Sheila at the Big Clock "Horloge du Musée d'Orsay"

Spending a Little Time with Sheila at the Big Clock
Notice the Tiny Toe-Step Dance Pose ;-)
“Horloge du Musée d’Orsay”

**

The Day I Wed My Kids’ Step-Mom

Down the seawall in Galveston

down Broadway Boulevard’s hundred year old oaks

before Ike torn them down -

down to the courthouse

with our three kids

- in tow -

two

were mine and your little one.

But they were all, so little, then, weren’t they…

even

if

with their own children now.

And we heard “Going to the

Chapel”

playing in our Chevy Chevette

grins spreading stars ‘cross our eyes as we sang it.

The soft Galveston air

warm

but not yet hot.

The parking was easy then too.

And we’d jumped into doing it, it seemed -

marrying, even

if nearly a year and a half after we’d first pretended not to

have noticed each other.

Well

there’s no denying it now.

I married you then, and I’d marry you now.

And maybe remember, again, it wasn’t just the words in the song -

it was the music in the car and our children in the back seat

and the wind in the windows and all the wishes

we’ve worked to make true.

Happy Anniversary

Sheila

dVersePoets OpenLinkNight, # 94, Hosted by Grace

I’ve linked my new poem to a great site for poets, dVersePoets.

OpenLinkNight provides an open prompt once a week for poets to post on any subject.  A few suggestions, with an example in their posting, are spring, or a poem for National Poetry Month (April).

For spring, I do have an springtime Austin Texas photopoem with images of the Hike & Bike Trail.

But this poem, if you’ve had a chance to read it, is an anniversary poem to my wife, Sheila. ;-)

*

May 1st – Happy 32nd Anniversary to Sheila ;-)

Below are some nice memories of past posts where I could feature you, or you inspired me.

Muchas gracias, it’s been a journey that’s filled (over-flowed? ;-) ) my life.

Sheila’s Cane, After Surgery

some things

like ice crystals in winter

and sweat droplets

in summer

are

ubiquitous

it turns out that

sheila’s cane is also

a naturally occurring object

one

i spot and come across

sitting down by my laptop

or

the cane hung perfectly on the

spacings of her chair

beside my bed, on

a small rack for

knick knacks

and

clothes still needing drying -

between the

cushions of our small sofa aka

love seat

and even in

the kitchen, handle

curved to slide between

slats of the small pantry i built

when we first moved to vermont

our

officially the kitchen cane

it

could be worse

i realize

my belt loops could prove

awfully handy

for a cane

i’ll play it safe and just call it for what it is -

Romance Writer?  Me?!?! – Part Two

Definition

yesterday i wrote an overview of why it turns out that a lot of poetry and fiction from way back to now, might qualify as romance writing

Romance Writers of America a non-profit org, has this definition :

Two basic elements comprise every romance novel: a central love story and an emotionally-satisfying and optimistic ending.

i’m still convinced that a lot of writing is romance, or love-relationship, orientated

My Non-Romance Work

i do have though, pieces that, being snippets, though “emotionally-satisfying” for me ;-) do not end with an “optimistic ending” – mainly because they are a “moment” in experience, and not what i would consider a “story”

a good example is a poem i am posting to dVersePoets, for their OpenLinkNight prompt series

that will get posted late today when their “pub” opens for open poetry submissions

once i have it posted i’ll place a link to that prompt here -

and a link to my poem here

Story

so it seems that, for me, having a story in my work, enables me to give a fuller view of what i’m trying to express, and that usually has the ending that qualifies the piece as “romantic”

a good example of a recent poem that i think fits then, is “venus in transit across the sun

the strong sense of connection between my wife and i that i try to express about her recent operation, and our anticipated joined effort for her recovery, for me, fits the definition of a romance

it may be that there are other elements some people may consider for a work to be a romance, but for my purposes, i feel comfortable including many of my poems with my fiction in that category, and am equally ok with simply calling them “romantic” ;-)

but more than anything, again for me, my work is simply one person’s representation of life

and that’s something i believe we can all do, we all have stories ;-)

“2 Stories, a Poem, & a Sampler (fiction)”

this little ebook, with the exception of my childhood story, “Witches,” all feature work about relationships, all end with i feel is a satisfying and optimistic ending, even my poem “when it ended”

the ending resolution of finding comfort with another is critical to the work, and i believe, universally optimistic

i am trying to get more outlets to feature it as FREE, but the avenues for placing it at no charge is very limited; as of this writing, on smashwords has accepted it for a free listing, though it is available for 99¢ on amazon

all updates on availability are posted on my Books page listing for this title

i hope you get to have a copy and see what seems to me an interesting journey in fiction and poetry from 1981 to now, thanks so much ;-)

***

Tomorrow

the first chapter (most are very short) of my new novella, “the old american artist, a love story,” is my targeted post for tomorrow ;-)

i hope everyone is gearing up for a great safe fourth of july!

thanks ya’ll ;-)

dVersePoets Prompt – Re-Joycing in Poetics (and Exile) -

hosted by ManicDaily (a/k/a Karin Gustafson)

*

karin, in her prompt at dVersePoets, regarding forms and styles and expressions of “exile” says :

“Exile, like love, transgression, death, is an archetypal storyline.”

then continues with examples religious and literary, from ovid to joyce and even within the hobbit series

the excerpts from ovid and joyce were particularly nice i thought

by go by and check it out, there’s more in her thoughts on the subject

my own take, based on my recent engrossment in my wife’s knee replacement, is both easier, and harder, to use as my prompt response, than conjuring up distant memories i thought i’d exiled and am maybe not ready to contemplate their return yet ;-)

which is a round-about-way of saying i’m too deep in what i’m in to do more than my current subject, helping my wife to her new bionic self ;-)

happy father’s day!

and if you’re in exile, remember, the prodigal son (or daughter) always got the most press, uh, attention ;-)

dVersepoets Prompt – Translucent Poetics: Writing Spoken Words

hosted by claudia schoenfeld and ami mattison

ami, a spoken word poet artist, describes how spoken word poetry differs from traditionally expected written poetry :

excerpt,

“Spoken word is intended for a listening audience. Thus, it must somehow manage to speak itself in a way that makes its various images and metaphors easily apparent, or accessible, to any listener and not necessarily to someone “schooled” in poetry or even spoken word…

“translucency, or poetic transparency is a key element of spoken word poetry….”

ami goes on to of course acknowledge similarities, but then progresses to describe the use of first person narrative to achieve success, ie, communication, with a live audience

as a person who has done a touch of community theatre, and a few years of summer outdoor amphitheater work in galveston, i can relate to how much it must mean to ami to do this type of poetry

maybe one day i’ll merge that old interest of mine with this old interest of mine ;-)

“Poems for Lovers Loving & Being Loved”

*

Cover for "Poems for Lovers Loving & Being Loved" by Felipe Adan LermaIntro

below are several places with additional information about “poems for lovers loving & being loved” – including in-depth information, press release, and samples

featured by the indie spotlight recently, this in an in-depth question/answer format in regard to not only the contents of this ebook, but also it’s making and purpose

two sample poems are included in this feature, “heart beats” and “my evil twin” – the latter being one of my more favorite humorous poems (for friendship) from the 90s

the former, “heart beats,” is also featured as one of my earliest posts, for valentine’s day last year! close to when i started yoga-adan ;-)

*

More Samples, On Yoga-Adan

other samples from this large collection of love poems, for lovers and friends and family, are on my site, including “wild music” and “i heard you sing” – both new

undercurrents,” which was written just a few weeks ago, isn’t in the ebook collection; it’s written in response to a prompt from dversepoets, a poet site, and involves kitty cats, but is still a love poem you might enjoy ;-)

another category of love in “poems for lovers loving & being loved” is for occasions, and “a wedding blessing,” also published early in the beginnings of yoga-adan, is included

*

Press Release

a recent press release for “poems for lovers loving & being loved” is also available

separately, “12 stages of loving” has also been released, as a sense of how we are all lovers, at all ages of our lives, examined in a small separate ebook of prose-poetry

*

Related

and related by intent, is my small ebook series, “Everyday Gratitude” – my most downloaded series to-date, with Vol 2, releasing free for five days, beginning wednesday february 15th

these are all perfect small gifts for valentines, and any time one is thinking of how love is in our lives
*

New Sample

below, i’ve posted “grandma” as an example of “other loves” in this extended ebook, “poems for lovers loving & being loved” about love

this will be this poem’s first appearance on yoga-adan

*

 Grandma

Grandmas go way back.

So far I can hardly see

my own shadow.

I’d like to think she lived

in a real deep cool green forest,

probably was friends with

all the animals I’d seen

in the movies as I’d grown up.

Maybe she lived on a high mountain

where the snows always melted

right on time with the first flowers.

She just had a kinda magic,

a sweet magic about her.

And it seems her eyes were always

twinkling, amused by me, saying, yes,

yes I could do that little project

that little idea.  That yes, I can

do it, and it would come out

alright…and that,

that’s my grandma.

Summary

all in all, over six dozen poems are included in “poems for lovers loving & being loved”

it is available through amazon books, barnes & noble, google books, and smashwords

though these poems are targeted for valentine’s day, they are also an excellent gift for mother’s day, birthdays, and christmas

i hope you enjoy them, and let your friends know about them too ;-)

sincerely,

adan

***

Yoga

i think my ending “yoga” segment in my writings is now replacing my previous featured “final thoughts” section

yoga is about oneness and awareness of the various ways we experience that oneness

oneness is said to be infinite, and i believe the nuances we each bring to our lives and to those around us, is, by definition, also infinite

thus love, in its reach, it variety of expression, and its enduringness, is equally infinite

i have to add, that these are my beliefs, i don’t know them to be true beyond a shadow of a doubt, or in a scientifically proven way, but are what i sincerely believe at this time…

actually probably have believed, for a very long time ;-)

The Prompt, “Undercurrents,” from dVersepoets

prompt introduced by karin gustafson

“For today’s prompt, I urge you to consider the different layers (or faces) of an experience, moment, relationship, person, object.  You may wish to very directly write about these differing layers, or just to allow them to form your words from underneath.”

the intro is a fascinating descriptive account, including an excerpt from a work by Rainer Maria Rilke, of the forms and ideas of “undercurrents”

i highly recommend it

*

that said, i’m not sure what “undercurrents” really-exactly-to-me means

i have an idea, i think i often allude to its use within even my shorter pieces, like my morning series of “awakening” poems, but i’m not sure, exactly…

so, below, is my shot at it ;-)

***

Undercurrents

kitty cats, are like people, so much

i told her, smiling, then looking away

they paw the ground pretending to be looking

at something, they seem captivated, by…something

i add, glancing at the edges of a limb of leaves near by

finding a lone flutter-leaf reflecting varying rays of light

my boy kitty, i told her, kept stepping closer to your girl kitty

i whispered, trailing away my voice, seeking a shadow to focus on,

by sniffing the worn wooden steps leading up to where she sat

watching him, i explained, shifting to sit beside her now,

when he got to where she sat, on the warm step set in sun, he

paused, sniffed the air, and sat beside her – can you believe that

i asked

he sure took his time, she said, smiling, then looking up toward a new

cloud

Yoga

undercurrents exist everywhere, i believe

it’s what we’re always telling ourselves, in yoga, that we’re looking for

but i’m beginning to also believe, we’re what we’re looking for, and we’re the undercurrent, hidden from ourselves

certainly it seems our pets already seem to know these things about us ;-)

yoga is the process of becoming more aware, of what we’re already often aware of, and didn’t know it

like one of those paintings with images embedded in it, and we don’t know it, til someone says they’re there…

Intro

“i heard you sing” is an original love poem i just wrote today finishing my selections for my next ebook, “Lovers Loving & Being Loved,” due out in a week or so

happily i also received an email from the poetry site dVersepoets, which provides different prompts poets are welcome to, respond and post a link to, on their site

typically, that sort of stuff doesn’t appeal to me, but the initiating essays for each prompt, written by different contributing working poets, are consistently unusually well writ, informative, and sometimes downright entertaining ;-)

so i’m willing to “try” and contribute…

*

The Prompt

in this case, the title of the essay is “Form For All – Ballads, Carols, and Lullabyes”

my cue, from the article, for the ok for my own poem, i’ve decided ;-) is :

“Some Carols such as Joseph Was An Old Man were definitely popular belonging to the culture of the ‘folk’; while later ones such as Charles Wesley’s Hark the Herald Angels Sing are the product of more sophisticated literary efforts…”

*

Yoga

mine is probably closer to the culture of the folk, though my sentiment is definitely tied to a sense of finding deeper meaning

despite some schools of yoga off-putting human experience, i tend more to the idea that if all is really one, then our experiences here, have value elsewhere, and will be carried forward, however that might be

and yoga’s true gift to me, awareness, is what’s helped clarify that general perception i’ve had, for much of a long time

i hope you enjoy the poem ;-)

I Heard You Sing

and

i found myself

needing a breath

more air

more clarity

more you

*

waves of feelings

from your words

formed

with so much

music

music of you

*

carrying me

home

where home

is

scented and warm

my heart cooking

baking

with you

*

i heard you sing

my eyes to tears

my smiles to miles

yes

i hear you sing

Wild Music

it’s not

just

flailing arms

and out-screeched

screams

but

tiny seams

split to rosy glows

that draw our

eye

then our breath

then our heavings

and our

movings

our

heart reaching

out to our mind saying

well!  well!

are we

or

aren’t we!

and

the shaking joining

shudders shakes the shutters

a new world is opened

the breathing eases

but the rosy glow

has left its

mark

you’re in love

today’s post is in response to a different prompt, issued weekly or so i think, from a poetry site called dVersepoets.com

this week’s prompt, “wild!” from mark kerstetter, one of a group running the site, was led off by one of the better essays i’ve read about art and wildness and our abilities to  live, or not live, a more civilized life -

references are made to various artists and contemporary happenings and tied to a question we also often see in yoga, what to do with the wild inside us, in a way to help us evolve as better people

mark himself spoke a little about his own experiences so far -

“My heart was a vast, wild, pathless place where I could wander forever and get lost. If I was to explore my heart, I had to do it with intelligence and discipline…”

*

i also need to give a big thanks for the inspiration from emmanuelle of plans on a comet, who wrote a nice piece for her music-regular, music matters, at the magazine of yoga

her piece also has me working up a post, which initially i was gonna put up this week, but is, as usual, taking me longer than i’d expected ;-)

actually her piece on the immediacy of music and dance and song in our lives, ties in with dverse’s “wild” prompt, in the sense that it speaks to how to access that wilder portion of ourselves, while dverse address the what if we don’t acknowledge it

interesting – two pieces of the puzzle we are ;-)

***

Final Thoughts

in integrating yoga fitness and the arts, for me, i seem to have swung heavily (back) into the arts, and left the physicalities behind ;-)

but that’s been a life pattern for me, so i’m not worried

experience tells me things will swing back -

and the past year also shows me :

i’ll be bringing more of what i touch, from all my interests, deeper into my eternal (its seems) swing into balance

balance, as i wrote about recently, seems to be a process, rather than a stopping point ;-)

this was an important time for me, half a life ago

and this is my oldest recorded poem i have, published in the university of houston clear lakes’s student publication, the bayousphere in 1982

**

When it Ended

Atlanta

late in the morning,

stopping by the road,

morning air sticking to my face

*

I sucked blood from my knuckles

torn

switching the old tire

*

as i looked back to Atlanta

its rivers of towers

with two or three lights

still peeping

over the slant of the hills.

*

Coasted the Gulf

to Louisiana.

White ribbons of hot concrete

leading me

over the green stump swamps

to Orange

where i bridged the mud

of the Sabine.

*

Saw

a hundred steel steeples spitting

balls of white fire

into the night sky,

*

down to the Valley

where the trees                        disappeared

*

then reappeared

all the limbs

and trunks

shrunken over resting

old folks

darkened wrinkled and dying —

*

Crossed the wet borders.

Theirs.     Ours.

Yours.

*

The flat hot roofs and white streaked sky

slanting

to

the desert —

*

Found, on the red sands,

a town with a woman.

*

She rocked me slowly

and

sang me songs

telling me tales,

floating me in her

tiny brown waves

of singing wet flesh

leaving

me

shivering

til

i

floated,

til

i

sang

(hoarsely)

all my tales

of my leavings,

my promise

to you.

the only time i’ve lived outside texas, before our current planned move to vermont, was when i was in the air force, stationed in northwest florida

sometimes i’d do the 12 hour drive home to houston with the kids etc, and sometimes by myself, usually in one drive – now it’d probably take me two days!

the poem then, is a kinda compilation of remembered images, a detour through atlanta to play tourist, tire changes, plus mixes of feelings covering several years from the mid 70′s to 1980 or so

that was a time of endings and new beginnings 30 years ago

i remember feeling a kernel of hopefulness when i wrote this poem

reading this again the last few weeks, i sense that hopefulness even stronger

maybe cause another new beginning is beginning…

*

through-out the month of may, as sheila and i prepare for our texas-to-vermont change-over, i’ll be posting images of painting and photos, plus more poems

maybe not every day, but at least several times a week

with an occasional usual yoga-fitness post ;-)

Heart Beats by the Lake

Heart Beats by the Lake

my poem below, “heart beats,” was a turning point of sorts

though, as usual, i not only didn’t realize it, but wasn’t even vaguely attuned to any kind of turning point  ;-)

in my meditation posts (part 1 starts tomorrow) i’ll refer back to “heart beats” as i make sense of what it is that turned…

today though, is my wife sheila’s birthday -

happy birthday!!!

unlike my poem-post on friday, “cross country,” with its union of self to a larger “oneness,” “heart beats” is a meditation by one soul linked to another…

and though i believe each of us must find our own way, i don’t believe our purpose here on earth, is simply to find our lone way back to our source, whatever it may finally reveal itself to be…

i’ve never accepted the viewpoint that our goal is to reach nirvana, or samadhi, or heaven, or any other idealized potentiality, just merely to reach it, to rejoin a lost status, or recover a prior state of being

at what point, in this projected recovery of oneness, would that soul consider that there are other souls that also need teaching or companionship?

at what point would this risen soul feel the universal impulse within their heart, and want to help out? or be a part of that effort?

the fun part, at least  ;-)  is, we seem destined with this incredible freedom to choose how we’d contribute

i mean, have we ever really ever thought, when we fell in love, it was “merely” physical?

***

Heart Beats

When you smile

or grin

your lips stretching

in a way that pulls at me…

When you speak

softly

to me calming my day

into our night…

When you move

carefree

easily – softly upon the earth…

When we spend

our time together

gathering memories

like the butterfly and bee

harvesting

all that’s good

between us…

That’s when my heart beats.

Sheila, Land Water & Sky

Artist’s Comment: one of my earliest and one of my enduring best poems

widely and wonderfully accepted; one of those rare writing treats, equally as satisfying and mystifying as a painting done in fresh single swipes, written as it flowed off my pen; the words and ink were almost one

is “heart beats” a meditation? was the experience of creating it a meditation?
