I’d written recently, in writing about returning to SilverSneakers Yoga classes after my gallbladder surgery, and decided, on a whim, yesterday, when our classes at Golds Gym were cancelled as new floors are being installed (yay!) to checkout the schedule at a nearby Y, in Oak Hill here in Austin, and saw they offered Zumba Gold!

Zumba Gold is touted by most folks as a seniors’ alternative to regular Zumba.

It is, but —

It’s also much more (as are the SilverSneakers classes) in that we often see one or more folks who need a low impact alternative. Or slower paced alternative. Either ‘cause of injury or illness, and occasionally (very occasionally) just plain preference 😊

With my upcoming hiatal hernia surgery, and just now – two months since my gallbladder emergency – beginning to feel more how I’d felt literally the time a month prior to that surgery – we old(er) folks normally take longer to heal – I figured I best continue to strengthen myself as much as reasonable & possible.

My wife Sheila went with me (thank goodness!) and it was great!

I definitely challenged both the notion of what was reasonable or possible for me at this point in my recovery, but it was good have a pace that let me do the class, start to finish!

A few steps I picked up pretty well, others I had to chop-stumble-study via the excellent instructor Barbara.

And some, not too many, but a few, reminded me I wasn’t moving like I’d used to.

That’s ok. The pacing told me I can do it – again. Relatively soon.

After this next, hopefully last surgery next week.

That, for me, is aging gracefully 😊

My wife and I both take Yoga, balance, strength, and Zumba Gold classes; we’ve also used and enjoyed Anne Pringle’s DVDs 😊 –
