dVersePoets OpenLinkNight, # 95, Hosted by Tony Maude

I’ve linked my new poem to a great poets site, dVersePoets.

*

One of my smaller poems, yet chock full of meaning for me.

In the linked to poem below, “Little Dancer,” I think I was touching on the same meaning, but hadn’t realized it when I wrote it, nearly two decades ago.

Then, almost two years ago, I posted it on this site, with commentary that I was beginning to see more in the poem than when I wrote it.

It is often said we learn from our creative efforts, as much if not more, than those who welcome our work.  I don’t know how true that is, but in regards to myself, my own benefitting, it is very much true.

I hope you’ll take a look at this very sweet short poem below also, and see if you feel some of the same things I began to notice them, and try to imply in the short lines for “Love is Blind(ing).”

Thanks so much ;-)

“Horloge du Musée d’Orsay”

The Day I Wed My Kids’ Step-Mom

Down the seawall in Galveston

down Broadway Boulevard’s hundred year old oaks

before Ike torn them down -

down to the courthouse

with our three kids

- in tow -

two

were mine and your little one.

But they were all, so little, then, weren’t they…

even

if

with their own children now.

And we heard “Going to the

Chapel”

playing in our Chevy Chevette

grins spreading stars ‘cross our eyes as we sang it.

The soft Galveston air

warm

but not yet hot.

The parking was easy then too.

And we’d jumped into doing it, it seemed -

marrying, even

if nearly a year and a half after we’d first pretended not to

have noticed each other.

Well

there’s no denying it now.

I married you then, and I’d marry you now.

And maybe remember, again, it wasn’t just the words in the song -

it was the music in the car and our children in the back seat

and the wind in the windows and all the wishes

we’ve worked to make true.

Happy Anniversary

Sheila

dVersePoets OpenLinkNight, # 94, Hosted by Grace

I’ve linked my new poem to a great site for poets, dVersePoets.

OpenLinkNight provides an open prompt once a week for poets to post on any subject.  A few suggestions, with an example in their posting, are spring, or a poem for National Poetry Month (April).

For spring, I do have an springtime Austin Texas photopoem with images of the Hike & Bike Trail.

But this poem, if you’ve had a chance to read it, is an anniversary poem to my wife, Sheila. ;-)

*

May 1st – Happy 32nd Anniversary to Sheila ;-)

Below are some nice memories of past posts where I could feature you, or you inspired me.

Muchas gracias, it’s been a journey that’s filled (over-flowed? ;-) ) my life.

Spring Time Along the Lake

We walked down the slope to the Hike & Bike.

Another weekend, another concert along

the shore before the heat arrives.

People outnumber the cars

but the cars can’t

move.

It’s a good time

to be walking, rowing

sitting on benches by the shoreline.

There’s only small windows of

time

to see the better side

of Austin

but

the view is mighty

fine

when the glass

has just been cleaned.

I’m not gonna have much commentary this time around.  Just a quick thanks to Claudia for the spring time prompt at dVersePoets.

I hesitated uploading this last image because of someone’s thoughtlessness of letting that bag of trash blow over onto an otherwise beautiful series of images along Austin’s Lady Bird Lake and Hike & Bike area.

It pitiful that people allow themselves to be so uncaring, and yet, thank goodness, it was the only instance of litter among all the clean-landscape images I took this afternoon.

At least that stood out. ;-)

There’s a lot of crummy people out there, but there’s a lot more that aren’t…

Future Posts

The third post in my Aging Gracefully into 62 series should be ready next week. ;-)

And after that, back to my Paris Photo series – yay! ;-)

Birds in the Bath

Winter rains

Spring rains

Rains in Paris and in Austin

The same rains wet with earth made

to moisture.

The birds don’t care.

The water is the same, all good to them.

It doesn’t matter the season or the place.

And the people passing smiling by them

in Paris and in Austin

are like them.

They don’t care either.

The birds are all the same, all good to them.

Rinsing off the muddy differences

mad men try to make

on our Earth.

Birds in Austin by Palmer Auditorium

Birds in Austin by Palmer Auditorium

Image

I very recently, in my Paris Photo series, posted some images of birds bathing in a puddle by the Eiffel Tower, and kept thinking and feeling the similarity to birds just about everywhere I’ve been blessed to go on this Earth.

And though not that many places, enough to feel that particular connection.

Then I remembered I had taken some pictures of birds bathing just a few weeks earlier here in Austin, and couldn’t resist posting a poem for it, and showing the photos.

This was taken just a walk down from our apartment, in a green area between Palmer Events Center and Lady Bird Lake.  Palmer is a reconstructed use of an old auditorium where Sheila and I did almost all our Austin art and craft shows when we were personalizing and selling our poetry to the public back in the 90s.

If you get a chance take a look at the Paris birds bathing by the Eiffel Tower.

If Mom’s Were…

Original Poetry by Felipe Adan Lerma

**

Category : Family Poems

**

If Mom’s Were…

If moms were rainbows

you would always be the

first and last colors shining.

If moms were angels

you’d be my highest guardian.

If moms were roses

you’d open cheerfully at daybreak

and guide me from the thorns of life.

If moms were dreams

you’d be my deepest sleep.

If moms were stars

you’d be my guiding light.

And if moms were money

you’d never be spent foolishly

but forever saved wisely in my heart.

dVersePoets OpenLinkNight, Mother’s Day, and “If Mom’s Were…”

dVersePoets

one of the advantages of posting to dVersePoets OpenLinkNight, and participating in their open call prompt for poetry, is being able to merge something i want to post, with a poem i need to post, and be part of the camaraderie with a great group of original and “very” diverse yet talented poets -

do check out their link below ;-) joseph hesch, tonight’s host, has some witty description of tending the poetry bar ;-) and ties it to one of his favorite emily dickinson poems

*

Mother’s Day

the biggest celebration after Christmas is fast approaching, and i’ve a few poems i’ve posted over the years i wanted to add to

recently i posted a new poem, “aging gracefully into mother’s day“, which is part of my family poems in general on my site (includes dad, babies, all those good relationships we’ve hopefully be able to enjoy)

the family poems series does include quite a few other mother’s day poems, including poems like “step mom” and “my mom is an angel

*

“If Mom’s Were…”

written almost twenty years ago now, amazing!

this is one of my older favorite family poems, where i created a self prompt, before i knew there was such a thing as “a” prompt ;-)

i did many many poems in this style, saying what an idea or person “was” if they were something else

my wife sheila and i sold these little poems in art and mall shows all through the 90s, personalizing them on the spot, printing them out, and matting and backing them with mats and foam core i cut myself at home

all i asked of myself was to find an image that felt right to me emotionally, and see if i could phrase it in a nice way

i think that is part of what i like about dVersePoets, especially their open link night feature which circles round each week, a poet or artist can create what is dearest to his or her heart right then, in the style that suits, in the words that mean the most

mother’s day is just a month away now, and though it really exists all year round ;-) watching and celebrating its approach might mean a little more, especially to the mom ;-)

best wishes everyone!

“Distant Goals”

i spied the tiny bird high atop a twig branch pregnant with april buds in february

second hand

my wife had to finger-point it to me several times

before I differentiated it from the same-brown colors of left-over leaves from fall

though, i need to add, i could hear its insistent chirp-call, like a favorite song on a jukebox

played too loud

for the speakers, or listeners

i guess, seeing the plump brown buds all around itself, it too, like me, sensed that spring and leaves, and other birds, would soon be thick among fresh light green leaves with textures so fragile a wind might tear them

at least now i know why I sometimes sound like the speakers inside my head are

also

too loud

the once distant goal of a new spring in my life

is very near

Getting Back to Healthy – Yes, It’s a Process ;-)

speaking of work in progress, last posting, i said this below :

going from teaching 2 to 5 fitness classes per week, through to the end of oct last year, then traveling to stowe, paris, houston, and back here in austin, even with doing daily walks, and intermittent chair based exercise sets, plus getting sick! has left sheila and myself at a point where, resuming a more daily chair based routine, and including weights, elastic bands, etc, has been a reminder how much the body needs to be worked to stay in fluid enjoyable order ;-)

my next post, barring the usual unknowns, is to do a fitness review -

as much for sheila and myself as anyone interested ;-)

stay healthy and happy everyone!

adan

well, i haven’t given up, and am taking my time with it, as it is an important post for, with pics showing how i had deteriorated due to illness and lack of physical activity i had been used to for, well, decades

the good news, as i have said in classes for ages, ie, the few years i’ve taught classes ;-) , the path back to fitness, once one has regained or stayed fit, is much much quicker than the initial work

memory, both body and mental memory play huge parts in that, but i think, when those body and mental memories are keyed, the emotional memories of being more fit, doing movement that is enjoyable and healthy, is even more powerful

so, hopefully, again, soon ;-) i’ll have my new fitness post, my first in a very long time

this time with the extra layer of experience of falling out of fitness, ever so slowly , over several months, and (beginning) to come back

stay well everyone, take care!

adan

dVerse Poets Meeting the Bar Prompt : Exploring Second Person

hosted by : Victoria C. Slotto

i saw the prompt was for second person usage at dverse and thought, no idea what to do for that, then had this idea, hey, talking to oneself is a sort-of second person, so why not try that ;-)

additionally, i wanted to use these three images of my wife sheila and claudia, who had come to paris on business for the day -

fortunately she had a couple hours we were able to meet with her with, and these are from a nearby church, just across from notre dame, st severin (i’ve placed a link below)

hand-holding a small compact and shooting without flash (restricted inside most churches & museums) is tricky enough for me, which i often somewhat solve using a two-second timer release, but -

this created blur motion of the two of them walking and chatting quietly in the chapel

turned out perfect ;-) and inspired the idea of motion in stillness

special thanks to victoria, hosting dverse, for the unexpectedly timely prompt ;-)

OK, Maybe the Last PhotoPoem in Vermont? ;-)

yes, i said my previous vermont photopoem was my last, but that was before our trip away from my wife’s home state got derailed / delayed for a week

obviously we are extremely fortunate to have a place to stay that is not only comfortable, but beautiful

stowe, by texas standards, is down the road from burlington, and was worth a look for a place to stay that, price-wise, easily rivaled staying in burlington

that the stowe area is what is considered “off-season” right now, i hadn’t anticipated, but gladly welcome ;-)

judging by the images i’m coming across, i’d say, barring the unknown, i’ll have some more vermont photopoems before our scheduled flight out next week

our stay at the sun & ski inn has been a treat so far, and we’re hopeful for a full stay of the same ;-)

stayed tuned, and hope you’ll catch the next photopoem!

*

Dining in Stowe

well, maybe not “dining” but definitely lunch ;-)

today we experimented at Frida’s Taqueria and Grill, and tasted one of the rare mexican food fares we’ve found here in vermont

tasty, in a setting that’s clean, colorful, and fun, the food is worthwhile and affordable

throw in that “off-season” factor, and getting a nice size table by a wide clear window, was easy and enjoyable, all completed by eager smiling service

we shared three different types of fish tacos, a huge serving of guacamole in a container of genuine volcano rock, a couple of other sides, and we were pleasantly full at an extremely reasonable price -

plus i got my one and only t-shirt (finally) during my nearly one and a half year stay with sheila here in vermont!

and snow showers tonight? we’ll see ;-)

New Page Across the Waters

it’s just a cell

storm

across lake champlain

contrasting the sunshine in a blink

yet it feels like

a page turning across my sight

the shadow of the passing page swiping a

cinema-transition to the next scene

i can even see the tiny sandbar

pretending to be a

continent

and why not?

in a day’s blink

my wife and i will blink across a

larger water

make

our own contrasting shadow

and land in Paris

remembering

every sandbar is a continent

when you breathe there

Last PhotoPoem in Vermont

but not the last poem or photopoem about vermont

we’re just moving, that’s all ;-)

my wife and i went from austin to galveston for a bit to be near family in houston, then on to here, in vermont, for the same reason

now, with a scheduled detour in paris, we’ll be returning to austin texas, by mid december

i’d prefer to yak a bit more, say a bit more, explain a bit more, but i’m typing this as my tether to the cable internet is about to be shut off

then i’ll need to find a wifi place to finish this by linking to dversepoets

definitely another page turning, i think it’ll be fun seeing what paris will be like this time of year; i’ve read the lights for the holidays are really special – i’ll let you know ;-)

*

Hurricane Sandy’s Effect, Minor – One Week Delay Going to Paris!

got calls just this evening that due to heavy damage at nyc airports, all legs of our flights cancelled, am re-scheduling, but earliest avail for both of us at same price etc is one week out

as i say in my poem, in a day’s blink ;-)

and if “every sandbar is a continent / when you breathe there” – then every twist & turn delay is another adventure in the day’s many blinks ;-)

now my wife and i have a whole ‘nother view of a feature done in the media here, called “stuck in vermont”

*

Hurricane Sandy’s Effect, Major – No Power, Cold Temps, Contaminated Water

beyond all the above, are our prayers for the folks and families suffering and coping with sudden devastation and uncertainty

because, having living most my life along the texas gulf coast, despite the welcome aid of all our fellow neighbors, when one suddenly returns to living day-to-day, moment to moment, without safe water, food, or shelter, the reminder-blink of our very human vulnerability and dependence on each other, is truly shocking in its long-range impact -

and is something i’ve become more and more grateful for having learned -

natasha, below, from dVersePoets, says it well…

**

“It’s the Season of the Witch and those of us along the eastern seaboard have named her Sandy.  Here, we’ll feel her steam through the overnight, but for those of you out there dealing with her full frontal assault, please know our thoughts and prayers are with you.”

“perhaps we can take some comfort in knowing our virtual pub has proven  quite strong against the elements and the mood, as always, is welcoming and warm…”

take a look, if you can, at their fine site, but stay and be safe with loved ones and family

Commentary

Technicals

some exposure adjustment, the tiniest touch of saturation, and that’s it -

no cropping, sharpening, or tilting

just a lucky beauty of a shot ;-)

Leddy Park

by texas standards, leddy park here in burlington vermont is almost walking distance from our apartment, and certainly a close-by drive to get to

admission season is over, so anyone can drive on in to the huge almost hidden parking area -

an enclosed ice skating arena sits between the parking lot and lake champlain and views of the adirondacks

my wife grew up nearby there, and it’s a treat hearing her talk about trips she took there with her dad as a child

Choosing a Title

i hesitated titling this image poem “nature’s cathedral” but it fit so well, i just couldn’t not name it so

the canopy of shade and light is like stain glass i think, with some romanesque arches at the top of the frame – the image of this spot being a cathedral, nature’s cathedral, was immediate

sometimes, giving in to one’s first impulse is far and beyond the right thing to do ;-)

Commentary

Technicals

a tiny tilt counter clock wise of the total frame – it seemed to set the path in an energy angle that felt more hopeful

a few percentage points of added saturation – a dab, like a pinch of ginger; the mix was already so rich

touches with the dodge tool – enough to open my eyes just a touch wider on the light reflection crossing the road, added same along the further side of the road reaching back toward the viewer

that’s it ;-) not much, just enough i think ;-)

Thompson Park

part of Thompson Park, which is part of the Stowe Recreation Path, this view is just a fraction of the whole trail, which meanders by a brook, goes underneath the road between the city of Stowe and the sky resorts, and wanders back toward the town

the path itself is used by both bicyclists and walkers

Autumn Leaves in Vermont

storms had passed through the days before, and the stillness of the leaves seem frozen where the winds left off

for a texas boy like myself, this was an incredible visual and textural treat

the variety of foliage, when everything is green, is gorgeous, yet more muted, with the layers within one’s visual distance almost flattened

it seems, for me, that in fall colors, because each bush and tree and shrub and layer is in its own process from green through yellows reds and russets, i can more easily, and more pleasurably, different the vegetation

from where i stood, to where i could see, seemed more delineated, and space gained in a nuanced depth

it’s a beauty, that’s for sure ;-)

happy fall weather ya’ll ;-)

a beauty of an unexpected view, walking along leddy park with sheila, one of the first times she could finally go and walk outside the house besides the front walk

we crept up to the opening, like we were the ones invading someone’s space ;-)

and right away i had the thought then, how much of what i felt, was what the first native inhabitants’ sensed, seeing strange water craft floating by so deliberately…

just a spot, one spot, with that vantage look -

the limbs’ll grow different another year another season, and that whole moment will have also changed, amazing…

two moments in one, a sameness from the past, with a uniqueness only in the present….

**

dVersePoets

submitted to dVersePoets prompt : OpenLinkNight – Week 61 (9/11)

hosted by brian miller, one of the two co-founders, with personal commentary about his day on 9/11

excerpt,

“take just a moment to remember—a moment of silence if you will for all the lives lost, all the heroes, not only that day but everyday around our world”

brian’s own poetry submission, on his site, he partially describes his work thus :

“I don’t know what happened to the guy in the poem above—its a true incident that happened back during our recovery from the derecho. Life changes in a moment….”

though neither brian’s nor my poem were written in regard to 9/11, it is good to remember the many way our lives can change so quickly

and 9/11, in new york city that fateful day, will always be one of the most profound to have affected so many of us…so instantly…

it’s when we forget these moments, that, i believe, it is worst….

**

new blog series, for now ;-)

i’ve decided a way to get more blog posts, poetry, and commentary up onto my site, was to combine some of these goals

a photopoem series on vermont imagery does that, plus enables me to start posting some photos too

for the foreseeable future, and how far ahead is that? ;-) i’ll be posting vermont imagery

hope ya’ll enjoy the series of pictures with verse, thanks so much ;-)

Accelerating Into the Curve

**

dVerse Poets Pub Prompt : Meeting the Bar: Impressionistic Writing -

hosted by Claudia Schoenfeld

*

claudia, traveling about europe (where she lives) happened on an impressionist exhibit and was inspired for the “meeting the bar” prompt featured this week

besides the absolutely stunning monet featured at the top of the page, which i believe i saw once, or a variation of it, in a converted museum-house in paris, she wrote this, which is thought was perfectly on :

But details weren’t their focus anyway, it was the mood of a moment, a feeling, fleeting, moving. Monet once said “For me a landscape does not exist in itself, it changes every moment in appearance, but the surrounding atmosphere brings it to life.”

it hard enough doing approximate justice visually to the impressionist legacy, much less verbally with words, but to feel inspired to do one’s own “take” on our own personal moments, here and now in our own unique times, is justification enough i believe ;-)

if you can, stop by and see the full prompt, and even more enticing, the myriad poetic responses one can enjoy, as a reader a writer a painter a lover and simply curious ;-)

best wishes everyone!

she offers some interesting information on, (she guesses) her fourth or fifth reading of “lord of the rings” – i found it very interesting!

and ends with this take from her readings,

“In the end, that’s why we’re drawn to write, I think, to chronicle, in our own ways, the adventures and tales of our lives and worlds that matter, so they won’t be forgotten, and like the characters in them, it really isn’t something we choose–it’s just the job we know we must do, and we can’t turn back if we want to do it right.”

Monet’s Garden in Giverny

**

dVerse Poets Pub : Open Link Night, One Year Anniversary Week

*

i have been fortunate to have found and been able to participate in several communities of artists, in austin via Austin Visual Arts Association and Creative Arts Society, in galveston via Galveston Arts League, and online, via dVersePoets

AVAA has been while, while GAL dates way back, and the latter, dVersePoets is almost still a baby, though past crawling and getting into some pretty good bursts of runs ;-)

this week marks the one year anniversary of the latter, co-founded by brian miller and claudia schoenfeld

brian is a dad and husband and is based here in the u.s., while claude is a mom and a wife and based in europe -

an interesting engaging combo ;-)

they have a full week of goodies planned, take a look, see if you’d like to participate or just enjoy seeing what this varied and talented group of poets and writers has to offer

my own contribution today, to one of their rotating prompts, like a poem i wrote recently, celebrating bastille day (and who of us can resist celebrating freedom ;-) ) is sparked by the creative air of france

like the earlier poem focussing on paris, these are based on some wonderful enduring memories from a trip my wife and i took over a decade ago

monet’s garden in giverny, it seems, is like a shrine to artists -

a lifetime dedicated to finding truth and beauty -

and creating it….

i hope you enjoy ;-)

**

Monet’s Garden in Giverny

i

can’t say it was

not what i expected

and

i can’t say

it was

the light april rain

though

was a relief

from the texas heat

we’d left behind

the grounds laid out

to bloom maximum florals

best for each month

and even each part

of a month

yes

impressive -

and

the pond with the japanese

bridge

oh yes ;-)

almost told me

what this french artist

had found he could express

from his heart -

but

converted

into things for tourists

were

his workshop and home

with vanished eyes

still glancing

at people

who

 visited -

me

my wife

and a few dozen others

and it felt like

some of those whispering looks

noticed

who was noticing them

and nodded

- to me -

oui monsieur oui

but

i heard them in pictures

so i asked them in same, saying

the gardens bloom out in layers with rows

criss-crossed by paths

and

the pond is ringed by flourishes

of

assorted arrangements

of

leaves feathered spikey all interwoven

colors and textures

all seen

from the room to room walls of windows peering

like eyeglasses cataracts removed

on the garden

and pond and seine

just beyond

and

i saw

monet’s garden

stretched as far as my heart wished it to…

oui monsieur oui

from and of the french is all around us!

today’s prompt celebrates exploring what french is for us in our own lives on today, Bastille Day

as ms K puts it,

“the three watchwords of the French revolutionaries celebrated today–Liberté, Fraternité and Egalité (Freedom, Brotherhood/Sisterhood, and Equality).  These are also, to some degree, watchwords here at dVerse….”

this is a fun prompt, with lots of examples of things french, especially poetry, including the sound of french in poetry -

and having visited paris once, just over a decade ago, it nice to feel the memories still move…

i hope you enjoy this small poem, oui? ;-)

so much everyday for her

yet

so many flowers

and

eagerness for color

for us

at

lights on the streets

mirrored

the planters, flowers for

How I Write

**

dVerse Poets Pub : Ars Poetica – Poems about Poetry

hosted by

*

dVersePoets is continuing to celebrate a year of poets getting together and sharing their work in a supportive environment, thanks to co-founders brian miller and claudia schoenfeld

recently i posted a series of writings and samples about my fiction writing, now i have the opportunity to write a small poem about writing poetry!

this “forms” prompt, from gay reiser cannon, is focused on asking what is poetry, beginning by saying :

Most scholars agree that poetry is linked to our most primitive past, and came into existence in an expression of emotions usually accompanied by rhythms (percussion, drums, singing, chanting,) and music. Therefore it enjoys the station of one of man’s oldest and basic arts.

she then presents an interesting look at poetry in term of “content,” “form,” and “effect” and includes a short piece from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

i had written my poem below before reading that portion, but am glad to follow in his invaluable sensed poet’s tradition of  the elements ;-)

it’s amazing the varied range of discussion in the prompts from dVersePoets, i hope you get to go by there and check it out

How I Write Poetry

i’m an air sign that

catches fire

sparklers and bursting

then

doused with rain

sprinkles and gushers

carried,

bleeding pigments,

into the earth

sandy and rocky and fertile

but i

started as air

and

inevitably rise in wisps

from the tendrils of plants

as pollens of oxygen

wrapping myself

forgivingly

into

cyclones and breezes

into

air

once more

it’s how

i

brush myself into

rainbows

even

i

get to wonder and smile about….
