan blog, i began my earliest posts with the intent to present and demonstrate the disarmingly simple idea that :

each person is unique, yet similar to other people”

that idea has only strengthened over time…

*

Vermont

being in burlington, and vermont in general, has so far been a real treat, a very new treat, for me

even sheila, born and raised here, a graduate of the university of vermont, feels “almost” new here – she has spent the last 30+ years in texas ;-)

the terrain and the climate are an incredible new experience (beyond visiting for a week or so)

coming from the texas gulf coastal plain and even from the hill country of central texas, this is much more varied in terrain, and unbelievably cooler!

*

what hasn’t been as new, is the type of people here in vermont -

they are as close to what i consider texans as any place i’ve been -

very independent, proud of their history, and yet collective in spirit

during the recent impact from hurricane irene, the local and state news sources provided the kind of care and newscasting any community could hope for

without the following consistent twitter contributions, following the state’s impact and response to the storm would have been nearly impossible

@keithmontpVT - @Seven_Days - @vermontweather

my deep and sincere thanks to all three…

*

there’s a growth in the integration of my interests in yoga, fitness, and the arts, that i believe directly benefits from the energy of the land and the people of vermont

*

Art Hop

My Art Hop Px Pic 1

My Art Hop Px Pic 1

art hop!

though i didn’t have new art (vermont art) to bring art hop last week, the venue is new, very new, to me

hugely spread out over the south end of burlington

it feels, when sheila & i attended it last year when we visited her brother, like a combination of the ruckus-ness of the westheimer arts festival of the 80′s in houston, melded to any two days of sxsw in austin nowadays -

that’s saying a lot of good things ’bout art hop ;-)

***

Video from Lake Champlain Vermont

sheila and i quickly caught sight of several 1/2 price and 2 for 1 offering companies here (as in texas), jumpon-it and livingsocial

when $7 tickets for a northern lights 1 1/2 hr sightseeing tour on lake champlain came up, we grabbed them, and i was able to shoot a bit of what we saw

the video is very experimental / learning-curve for me

so my apologies for the lack of polish ;-)

no original audio – ‘cept for a chuckle at the end of a surprise cameo by sheila ;-)

but did put in some soundtrack from some selections that imovie provided

i also played with various styles and types and durations of captions

so kinda a hodge podge finger painting like mud paddy cakes kind of video ;-) fun!

*

i’ve created a clickable link on the video image, but just in case, below the image, is the link for copy / paste

did i mention i’m still sliding ’round the learning curve? ;-)

*

one of the sights on the video, is of rock point, of which i did a painting back in the 80′s

sheila’s dad had requested it, and had it for many years before he passed away

today we have it hanging in a great spot in our dining room

*

[ the image of "rock point, vermont" will be included in an in-progress ebook of one year of images from this site ]

Rock Point, Vermont

Rock Point, Vermont - Original Painting by Adan Lerma 1986

*

the tour above provided commentary and information about the lake and surrounding landmarks -

evidently, the forestry around rock point is original to the time of first settlement, and has been kept from being harvested

the land is owned by the episcopalian diocese of vermont, and provides free passes for entry to the park there – “though donations are greatly appreciated ;-) fair enough!

***

New Future Plans

Ebooks

ahhh, another new technology i’m looking into ;-)

my first ebooks planned, at this point, will be of my original poetry

i’ll still post poems online, though, with commentary, and with nearly 1000 poems between sheila & myself, i could post one a week for 20 years, and still not be fully online!

what this means is, waiting for a subject collection, rather than the ebook, will be a hopefully pleasant process, but also a long one – something i kinda like myself anyways ;-)

so the ebook will provide a subject collection right away

but this is going to take time

the format to successfully upload onto platforms, like the kindle, requires a shift in how to create page breaks, an index, etc

*

the ebooks planned will have the poems presented by subject matter, and i will have more info in future posts regarding which subjects will be first, how many titles will be included, and what sub-topic-headings might be included

additionally, one or more features would be included not available or appropriate for the blog, and better presented via the ebook

*

some sites i’ve been getting what appears to be useful info about this are :

one spoon at a time, tristan higbee, and threepress consulting

all are new to me, but again, seem very useful so far

*

Online Studies

this is more vague in my mind than the ebooks project, but something that keeps coming to mind when i’m in a held pose, or moving in a particularly enjoyable aerobic dance step

my son has suggested several instructional ideas that have promise

but i know less about how to develop this than the idea before or that follows, so currently i feel this is further down the learning curve, and thus the time-curve, than some of the other projects

time, though, as usual, will tell – this seed need more time yet in the ground ;-)

*

Website

Battery Park Burlington, Vermont Lake View

*

first and most importantly, no changes in current content or availability would or will change

second, i have no ads, visible or hidden, affiliate or prepaid, anywhere on my site  [1]

“if” and when that changes, i will be letting everyone know, ahead of time…

and still, as per my first point, no content would change

i would not and will not charge for articles

or poems i choose to post

or images of art work

or photos

nor my fabulous yak yak commentaries ;-)

*

plus, if i decided to have some affiliate ads, i would never email them to anyone

the ads would only be on a site page, and be fully appropriate for the topic

an example would be ad to amazon for topic related books etc

*

both roseanne at it’s all yoga baby, and nancy at flying yogini, have written about this, moving to or having a blog format/host that allows and enables more creative freedom, including the ability to have appropriate ads and/or affiliate links

integrity is number one with both the folk above on their sites, giving me positive examples of generating income on their sites

also my previous art site had google ads, and i didn’t have any problem with the ad types

so a site with even more control over which type ads, and for what type product or person or company, would be a fairly natural, even welcome, extension for me

*

as nancy has blogged about, she experienced transition pains in moving from an ad free dot com address, to that of a more creative-allowing dot org home

that awareness is, for now, keeping me from adding video and other features to my current dot com site; new video, as it comes out (beginning with my very beginner feature on our boat trip on lake champlain above) i’ll probably post on youtube

audio would be interesting to play with too

so one day… ;-)

*

Meanwhile

my attention must remain on continuing to learn, continuing to present as best of material i can understand and present that integrates having fun and staying healthy via yoga, fitness, and the arts

that, after all, is what my life is about ;-)

it’s what i think i model…

***

Final Thoughts

Adan Lerma

My Integration of Yoga, Fitness, and the Arts is a Great Unknown

my integration-effort to understand and experience the underlying oneness i’ve always sensed in yoga, fitness activities, and the arts, began simply and easily enough

i’d write about yoga, and it’d easily remind me of something similar in aerobic dance movement, or painting, or poetry, or writing, or music – you get the idea ;-)

obviously i’m leading up to saying it’s no longer as easy a process as i once believed -

not because it’s harder to see or feel or sense the connections…

but because the connections have become so dense!

the pathways of discovery are everywhere

they lead me down shortcuts

across new main roads

deeper into openings

of surprise sunlight

i no longer know where i’ll end up

or, more accurately, think i know where the road curves

*

what is fiddling with video splicing into my ideas ?

how does that affect teaching poses in class ?

when are brush strokes and touch adjustments alike ?

why does the sound of words on paper feel like breath on hands upon the keyboard ?

am i listening to the murmurs of caring i am hearing?

*

my mind and heart together know the map

but life is new everyday

new places, new roads, new rivers, will be explored

some updates will map instantly

others, not so quickly ;-)

*

Biggest Surprise – Continuity in Vermont

i expected a lot of unexpected surprises in moving to vermont

i’d visited a bit, here and there, for a week or two, throughout the years since i met sheila

intellectually, i knew the air would be drier (most the time)

and cooler ;-)

that the land would rise and fall more continually, at times abruptly

hills would be small mountains back in my part of texas

and i knew experiencing this would still be…new

rumpled land tossed across yards and streets like morning blankets left unmade til evening

the big trees would hold the wind and shake themselves with it in a yogic-fire breath of release

i haven’t even made it out of summer yet!

what will my first full autumn colors bring to my heart’s eyes ?

winters ice and sand-dunes of snow ?

i expect all that -

my surprise, is how texan the people of vermont are

and how vermonty my texanness is

staunch in freedom

free in fairness

valuing

wealth in people

*

there’s a continuity with my kind of people -

i should’ve known, with a wife from vermont ;-)

*

Yoga 2.0 – “Threads of Yoga : a Remix”

special thanks to carol horton for her shared link on facebook ;-)

threads of yoga, a remix, from the folk at yoga 2.0, Matthew Remski and Scott Petrie, is the kind of contemporary re-look at enduring ancient thought that greatly appeals to me

i, literally, don’t know if i agree with all these guys have come up with – i say literally ’cause i’m not completely familiar with their line of thought -

a remix, as per the authors’ words, differs from a translation :

“The purpose of a remix is equal parts homage, adventure, reclamation, and pleasure. It collects the raw beats and hooks of the past and brands them, transparently, with the pulse of the present…

“In the yoga 2.0 idiom, this pulse says a few key things:

    • relationship is more important than private bliss,
    • metaphysics distracts from presence,
    • consciousness is evolving new questions, and –
    • yoga is always changing, because its practitioners are”

the quality of their continuity of effort will probably keep me returning to their line of thought

*

Yoga Provides Me Continuity

*

Gratitude, Sheila, Finding

Gratitude, Sheila, Finding - Original Photography Adan Lerma

*

renewed continuity

enhanced continuity

*

i’ve always been aware of, and been good, with connections

seeing continuities, similarities, attachments

yoga has helped me refine this

sometimes with my own brain-smile humor ;-)

heart-bone is connected to the mind-bone is connected to the ankle-balance-bone is connected to the core-bone is connected to my art-bone is connected to my word-bone

yes, it was time for a new beginning ;-)

Intro

after teaching our morning chair based class, and after a quick lunch, sheila & i delivered my six small pieces to my assigned art hop location at 180 flynn ave here in burlington

none of the paintings are of vermont; my lone vermont creation, “rock point, vermont” having been a gift to sheila’s dad, and now back with us since he passed away some years ago, hangs in our dining room

painting some vermont images is a clear expected goal of mine

i of course have much photography of my new locale already

even my recent and current blog header is of vermont

so i’m patiently awaiting my own arrival!

of new vermont art that is ;-)

i’ll have more to say in a later post this month on the art work itself

***

Art Hop

art hop has evidently grown tremendously recently, and this year’s show boasts over 700 paying artists

i feel i should mention the paying part, as, though i am grateful to be in the overall festival hop, i don’t want to mislead anyone that i was juried in; i “qualified” by paying the entry fee ;-)

but the price was reasonable, and the potential and chance to exhibit is good

the opening friday evening event is chock full of locations all around town

and from experience, the saturday crowds are all fun and energy!

*

one of the better article’s i’ve come across on art hop, “19th annual south end art hop,” from art map burlington, says :

“Art Hop’s eclectic nature is part of what makes it a genuine expression of art in Vermont” and “Your rich aunt’s art fair this is not” ;-)

*

the art hop itself is sponsored (run?) by seaba, the south end arts + business association

their slogan is “where art works”

i may not care much for my location this year, but i can’t argue much with that premise ;-)

***

Planned Follow-Up Art Hop Posts

i’d like to do at least two more posts related to art hop

one, maybe some video of the paintings hanging, with a bit of commentary about them – how they were painted or of where or why that image, that sort of thing

that should be a challenge and fun ;-)

*

two, a review of art hop, from my own participating perspective, after sept when the show’s run it’s run

last year, when sheila and i visited burlington, we attended the 2010 art hop with her brother, and had a great time -

but we stayed on the main road of bldgs exhibiting art work, on pine street, and opted not to take the free shuttle to the further locations…

yes, i’m at one of those further locations ;-) so we’ll see how this pans out

there are a fair number of small galleries and related arts-activity small businesses nearby, including a movement studio, a writing workshop location, antique shops, and various other studios

plus, switchback brewery, a local vermont brewery, with tours and tastings, is around the corner of the old industrial complex where my work will be, that alone may make things worthwhile ;-)

***

Final Thoughts

Yoga-Art Quote

i’m still trying to find the site where, in the header, the blog’s owner had a quote from iyengar regarding yoga and art

it was several lines of text at the top left of the opening page, and if i find it, or someone sends it to me, i’ll add it to this post with a notation of when added etc

*

Two Yoga-Art Links

meanwhile ;-)

here’s two links i think worth sharing

1) an article on magazine of yoga, “book review: art & yoga” by the editor, susan maier-moul

quoting the author, Hari Kirin,

“Art is not just a matter of expressing in an outer form that we already know. Like yoga, art is a union of the known with the unknown”

then susan,

Art & Yoga delivers concise and applicable teachings on the chakras in regard to the practice and exploration of practice of both art and yoga”

2) plans on a comet -

an eclectic yoga-arts site, by a young lady who also happens to write a regular music feature for magazine of yoga; obviously a well-functioning match ;-)

emmanuelle, the young lady who creates her site’s art work and musings, is like a gently guided rush of strongly coursing spring waters…

…a beauty to watch make its path, yet with a verve of energy that borders it banks in a way that keeps one alert ;-)

*

My Yoga-Art Quote

how do i tell the difference between art & yoga?

i can’t -

’cause my brush with reality is always a representation of what’s inside… ;-)

originally titled after a location in austin, “tree with stairway to barton springs” i realized the image no longer represented that location to me, or just that location i should say ;-)

one of my favorite images, i still clearly remember working on the painting in the front “art room” of an old house sheila and i once had in austin

people rarely used the steps, either the sidewalk up near robert e lee rd was in need of repair, or the walk at the base of the stairs, along barton creek, had, once again, been washed away in a rare sudden flash flood

but everyone stopping by along the bridge on barton springs rd, or cruising by in a canoe or small boat on barton springs itself, always caught site of the steps connecting people to nature

it was a recognized access-attempt to bridge ourselves to a more natural state

i often heard the indians who’d lived in this cooler more green more serene part of texas, thought the land and water sacred

one could paddle up to the colorado river, now slowed by dams and renamed lady bird lake, and with one quick gasp, be beneath the bridges and skyscrapers of modern-day austin

at night, with the lights of the city winking at the stars above, the view could be stunningly serene; that experience led to my night-time austin favorite  painting, “austin at night”

though i have several favorite paintings set in the day time in austin, “tree, with stairs” is definitely one of those

if there’s a connection to be made or realized, for me, from this art piece and yoga, it’s got to be tied to what the ancient ancestors of the land and waters of barton springs sensed

a willingness for a peaceful unity of ourselves with our earth

my first poem of the year, this fifth month, of our last year in galveston

*

Galveston in the 21st Century, in Three Parts

my first trip to galveston

from my first trip from houston with my parents and younger brother, creeping down hwy 3 past hamlets now grown into hustling cities sprawling mid-way back to houston -

up broadway’s final slope to gain the high ground of the seawall

my four year old eyes first saw the now gone mile-long stretches of clean beach

i saw the relentless calling-waves of the gulf, the breeze immediate

i was imprinted with remembrance

i was awakened to my desires

i returned, year to year,

and only just knew

i now carried it

inside me

always

*

our last stay in galveston

cranes and pelicans

hawks and sea gulls

*

they see the island, residents

have forgotten

yet

is always here

*

storm-rebuilds abound

seawall enhancements

new sand, new rock groins groaning

*

shells re-gutted to rebuild the past -

the flagship hotel

hosting families lovers kids and strangers since

i first came here half a century ago

a shell since last hurricane…no

rebuilding the stucco walls

with mermaids

this time

*

‘stead

*

a memory-remnant, from before the seawall, ferris

wheels – fun across the water when casual was

a light full suit, top hats and pants – and

sunscreen

was wire mesh or lace…

back then ;-)

*

now

drivers crawl for parking spaces by the sea as

specks of pelicans v-line the sky

searching streaking lines of food swimming

below

the moving lapping surface

*

the water’s waves rise and fall in chops as sea gulls

swish and sway and stay aloft

currents of air and water change bathing

babies babes and better halves behaving

cautiously, the foreign feel of movement,

salted air, all around their swim-

trunked bodies -

caressing skin unexpectedly, un-shyly…

*

hawks hold back, riding the sandbar’s salty seagrass edge for tiny prey

praying the last lands of food aren’t once again swallowed

by a searching sea

*

everyone remembers this is

borrowed land

the sands shifting seamlessly south

the beach huts and houses rising falling with

relentless winds of timeless changing

*

the pelicans know, were

here before the coast cracked to create

the sandbar Lafitte found so

appealing

*

the cranes say they’ll return and see

what’s left

next winter, other

places to go things to see

*

the people know too

*

the sea calls, but the sea takes

back

*

to live in galveston is to

visit

*

we’re “remembered” by the wind we are

we are but visitors

*

even back, on houston’s higher drier ground

*

so we breathe, we breathe

*

the sea breeze-trails sink memories

from the air

into

every cell

*

we are aloft too

that way…

*

goodbye galveston

i’ve cupped your stars so seldom seen in houston

i’ve rinsed my hair in salt spray licked by waves of green

i’ve seen a thousand sunsets across the bay

as gorgeous as the carribean

i’ve heard your whispers along the rocks stretching fingers

of stone walkways from the beach

and i’ve heard your warnings that only change changes -

hurricanes return, the sunrise rises, the sea birds fish the day

and lovers sense softness beneath their feet, each night, along the crawling shoreline

their breath is the same breath they breathe in from the darkened night

their hearts beat with tides tied to moons and moods and amore

none of this will i miss – it rests, knowing, within me

reminding me, feeding me

i carry you

always, all ways, all the way

back home…

Austin at Night

Austin at Night, Original Oil by Adan Lerma, Private Collection

*

sheila and i walked the shore one october night, along with thousands others celebrating one of lance armstrong‘s early tour de france wins

it was a rare beauty of a night, dry-ish air, cool, not windy

the air itself, as is often in austin, was festive

energy permeated everyone

but in a spell-bound, quiet, peaceful way one can only breathe in and let the senses feast as feast they can ;-)

the final image remained true to the couple in a canoe resting on the for-now controlled colorado river, the segment by downtown renamed town lake for its useability – that couple was everyone in one’s or two’s or more struck still by the scene of man and nature, steel and shrubs and a street of water, co-existing, re-charging, preserving each other

i’ve often wondered if ancient tribes of indians, resting along the shore, or riding rapids waves of yet-to-be controlled waters, felt the same wonderment

i can’t imagine they wouldn’t have

after all, barton springs, less than a mile upstream, is known to’ve been a sacred place

most of us that’ve lived in austin still believe it is ;-)

*

a large image, for me, 36×48, on gallery-wrap canvas, painted with a just-getting-used-to medium of water based oil paints – even my art medium an example of opposing forces merging into something new and welcome ;-)

in a rare procedure, though i worked as usual from both memory and my own photos, i’d print out sectional sheets of the image on 8/12 x 11′s, piece them together, and have them taped on a portable wall where i worked -

i’d simply let the image be there, for me to notice, and let the interaction tell me what i’d like to see : more dark or light, which colors where, extend or concentrate gradations, sectional proportions, and of course the general gestalt of the scene as we’d seen it

below, below a detail from “austin at night,” i’ve reposted my artist commentary from 2008

it repeats some of what i’ve written above, but the image still has such a power for me, i’ve decided to show that, and let my current and my previous commentaries stand

Artist Commentary

“Austin at Night”

a grand evening image of the austin skyline

my wife and i had been at the huge gathering celebrating one of lance armstrong’s tour de france early victories, and had gone behind the stage set up by then town lake (now lady bird lake) and decided to stroll along the path by the shore

lots of other people were doing the same

it felt we were back stage, as we were literally behind the giant temporary stage, and in relative darkness with all the lighting on the other side of the night’s action

cool night october air was a grand relief from the usual hot austin weather that lingers well into october and sometimes november

people in canoes and small boats were anchored near by on the river, or slipping slowly past in no hurry to leave the night

the image in the painting is very much what it looked like that night – i believe the texture and deep tones help capture the restful upbeat feeling everyone seemed to enjoy

the skyline has changed quite a bit, many new original design buildings have since been raised, but much else is the same

lady bird lake, even with its name change, the path along the shore, the cool evenings after the warm or hot days, and people enjoying the chance to be in so much nature, in the midst of so much urbanness, is all, still, very much there

“Houston Skyline from Sabine Street Bridge”

hard to realize sometimes this was the scene of many of my childhood explorations growing up in houston, this area of buffalo bayou

two churches i grew up going to, St Stephens and St Josephs, are fairly near by

and the houston skyline, well, from my parents’ home, near white oak bayou and tc jester, the esperson bldg was ’bout the tallest thing we could see from the bridge near our house, and it’s not even visible anymore in this scene

but i love the way the skyline’s evolved – i imagined it being this way one day, but never thought it’d be as grand and to the extent it is now

and still, if one turns 180 degrees, and faces west on this sturdy bridge between allen pkwy and memorial drive, is a vastly cleaned up and beautified portion of houston just bursting to go wild again, if not trimmed and cared for regularly ;-)

a good view of this “other view” from the bridge, is in my painting “Houston Buffalo Bayou from Sabine Street Bridge  [1]

- the painting itself is much softer (in real life) than i’ve been able to reproduce online; kinda like the people in houston itself

would it matter it’s in san antonio on the riverwalk?

i would think so ;-)

“San Antonio Riverwalk Bridge”

one of my favorites, partially because it’s of the riverwalk in san antonio, and partly because of the texture and color

though this piece is sold, licensing of the image is available; please feel free to contact me re commercial use of this image

this is of mid morning in early april or so, a wonderful time of day in south central texas, warm sunny but not yet hot – the air is fragrant from the myriad of flowers and blooming trees and shrubs, the day is still waking on the riverwalk

i hope to eventually add to this one image of san antonio with several others; one is mostly done, from a couple years back, but needs re-visiting to be finished where i’d like it; and another, of night, is barely set with an inlay, waiting for its own time to come again

for those of us who have been to the riverwalk, in the day and at night, this image is a welcome reminder; for those who have not yet visited this part of san antonio (walking distance to the alamo) i hope this will add its weight to your desire to visit some day

in the beginning to late 80′s, i had participated in the outdoor drama in galveston, “the lone star,” by paul green, and had done a small image of the alamo i had reprinted into a postcard; the small original was sold to one of the asst directors

adan – march 16, 2008

***

in a process sometimes so slow i feel there’s no movement, i am adding images of my paintings here on my new site, yoga-adan

i couldn’t continue anymore, without finally beginning integrating my interests in fitness and the arts, and yoga seems to have been the lynch pin, or in this case, bridge ;-)

yoga is the bridge of life…my life anyways ;-)

Rock Point, Vermont

Rock Point, Vermont - Original Acrylic Painting by Adan Lerma 1986

*

Where?

rock point is an interesting geological formation off the north beach area of burlington, and extends out onto lake champlain

my wife, sheila, is from vermont, and grew up near rock point

and her high school is near the beach vicinity  [1]

*

Why?

sheila’s dad, like my dad, was a big burly man; with both men sporting hearts to fit their chests, and proud of it ;-)

her dad had taken a photo of rock point, on one of the trips we made there from galveston

we’d usually take all three kids, including one time on an amtrak journey from houston to burlington – the kids’ memories of that trip differ interestingly from sheila and mine’s remembrances ;-)

while in vermont, mid august, a “little” cooler than i was used to back home ;-) we had a large family swimming day at north beach, then hiked around the lake’s edge over to about where rock point was – our kids, sheila’s nephews, brothers, her parents, us – it was quite a day, beautiful sky, light breeze, dry-ish air…

he asked me if i thought i could do a painting of rock point from the photo, as we were already back in texas

this painting was the result, and stayed with him til he passed

rock point has been with us since

*

How?

in the 80′s, i was still painting with acrylics (for ease of clean-up with a house of children and pets) and had been mostly creating abstracted designs of things

so painting rock point was a bit of creative challenge for me

*

not knowing which way to go with it, i began with a light undercoat, in case i needed to repaint over it, and start again

this turned out to be a lucky start, because the darker pigments, scumbled onto the canvas (and acrylics dry fast, so lend themselves to this technique) allowed a tinted glow to peek out from the lighter colors below

because of the time of year, or an article i’ve recently posted or intend to, or the image reminds me of something happening in my life at this time -

if i know, i’ll be sure and say…

otherwise, maybe later, i’d get a glimmer of why the clouds and sun played out the sky i saw that day ;-)

Why “Swan on Lady Bird Lake” ?

there’s all kind of reasons why i chose “swan on lady bird lake” as my first painting to feature -

one, it was up on the wall – has been for years since the early 2000′s when i painted it

two, one of my favorites ;-)

three, based on a photo i took with my oldest granddaughter, scout, along the hike & bike trail near downtown austin

four, looking at the painting, right now, on the second bedroom’s wall, it closely matches what i describe as a visually-felt state of being

it was an easy choice once my eyes rested on it…

*

Picture Facts

* 16×20 oil on canvas

* painted about 2002

* not for sale

* set in spring in austin

* relatively heavily textured

*

Why I Painted “Swan on Lady Bird Lake”

visual art i create comes from a verbally-complex intuitively-simple part of me

i can usually verbalize and verbalize the whys and whats of a piece of art i create

but it goes back to and comes from the image touching this most consistently conscious part of myself i can remember

this is especially true of visual art i create in paint

the colors and textures and push and pull of brush among pigment is like a self-guided visual meditation

all i require is a concentrated co-ordination of my eye, my hand, and my heart

*

the day was beautiful, austin at its remaining-good-weather best

the day had warmed toward the 90′s but been beat back nearing evening

scout, our oldest granddaughter was visiting, and we’d walked down to (then) town lake  [2] to catch the sights

joggers with bp monitors strapped like a stripe around their chest passed by, mingling with 3-wheel strollers holding tots or pets – shadows were creeping down the banks into the water – and the noise and shudder of all the autos waiting for their lights were…silent

the shuttered power plant along the north bank of the lake (the fragility tamed colorado river dammed further upstream to the west toward the sun toward the hill country) cast smoke-stack shadows reaching past the reflected creeping growth of green

scout spotted a bird, a white swan, the swan of town lake i told her, grinning – you know, like swan lake – no grandpa, that’s lame she grinned yet smiling through her eyes

i took some shots – there’s another one grandpa – click click

evening was cooling and we were getting hungry…

grandma would have supper ready ;-)

*

Details

this was the early years of my switch from acrylics to oil, from harder edges and abstraction – to softening blending sides and i-can-recognize-that images

"Detail, Swan on Lady Bird Lake"

"Detail, Swan on Lady Bird Lake"

i liked experimenting with thickly laid undercoats with ridged passages of color

i liked cross-laying the over-coats in skips and jumps and peek-a-boos

hellos and smiles and surprise expressions

but always touching the heart…

*

Yoga

so is this yoga?

well, at this level of feeling, that i have for both my art and my yoga practice, there’s no doubt for me it is

does it fit all definitions of yoga?

i doubt it ;-)

but then, it doesn’t fit “everyone’s” definition of art either ;-)

[1] lady bird lake, austin, tx

the name for the portion of the colorado river that is flow-controlled that passes by downtown, was originally called town lake

except for after heavy rainfalls, a person can actually canoe on the river most of the time

a few years ago, a non-binding vote-in was held, and town lake was renamed in in honor of lady bird johnson, the wife of president johnson from texas – i totally supported that with my own vote for her

lady bird did more to beautify texas (in my lifetime) than any other person i know of

there are actually stretches of texas hwys that are a visual pleasure to drive, esp in the spring time

it is hard to realize, without seeing photos or film of what the banks of town lake looked like before lady bird took charge of making town lake useful for the people of austin, how treeless and muddy and outright dangerous the place was
